Chapter 57: The Balcony

Rami stared up at the light blue canopy of the four poster bed. He had probably studied the intricate gold patterns embroidered the sky blue silk so intensively that he could most likely have embroidered the exact same pattern himself. Yet he didn't want to move at all.

He felt a cool breeze come from his window. He shivered and pulled the blanket over his bare torso and tried to close his eyes, yet to no avail. He was forever plagued by the iciness of Jurie's honey amber eyes.

He heard the door creak. For a small moment he thought it might be Jurie. But that thought quickly vanished when he saw the face of his elderly grandmother. He sat up as she placed herself slowly at the foot of his bed. She uncovered his previously broken leg and using her wizened healing fingers she started massage them. Her firm grip relaxed his cramping muscles and the phantom pain. Then in sweet flowing Arabic she addressed him.

"Must you always sleep in your underwear Rami?"

Rami grinned. "It's an old habit grandmother. They die hard."

"Rami, I am old now."

"I realised."

"The other Capulet woman and I are the only ones that know of their location and I believe that it must be passed on to you."

"I am ready Grandmother."

"But on one condition!"

"Name it!"

"You must make up with that Capulet girl."

"How did you-"

"Rami I am a woman, I know what she is feeling. Besides I do not want awkwardness in the meeting with her, Saiya and us."

"How would you know? I don't understand it at all."

"She feels used Rami. You fool. You two had some obvious intimacy, and her seeing you galavanting off with that Raihana. She's as proud and as stubborn as you are. Wouldn't you feel used if you were in her position? Damn Son of Donkey."

Ignoring her insults he questioned something he seemed to pick up.

"So you don't approve of my engagement to Raihana?"

"I do not." she answered "Neither do Babbar and Malik. It was always going to be unhealthy and one-sided."

"But you approve of Jurie? Despite her being a Capulet."

"Didn't I say I wanted a bridge? God you're so daft! Saiya is as tired as I am of this God damned fued!"

"Sorry." he said flinching at his grandmother's empassioned shouting.

"Don't apologise to me you dumb donkey. Put on shirt and go make it up with her."

"Wouldn't me going like this sway her mind a little more."

"You're going to apologise, not seduce her. Moron!"

With that she got up, threw his clothes at him and started to walk out the room.

"Wait what if she's asleep?"

"She's not! Now hurry up!"

Rami climbed from his window and jumped down to the palace grounds. He was wearing, black trousers and boots and in his haste his cream coloured shirt hung loosely at his chest. His hair, which had by now grown back was a mess. But hope glittered in his emerald green eyes and so did a certain sadness. He was going share something with her tonight. A little place that he held very close to his heart.

He looked up at the stars again. They burned brightly and he could almost see Zahrah's smile of approval. With that he proceeded.

He had no idea which room she was in. So he decided to take his chance. Using the shadows he crept across quietly so that the guards couldn't see him. Finally he saw her and his heart raced with nervousness. Her long hair flowed in the wind behind her, as dark as night. He white night gown fluttered in the breeze. A soft light glowed behind. She looked exactly like an angel, the answer to all his prayers. But one who had lost her wings. Shakespeare's words came to his mouth.

"But soft! What light through yonder window breaks?
It is the East, and Jurie is the sun!"

She hadn't seen him just yet so he edged closer the balcony.

~~~
A soft scuffling on the ground below her balcony sent Jurie spinning around to face it. Leaning over she spied a familiar mop of dark curls and and a pair of beautiful emerald eyes that stared back up at her.
Her eyes narrowed and she turned back around. Refusing to acknowledge the Arabian Knight and his pretty eyes.
"Jurie!" He called up to her, his voice ringing out into the dark night.
She swung around and lent over. "Quiet you fool!" She whispered-yelled back. "Is it your intention to wake up everyone here?"
Rami looked around guiltily, looking back up to her sheepishly. "No?"
Jurie sighed. "What do you want?" She bit out.
The Arabian Knight breathed out, closing his eyes as if readying himself for a grand speech. "I know I messed up big time and I know you hate me, but please Jurie hear me out. Raihana and I, we have nothing, at least not from my part. I may have felt something for her once upon a time but I realise now that it wasn't love, I loved but a walking shadow. She wasn't Zahrah, she couldn't be Zahrah. I never wanted any of this. I didn't even know I was engaged to her until today. It's killing me. I didn't want this, but our families did. I have to do this...do you understand what its like? Having to put on a smile, to sacrifice all you are for your family and clan, so not to hurt anyone with your selfishness. Of course you do, I can see it. I don't know about you, but you mean something to me. I haven't figured it out yet but...god I sound like a madman, raving like this. But I'm not afraid of death Jurie, I'll gladly lay my life for all I love and believe in. But do you know what I fear the most? I'm afraid of losing you."
Jurie was taken aback. His words undoubtedly touched her heart. It was pounding loudly in her ears. Her breath hitched and the familiar warmth of a blush crept up her neck. She turned around facing the double French doors and took a deep calming breath. When she turned back around her was still gazing back at her, eyes alight with an intense longing.
"Rami." Jurie breathed. "Oh Rami! You know you shouldn't feel this way! Our families! Our names! Do you know how much pain we will experience if they were to ever find out?"
Rami's face became withdrawn, that was certainly not the response he was expecting to hear. He had spilt his heart out to her and she had responded by throwing her fear at him.
He turned, his head hanging.
"But..." Jurie continued. "I'm scared of them. But I'm scared for you more. I'm scared that if my father ever hears a word of those that you spoke tonight he will go and hurt you in a way so unimaginable that even I will not be able to save you from!"
Rami froze. His heart beating furiously.
"I want you to know." Jurie's voice was just above a whisper, she looked away to the ground. "I want you to know that I care about you too! Somehow you have wormed your way into my heart. You don't know how angry I am at you for doing that. I'm angry at myself for letting a fool do that! But I can't find it in myself to regret letting you in! I'm such a mess!" She felt tears prick her eyes. "I fear for you so much yet I can't help but care for you! You are like a double edged sword Rami... you are messing me up mentally and emotionally! I just-"
There was a grunt followed by a thump. The balcony shook gently.
Jurie looked up, her eyes wide. "Rami?" She croaked. "What are you-"
He pressed his lips to hers. Silencing her fears. Jurie whimpered. Rami's lips were soft and firm against hers. Her eyes fluttered closed. And a single traitorous tear trickled down her face. She could taste it's saltiness even against Rami's lips. Gently, she kissed him back, lips meeting with his. He brought a hand behind her nape, drawing her closer, kissing her back fiercely.
Jurie's hands slid up to his chest, clinging tightly onto his shirt. His arm wound around her waist, bringing her impossibly closer.
As they ran out of breath they pulled apart. Resting their foreheads against each other, breathing unevenly.
