Chapter 43: Make Up Artist
The Morning came and Rami felt energised, as if he had actually slept. But funnily enough he hadn't slept a wink. He was smiling broadly when he returned to camp, only to be met by grim faces slinging their muskets over their backs.
He searched for a familiar face. Derek or Jurie or Jasso. He found all three plus Montero and Yuki nuzzling Jurie's leg. They were talking hurriedly with two other Lieutenants about last minute plans. Rami walked up to Derek and put an arm around his shoulder. The two men threw each other a smile before Rami asked:
"What did I miss?"
"Nothing particularly new."
Montero turned to them and gave a winning smile.
"I'm glad you could make it Montague. I had come to think that the nerves had gotten to you."
Rami scowled. Emerald eyes flashing. Sending fear straight into the heart of Montero, like a cold sharp knife. Even Yuki who was by now licking the Arabian Knight's hand flattened her ears in fear.
If fear was all he could command then so be it.
"Unlike you I'm not a coward." Said Rami quietly yet forcefully.
The two men were ready to bash each other's brains in, but Jurie butted in between them.
"You can kill each other all you want later." She stated. "But Giovanni please provide us a summary for Rami's sake. In case he had forgotten."
"Fine," he complied. "Basically Derek will go first taking command of the army. Jurie and Rami will infiltrate and send the three signals. First signal we will attack from the front. Second, from the wings. Third from the back. The assassins may join the fight after the three signals." He looked at the rising orange ribbons of the sun. "Derek, Jurie and Montague...you best leave now."
Rami gave the captain a mock salute before getting astride his horse once again, revelling in the feeling of almost moulding into the horses bare back, his hands fitted in Bucephalus's long mane. Almost as if the horse was made for him.
"Derek would it be the tiger or the horse this time?"
Derek gave him another smile before saying, "I think I'll choose the horse this time around."
With Derek holding on tight to Rami and Jurie on her tiger the three of them set off into lush green rain forest. The morning was cold with a slight drizzle of rain. Something came to Rami's mind as he looked at the young man behind him. Bucephalus came to a screeching halt.
"What's wrong?" Asked Derek. Jurie too stopped and gave Rami a quizzical look.
"Did you bathe this morning?" Rami asked Derek.
Derek gave Rami a completely baffled and uncomfortable look whereas Jurie suppressed a smile.
"Well..err...yes I did." answered Derek.
"Well if we had held you prisoner you wouldn't look so...great."
Jurie muffled a laugh. The two of them acted completely in love without either of them knowing.
"Well...what are you going to do?"
Rami gave devilish smile before saying. "You're going to have to trust me."
~~~~
Quite soon Derek turned from looking like a good looking clear eyed roguish clean cut soldier to a ragged dirty prisoner of war.
"You should be a make up artist." Joked Jurie as she got atop of her tiger. Bucephalus snorted in approval and Yuki gave a rare smile. Derek laughed. Rami scowled.
Being a make up artist was for fops and dandies. He was neither. No he was the Arabian Knight, the Lion of the Desert.
"Calm down Mr. I-am-so-brave-and-strong-and-masculine I was only joking." Said Jurie with a smile.
Rami stood rooted on the spot. Deeply offended. Where did respect go? He was well respected in the Middle East, why not Argentina?
"Well aren't you coming?" Asked Jurie.
He gave her a slight nod and for a moment Jurie wandered whether she had offended him. But she pushed that thought away when he smilingly helped Derek up. Either he got over things quickly, or he was a good actor.
They rode on until they were about a kilometre away from the Unspeakable camp.
All three got off.
Derek started talking "I'll tell them that I escaped. I killed you both and that the Spanish army was unguarded. So while everyone is in a frenzy. You two will send out the three signals."
"Sounds like a plan." Affirmed Jurie.
"Remember to be sweating by the time you get to the camp." Rami reminded Derek. "Stumble as much as possible. We need to make this look legitimate."
Derek nodded and was just about the turn away when Rami pulled him into an embrace and whispered:
"Be careful."
Derek embraced him back gave a smile as he pulled away and saluted Rami exclaiming "Ay Ay Captain!" before he ran off towards the camp.
Rami watched Derek's back disappeared into lush green forests. Once he was gone Rami turned to Jurie with a smile.
"How are we going to do this?" He asked her.
Jurie have him a grin. "Do you know how to climb?"
Rami smiled. Climbing for him was effortless.
"You're talking to the man who ran up the side of a smooth slender pole. Of course I can climb."
~~~~
Jurie shook her head. "Of course." She walked forward to a tree. "Yuki, konaiyo. (Don't come). Rami you best get Bucephalus to hide away, our means of travel from here is going to be by trees."
Rami nodded and released Bucephalus who galloped away into the forest.
"Well now that that's done." Jurie smiled. "Race you up!"
Jurie's small figure meant that she was light, and she was no short of upper body strength either. Climbing trees was cinch. She climbed when she felt the need to escape. Which was. Needless to say. A lot. She swung herself up from branch to branch, with Rami keeping up beside her.
"You didnt possibly think you could win could you Angel?" Rami shouted from his shoulder.
Jurie merely smirked before picking up her pace. Leaping off branches to get to ones that were too far. Reaching out for any small branches that would support her weight. She reached the highest branch, stretching her boy out like a rubber band, for the branch of the next tree.
"We'll see." She called back over her shoulder.
She was nothing short of agile, which was probably why she worked so well with Yuki. Her movements, soundless in woods, compared to the ruckus that Rami made.
"Any louder and the soldiers with hear you." Jurie mumbled.
Well he is taller, and bulkier. But still. He's literally crashing through the trees like an elephant. Sure he's keeping pace but dies he have to do it so loudly?
Jurie reached the last tree that bordered the camp, with Rami not far behind. "We're here." She whispered to him, as he caught up. "This time try to keep as quiet as possible."
She slipped from the tree, landing the ground soundlessly, dashing into the safety of the shadows. Together they crept forward to the main building. Rami shuddered.
"I'm not sure about you Angel. But I would rather not risk my life again on the ladder." He breathed out.
"We're not going in that way." Jurie replied. "Follow me."
Making sure that their were no eyes watching, as all were probably turned to Derek. Jurie ran into the broad vision before slipping into the prison cells. The last she'd been here, she had found, what seemed to be a trapdoor while looking for Rami. Vaguely remembering where it was, she hurried Rami down corridor after corridor until she hit the dead end.
Rami's jaw dropped. He had never seen Jurie get lost before. Now they were at a dead end. If anyone came in they would immediately be able to find out where they were and the two of them would not have a chance to ran or hide.
"Stop panicking Rami. I can feel it in my bones." Jurie bit out. "I know what I'm doing alright." She shot forward pressing on the stone bricks, feeling for movement or a draft. She didn't have much time. Pressing on she hurried along the right wall, then the left.
They couldn't have possibly put it right in front of them could they? It would be too obvious.
Never the less she slid along the wall until she felt a breath of air, and a slight slip of movement. She pushed harder. The brick fell away. As it did four others around it fell, revealing a long dark corridor. A compression structure. That's what they had used to keep the bricks together but once one fell the others would collapse. She was familiar with it. Her father had taught her to watch out for them many many times.
Rami's eye widened as he watched Jurie climb through the hole in the wall. She never ceased to amaze him.
"Hurry up!" She called back to him. "We still have to put these back before we go." Jurie gestured to the bricks.
Rami ducked through, ignoring the sting of of his shoulders scraping against the other bricks.
Dammit. Broad shoulders.
Hurriedly they stacked the bricks back in place, navigating their way through the long corridor before they got to a wooden door.
Padlocked.
"How are we going to get in?" Rami asked Jurie through gritted teeth.
She looked back at him desperately, combing her mind for a way to get through.
What do we do?
