Chapter 19: The Ladder

He knew for now he had to rein in his emotions. He had to break them and tame them. Just like he had done to Bucephalus ten years ago. Sadness, Anger and Regret. The three horses he had to break and tame. Right now he was holding their reins. Right now they had stopped rearing. But Rami didn't know how long that would last. He knew when he returned home these three horses would start rearing and kicking at him again. And he will be broken again. But he will rein them in. And he will break them. Break them properly this time. He couldn't allow them run loose again.

He thundered through the forest. Finally he reached the place where Jurie was. She seemed to sense another presence. Killing the man she was holding by the collar with her Katana she spun around and threw a shuriken at his direction. He ducked away from it in such languid easy motion, that Jurie scowled before her expression changed to that of a shocked one.

She seemed to be about to say something. But Rami shook his head. Not yet. He seemed to say. Later.

He took out the shuriken wedged in the tree behind him and handed it to her. She took them into her hands. But she wrapped her arms around his neck and held him close. Finally he looped his arms around her waist, savoring the feeling of being complete, some how safe and loved. She will be there for him. It was comforting to know.

This was wrong. This wasn't supposed to happen. They were supposed to be killing each other. So why did being in each other's arms feel so right?

In silence they made their way to the colony that the Unspeakable's Army had infiltrated.

"What's the plan?" Asked Rami with as much confidence as he could muster. He was embarrassed and the emotions took a toll on his body.

"Well I'm thinking of kidnapping the commanders of every location. We interrogate them. Then we blackmail the army."

"If the blackmailing fails then?"

"We have the Spanish army at our disposal."

"I must be pretty powerful then." Said Rami giving a small smile, in a small attempt to revert to his usual self.

At least his arrogance is coming back thought Jurie smiling back. She had come to miss it, though she would probably never admit it.

Both Rami and Jurie surveyed the infiltrated colony. Men in pure white suits walked about. There was an air of cold calculating discipline that made both assassins shuddered for a moment at the unfamiliar atmosphere.

"So how are we going to do this?" He asked.

Jurie smiled as she put on her silken Ninja mask over her head.

"We're using the shadows to sneak into the commander's building. Then we wait..."

"What if we screw up during the kidnapping?" Asked Rami, his voice slightly muffled as he started wrapping the mantle around his face. Then he drew his hood over his head.

"Then we wing it." Exclaimed Jurie, a hint of excitement vibrant in her honey-amber eyes.

She watched as Rami stared back at her, wide eyed. "Wing it?" He echoed. "Aren't you always about careful planning and strategy?"

"Yeah well I thought that it was a time to be flexible and it's not like we wont be able to take them down." Jurie shrugged.

"Wow." Rami was clearly mind-blown.

"Eh. Let's go." She jerked her head to the site. "Watch your back, can't have you puncturing yourself another ten million times again can I?"

"Well if that happens then you'll be there to save me." The respond was like a reflex, as it fell out off Rami's mouth. "And I'm sure you love saving my butt."

Jurie shook her head clearing her throat. "Sure sure. You tell yourself that little Arabian Knight. Whatever helps you sleep at night boy."

Rami choked. "Excuse me?! Last time I checked I was taller than you." And just to prove his superior height, he lent his elbow on top of Jurie's small shoulder.

The young Shadow Princess shrugged off his enormously heavy arm and continued on stalking through the long grass. "Stay by my side at all times, we don't want to lose you amongst the tall grass now do we?" She cooed teasingly.

The Arabian Knight scoffed. "If you wanted me to stay with you, all you had to do was ask. I'm so I can make time for you."

Jurie threw him a glare, silencing him as they neared the colony. "Tone down your arrogance we don't want your head to explode now do we?"

Narrowing his eyes, Rami inspected the camp, feeling once again the cold air that it had about it. Drawing Jurie behind him, despite her soft protests, he shielded her from anyone's view.

"I don't need to be protected." She hissed from behind, hitting his back lightly.

But Rami would have none of it. "No." He simply bit out. "Stay behind me."

The two of them watched as the men, clad in pure white suits, busily hustled around the colony. They all seemed to preoccupied to notice the two figures hiding out in the grass. Rami took a brave step forward only to be pulled backwards by Jurie's small hand.

"You don't know where to step in the shadows, to keep yourself concealed. I will go first." She reasoned.

Rami looked away in frustration. "Fine." He grumbled reluctantly.

Hiding a smile Jurie turned to her right and stepped gently, making sure not to step on a twig, or make any sound at all. "Step exactly where I step." She turned to whisper to Rami before continuing on.

It wasn't long, till they reached the back of the colony where a large concrete building loomed over the woods. Casting a sizeable shadow around it. Tiptoeing to the side of the building, Jurie watched as several officials scoured the outside of the building. When they turned their gazes elsewhere Jurie crept forwards, agile as a cat and pressed her back against the side wall, Rami following suit, dashing with huge strides towards the wall, before he too pressed himself against, holding his breath.

Noticing a long rusted ladder on the back wall, Jurie searched for where it ended. "We will climb that ladder, but we will have to do it quickly, because we are in plain view."

Hastily, Jurie reached for the ladder, pulling herself up on it, balancing herself as it wobbled slightly against the wall. "You'll have to climb when I'm halfway to the top. I'm afraid the ladder won't be able to hold both our weights."

Rami nodded, guarding Jurie's back while she climbed, speedily and surely up the rusted ladder that he thought would probably break off if he added his weight to it. Halfway up the ladder, Jurie indicated for Rami to start climbing, before she resumed her hurried pace up the ladder. Every once-in-a-while, Rami would lift his head up to check for any attackers. Looking up, he saw that Jurie had already made it onto the defense platform, and hastened his speed. At the last five rungs, the sound of wind whistled past his ears.

"Hurry up! Your under attack!" Jurie called to him, her face creased with panic.

Stepping up onto the fourth last rung Rami hauled himself upwards onto the second rung. Jurie's expression eased up, and she smiled at him encouragingly. "Come on. Be careful the last rung is very wobbly."

Reaching the last rung Rami gingerly placed his foot onto it before lifting up the rest of his body. Suddenly there was a crack as the last rung snapped into two, and fell downwards to the ground. Rami slipped and found himself clinging dangerously onto the sides of the ladder. He reached for the top of the platform, and released that it was too far. Gulping he looked down. It seemed as if the second last rung was too far from his feet. So there he was, dangling from the sides of a rusted ladder, at least one hundred meters off the ground. If he fell, it was most likely that he would at least break a few bones or worse. Die.

He heard a whimper from above. Jurie had laid on her stomach, with her left hand outstretched for him to take, her eyes glittering with unshed tears. Releasing his right hand from the ladder Rami stretched, grappling for Jurie's hand. Just as Jurie grasped his hand tightly the ladder swung precariously to one side and slid several inches down from its original attached height. Bringing Rami down with it, and dragging Jurie forward, so that only her legs were on the platform while the rest of her torso, dangled perilously over the edge. Jurie bit back a scream as her arm jerked downwards, popping from its socket in her shoulder.

Rami sucked in a breath, as he felt Jurie's arm dislocate. Sweat started to form between their hands and Rami felt his hold slipping. If he held on any longer, he would be worsening Jurie's shoulder. But if he let go he would fall to possibly his death. Again the ladder slipped down, scraping against the side of the wall, leaving white scratches in its wake. Jurie cried out as a wave of pain seared through her shoulder, her left hand was wet with perspiration but she clutched on desperately to Rami's hand through all the agony.

"Don't let go." She gritted out. "Don't let go." Jurie gasped as the pain resurfaced burning her from the inside. Rami nodded but knew neither he or she would be able to hold on much longer. Hopelessness and desperation clung to them, as they frantically hung onto each other.

Abruptly as it had all started his hand slipped through her fingers, into the air, slick with sweat. Tears streamed from her eyes, down to the ground. And she squeezed her eyes shut. "RAMI!!!!!!" She screamed. "RAAAMMIIII!!!"

"NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!"
