Chapter 17: Captain My Ass
Can horses gallop on water? One would think not.
But they say Allah had made such horses from the South Wind. He had said:
"I create thee...To thy forelock, I bind Victory in battle. On thy back, I set a rich spoil and a Treasure in thy loins. I establish thee as one of the Glories of the Earth... I give thee flight without wings."
"I give thee flight without wings." That very sentence echoed through minds of the sailors who caught a glimpse of the Arabian Knight riding on the back of a black horse across the Atlantic ocean. They only saw a glimpse though, for one second he was right in front of you. The next you see his back just a pinpoint on the horizon.
For really Bucephalus's hooves never touched the water. He was as Allah had first envisioned the perfect Arabian horses. Through his blurred vision Rami managed to see the coast of Argentina. He slowed Bucephalus down to a canter as the approached Rio de la Plata, or in English the River of Silver.
He slowed down a little more so that his sight was normal. He saw a large navy blue metal lump emerge from theglistening, pristine, crystal blue water on his right. It was large and seemedto have some sort of weaponry on the sides, and weird wonky telescope at the top. He furrowed his eyebrow in concentration trying to figure out what it was.He couldn't make head or toe of it. Except for the fact that it looked like a traveling vessel.
But what kind of vessel travels underwater? It seemed to be going in the same direction as him. It didn't seem to be causing him any harm. Well other than spooking his horse. In a well worn motion he rubbed the jittery horse's neck. The familiar motion put Bucephalus at ease.
Finally Rami and the strange vessel reached the sandy shores of Rio de la Plata. A curiousness took over the young Arabian. So unwittingly he waited for someone to come out of the strange vessel.
He had to wait a full five minutes before someone came out.
A first he couldn't exactly make it out due to the glare of the sun hitting the incandescent water. But then he saw a small slim female figure that he easily identified as the Princess of Shadows.
"So Angel couldn't stay away from me for long? I knew you found me irresistible." He called out hitching Bucephalus to a tree.
He saw a smile splay across herface as she approached him.
"I could say the same for you Fool."
"Well your side has the more 'advanced' technology. So it's rather obvious that you've been tracking me."
"And why would I do that?"
"Because you love me."
Jurie rolled her eyes. "Fool.Keep dreaming."
"What?! Every girl loves me. It's kind of hard not to."
"Which is why your still a virgin."
The colour red tinged his cheeks."How would you know? Unless you have been tracking me."
Jurie seemed a little uncomfortable,regretting she had even said that. So to avoid embarrassment she decided to let the little banter go and answer truthfully "I've read up on the Islamic religion. Apparently you can't have...you know...before your married."
"See proves my point exactly. I can have any girl I want except I won't because I'm religious."
"Really? You don't really seem like the religious type..."
"That's were your wrong Angel. I am religious. Well I wasn't a few years ago. But you know religion helps.Especially when you've hit rock bottom. Do you believe in anything?"
Jurie briefly wondered what he meant by hitting rock bottom? What had happened? But she decided to respondtruthfully. "I don't believe in anything." then she saw him raise his eyebrowsin disbelief. "I mean I don't believe in Gods or Holy Scriptures. I believe in myself."
He seemed to study her deeply. Not lustfully raking her body. No. He was looking into her eyes with a new intensity. Maybe there was more to him than what meets the eye. Finally he muttered.
"Interesting..." for he had never met a person who believed in nothing but themselves. Then snapped out of his trance and grinned. "You still need to return my clothes."
"Right. Which reminds me...we've been seeing a lot of each other on these missions lately."
"If you're expecting an explanation, I'm sorry. I'm in the dark as much as you are." Then he noticed the arrows on her shoulder. They seemed new, and beautifully crafted. "Can Isee your arrows?" He asked.
She looked at him with mistrustful eyes at first. But slowly she slid the sheath off her shoulders and handed them to him. He had studied the mechanics of arrows for years so as soon as he held each arrow in his hands he knew the purpose which it was bred for.He whistled softly.
"I would kill have arrows like these?" He whispered. It was ironic really since his kill list already exceeded one hundred thousand. Then he quietly handed them back to her.
"You shoot too?" she asked slinging them back on.
"Geez Angel sometimes you can be as unobservant as me." He said grinning gesturing to his own set of bow and arrows. "After all my name does mean the archer."
She nodded then she drew her envelope. It looked exactly like his. She read the letter again. For some reason unknown to him he really wanted to know what was going through her mind at the moment.
"Well hopefully you can live up to your name. Looks like we have a lot of work to do. Any plans?" she asked.
Rami shrugged. "I do live up to my name. But as far as plans go I like winging it. I mean plans often go wrong. You're going to have to wing it anyway."
"Well, I think we should meet the captain first. Then go from there."
Then Rami gestured to the forest."Ladies first."
~~~~~
Jurie's steps were smooth and deliberate, wasting no movement. She felt the eyes of the Arabian Knight watching her every move behind her and immediately felt self conscious. She wouldn't show it of course. Jurie's shoes padded soundlessly on the ground as she made her way to the concrete pathway. Her steps were sure and unwavering,she never stopped to see where she was going, nor to see where she was.
She seems like she knows exactly where she is going. Rami thought to himself.
Jurie's eyes slid over the crowd of people that had begun to gather on the sides of the road, watching her and her companion's journey to Argentina's colony. Their curious stares didn't bother her. She had gotten used to them by now. Most of her missions sent her to Western countries anyway. The familiar feeling of her yumi, hitting against her back, calmed her down as she entered the main camp of the colony.
Young men, all dressed in the same uniform, of blue slacks, a red vest over a white shirt and white boots. They watched as the party of assassins past them, they were certainly a sight to see, dressed in dull, some even black finery, against the bright colours of the Spanish army uniform. One would even say suspicious. Very suspicious.
"Aaaaah welcome to Argentinian colony of Rio de la Plata!"
A large man intercepted the small band of foreigners. Rami had the sudden urge to step in front of Jurie small body as the lieutenant stared them down.
Jurie cleared her throat. "Pardon our intrusion sir, however we were invited here to speak with the Captain, he has invited us." With that She drew out the metallic red lined envelope.
The man's eyes flickered to Jurie, and she met his gaze with her striking honey-amber eyes. He sucked in a breath. He had only ever heard of one person with such piercing eyes, and even then they were only circulating rumours of a small girl, of Japanese lineage,who was possibly the best warrior of all Japan and Asia. Then his eyes met Rami's and he took a subconscious step back.
This one he knew of, very well.Rami Montague, otherwise known as the Arabian Knight. His emerald eyes,constantly filled with mischief were ones that he would recognise anywhere.
"Right this way." He choked out,leading them to a red tent. "Captain, these people have informed me that they have been invited to Argentina." The lieutenant, confirmed.
A young man, wearing a red, blue and gold suit uniform similar to that of the troops with black boots, looked up from the many documents and maps scattered across his desk.
"What is it Lieutenant Jasso?"
Lieutenant Jasso gestured to Jurie and Rami and their companions. "These were the people I was talking about."
The Captain stood up from his desk and made his way over to the Shadow Princess and Arabian Knight. "You have come despite your short notice. We are very grateful." He said. Turning to Jurie, he gently lifted her hand up to his lips, placing on it, a soft kiss."Milady."
Rami's annoyance flared and he narrowed his eyes at the Captain. Captain my ass, he thought bitterly, more like a flirt. But he couldn't shake away the feeling of disgust that hefelt for all men who treated women like an object of lust. He couldn't let that happen a third time. Especially notwith Jurie.
"Um... Thank you." Jurie responded,hastily drawing her hand away, hiding her heated cheeks. She was not yet accustomed to the common Western greetings.
"Captain Montero, this I'm sure you've heard of is Rami Montague, the Arabian Knight." The Lieutenant offered.
"Thank you. And yes I am here, Montero."Rami bit out. "No need to make me feel welcome."
"I am well aware of whom you are Montague, and am pleased that you could make it." Captain Montero answered coolly, fixing his eyes upon the tall, muscular, warrior, almost as if he was glaring. "We could surely use your help."
Rami glared back, his eyes hard,flashing dangerously.
Jurie treaded towards the map of Argentina.
"Where would you like us to start Captain Montero?" She queried,breaking the two men from their staring contest.
The Captain made his way swiftly back to his desk. "We are having trouble here and here." He replied softly,deftly sticking pins into the places he pointed to.
The Shadow Princess nodded her head. "I see."
Captain Montero watched her as strategies whirled around in Jurie's mind. He was quite taken by her. So small and beautiful, no one would've even considered that she was a lethal ninja.
"Thank you." Rami suddenly broke out.
"We'll start here." He announced, stabbing a small dagger into the pinpointed area before taking Jurie by the hand and dragging her out of the Captain's tent. His piercing emerald eyes, silently dared the Captain to challenge him.
