Chapter 7 : Write your Romeo

(Selene's POV)

Homework sucks, especially if it involves the brain having to think. Seriously thought, why do teachers do it? Do they not know that the torture of having to do the work in class is punishment enough, without having to bring it home too? After Padraig had left and Selene had managed to get over the shock of him being nice and actually kissing her, she turned her attention back to the real world, away from her daydreams. The unfriendly piece of paper that Padraig had left here was the dreaded English homework she wished she didn't have to do. As much as she enjoyed reading stories, she hated having to write them. She just found it impossible to put what was happening in her head down onto paper. Even though a small chocolate had been attached to the red scrawled piece of paper, it still filled Selene with dread.

Sighing in defeat, she knew it was unavoidable. picking up the piece of paper and quickly scoffing down the chocolate, she limped back upstairs to her bedroom. Sliding under her bed covers, she grabbed her laptop and plonked it down in front of her, pushing the pillows up behind her to make a backrest. God, this is going to be tedious, Selene thought to herself as she unfolded the piece of paper containing her task, and tried to decipher the scrawl of red writing on it. As much as she was thankful Padraig had copied down notes for her so she wouldn't fall behind on her work, she just wished he didn't have handwriting like a doctor. It was impossible to work out what it said, with weird letters in odd places, and some words which she wasn't even sure existed. Eventually, she was able to understand the gist of it, and her task was not as straight forward as she would have liked.

In your own words, write about a fictional character around the topic of 'Love'

That was her homework? Seriously? Her head dropped against her keyboard in a sigh of frustration. How on earth was she going to write about this, when she had never been in love?! Tell a lie, she had had a little thing going on with a boy in primary for about a week, but that was only a bit of fun. This was serious. How on earth was she going to write this? She had no idea where to even begin, let alone write a whole piece about it. The only piece of literature she had ever read that she could remember having anything to do with love was Romeo and Juliet, but they ended up killing themselves in the name of love, so she was pretty sure that wouldn't count. "What on earth can I use?", she questioned herself aloud, racking her brains.

Then a crazy idea popped into her head. The last book she had been reading was Dracula. Perhaps she could make a vampire love story? As ridiculous as the idea sounded, Selene was managing to think of some very good points. He was always depicted as this blood thirsty type stalking woman, wanting to drain them or make them his bride. But maybe that was just his way of showing his love, like how the French do the kissing cheek thing, regardless of gender. Selene knew vampires were immortal, and that they could live forever essentially, providing they looked after themselves and fed every now and again. But in the films, or what Selene always pictured from reading the book anyway, that vampires were always depicted as being old, Dracula in particular. Why didn't they look young?

"Why are you always so old?", she questioned aloud, picking up her copy of Dracula off her bedside table, looking at the frail looking, white haired vampire on the cover, his fangs dripping with blood. "Because I work hard, unlike you lazy bones". Selene screamed in alarm, nearly dropping her laptop off her lap. Her father stood laughing in her bedroom doorway as Selene calmed down after her little panic attack. "Bloody hell. Don't do that", she panted, attempting to recover, glaring at him angrily. "I'll stop doing it when you stop leaving the front door open", he replied seriously, striding into the room, sitting himself down next to her. Damn it, she cursed to herself. She'd forgotten to lock it after Padraig had left. Well, to be honest, it was kind of his fault for leaving her hot and flustered that she forgot about it.

"Sorry", she muttered as way of an apology, doing her puppy eyes to show she really didn't mean to forget. Her dad just rolled his eyes at her. "Well next time remember please, okay? Otherwise it might not be me scaring the life out of you", he chuckled, putting an arm around her. Now it was Selene's turn to roll her eyes. Typical fathers, always worrying about their home-alone daughters. "Dad, trust me. No one would ever be able to hurt me. I took those self defence classes, remember?", she prompted him, poking his chest. "Yes well, you know I worry about you. You're my only daughter. I'd hate for something to happen", he replied gently, his old grey eyes meeting hers. She knew that he meant well, but Selene was certain she would be able to handle herself in any situation should danger strike.

"Anyway, I better let you get on with your ..... ", he interrupted, glancing at her laptop, noticing the nearly blank document with only a heading. "Yeah. I'd rather eat snails", Selene admitted sighing. She had a long way to go, and the sky was already getting dark outside. After a quick peck on the cheek, her dad left, leaving her to get back on track with her work. It didn't take her long to get the ball rolling, and before long, she had already typed out over 3 pages, and was still powering on, full steam ahead. Even when she noticed the time, and glanced outside to see the sky pitch black, she still felt she could keep going, all the way till dawn. "There!", she announced finally, finishing off the last paragraph to her 6 paged essay just at the clock ticked over to 1am. Smiling smugly to herself, she saved her work and shoved her laptop into her schoolbag ready for tomorrow. There was no way that her English teacher would be able to complain about that.

"Finished?". This time she only jumped a little bit, but she couldn't help but smile as her dad's frame hung in the doorway, a drink in his hand. "Yep. Think I can finally sleep now", she concluded, lying back in her bed. "Well from what I saw passing by, you seemed pretty hooked on whatever it was you were writing", he chuckled, having a sip of his drink. "Just to satisfy my curiosity, what was it anyway?". Selene actually found herself grinning from ear to ear as she recounted every detail of what she'd just written. "It was a story about love. Gross I know, but, I made it about vampires", she happily announced, as if it was the best idea she had ever had. Even with the slightly surprised look off her dad, Selene continued. "I wrote about how vampires in stories and history are always depicted as being old. Well, I changed mine and put it as a new twist on the idea, that vampires are young looking, and that they could be living among us right now".

"Please don't tell me that you've discovered your mother is a vampire", he groaned, scratching his neck as Selene roared in laughter. "No, of course not. If she was, we'd be dead already", she giggled, wiping the tear out of her eye. "No. I mean, I wrote a story of me falling in love with a vampire". Even though Selene continued with her laughter, her dad remained silent, having a quick swig of his drink, uncertain. "Well, I better let you get some sleep", he concluded, and quickly left her room. She thought it was a bit odd of her dad to suddenly leave, but then he was a man of many mysteries, some of which she would never understand. Pulling up the covers and switching off her bedside light, Selene thought about the tall, dark haired young vampire she had wrote about in her essay as she drifted off to sleep, picturing him taking her hand and kissing her neck. Just how easy was it to fall in love with a vampire, a creature so dark and mysterious, but dangerous and sexy at the same time?

[ A / N : Quick update. Sorry if it is rubbish. I wanted to try and push the story on a little bit more but writers block stuck yet again. Still, at least we know that Selene has vampires stuck on her mind ... shame she didn't look outside her window ;) Remember to leave your thoughts/comments below xxxx love you all ]
