Chapter 6 : Is this love?
(Selene's POV)
It had all been just some terrible dream, she thought to herself as she began to wake. Her mind had been swirling with flashes of darkness and blood, the sounds of running footsteps chasing her, gradually getting closer, feeling a cold breathe down her neck, before it all became nothing. She hated having dreams like this, the kind where you are trying to run away from something, a mysterious monster that you never see, knowing it is hiding in the shadows. Doctors will just tell you that it's your imagination, but what do doctors know about nightmares really? What scares you can only hurt you in your sleep, right?
Rubbing her tired eyes, Selene rolled over to glance at her alarm clock. 10:36am. God, I must have been tired, she thought letting out a sigh, falling back down onto the pillow. She hated to admit it, but she really wasn't a morning person at all. She hated the thought of having to get up early, when all her body wanted to do was continue sleeping. It was at that precise moment when she felt a cold panic race down her spine; wasn't it a school day? Jumping bold upright, she grabbed her phone lying on her beside table and hastily unlocked it, opening up the calender, just to confirm her suspicions. Wednesday. Shoot! She was suppose to be in school! Throwing the covers off her, she leaped straight out of bed, but tumbled onto the floor in the process letting out a massive yell. "Ouch!", she yelped, quickly grasping at her knee. Then she saw the bandage and remembered; her dad had said that she could stay off today.
"Ugh!", she growled, reaching behind her, pulling her duvet over her onto the floor. Now she wished she was still asleep. Her leg hurt and she was still feeling exhausted, even after the sudden rush of thinking she was late. Being a teenager was just too much hard work, but then it did have some perks. It counted as an excuse for staying up late and sleeping in on weekends. Not that she really went out anywhere or did anything exciting; Selene was just a normal girl who would rather spend her money on the next novel that the latest fashion accessory. Curled up in her little cocoon, her phone vibrated on the floor beside her, having accidentally dropped it during her haste. What she read on it instantly made her heart flutter.
Hey, how you doing Louis Lane? ;) Everyone has been calling me Clark and insisting I start wearing glasses. I think the whole school knows what happened ...
- Padraig
Because my reputation wasn't that popular to begin with, Selene sighed reading the text. Although they did have a point, he had the perfect build for Superman, and had technically 'saved' her by carrying her Superman style. Heck, she wasn't complaining, well she was a little bit; she hadn't been conscious for it, so she could only imagine what it must have been like to be carried in those strong arms. She could just imagine her head resting against his chest, his muscles rising and falling as he held her, his appearance almost god-like to all those around him, his face full of concern and care, his eyes looking longingly at her, his lips just perfectly ... Nope. She never stood a chance ever catching his eye, let alone him ever falling for her. Not even a 7% chance. She was forever stuck in the 'friend' zone.
Well be thankful they didn't film it. I'm sure they will forget about it soon enough. But thank you, promise I won't do it again :) x
- Selene
And again with the kiss! She slapped her forehead hard once she realized what she'd sent, again. She might as well just face it and give up. He was never going to be interested in her, not when all the supermodel types were stalking him at any opportune moment. Selene might as well just crawl back inside her head with her fictional characters and continue dating them. Maybe one day she might get lucky and one of them appear to her one night when she needs them most?
Not even waiting to see if she got a reply back from Padraig, she climbed up to her feet and limped over to the bathroom, and quickly had a shower. Throwing on a grey t-shirt that was one of her dads and some underwear, she slipped on her mis-matched striped/pok-a-dot socks and took the dangerous journey downstairs. Not wanting to risk it walking down, Selene did it the fun/toddler way by bobbing down each step on her butt. Oh the joys of acting like a kid she thought, chuckling to herself as she finally reached the bottom. Walking with a bit of a limp, Selene made it through to the kitchen and spotted exactly what she wanted; a glass of orange juice, a juicy red apple and the toaster loaded with bread laid out on the counter for her, with a note.
Breakfast is served Sleeping Beauty. Should be home before your mother is. I'l treat you to your favourite dinner. Also, someone shifty outside the house last night so keep the door locked
- Dad x
"He is such a worrier", Selene chuckled reading the note he'd left balanced on top of the food as she popped the toaster down to cook. Drinking her orange down in a few gulps and grabbing her food, she tottered over to the sofa, slumped down and grabbed the remote. No sooner had she started eating and made herself comfortable when the doorbell rang. "Ugh. I told you already, we don't need new gutters! Now do one!", she shouted towards the front door, refusing to move. Again the doorbell rang again, quickly followed by a frantic hammering on the door. Right, that's it, Selene groaned as she got up, storming towards the front door.
"I SAID GO AWAY!", she yelled, pulling the door open in such fury that it nearly flew straight off it's hinges. "Woah!", the recipient yelled, stumbling backwards in surprise. Selene's face was initially red in fury at being disturbed, but now it was burning a deep crimson in embarrasement. Padraig just stood there defensively on her doorsteps, hands raised in alarm. The noise she let out was something between a shriek and a sigh, which she didn't believe to be even humanly possible to create, but somehow she managed it. "Padraig? W-What are you doing here?", she stammered, brushing her hair behind her ear, trying to recover. It was middle of the day, on a school day, so what on earth was he doing standing on her doorstep?
His cheeks seemed to glow as he looked at his, his blonde hair almost glistening in the sun. Damn, why did he have to look so good, she thought. "Well I managed to bunk off early as I've got free periods this afternoon so thought I'd check up on you", he answered, flashing her a smile that made her feel weak at the knees. Double damn. "O-oh, right. Well I-I alright, I guess", Selene replied a little flustered, still trying to get over the shock of it all. "You okay? You look a little off ...", Padraig trailed off as he looked at her, a little concerned. That's when Selene did let out a large gasp of shock; she was barely dressed! She felt herself burning up even more, trying to conceal herself behind the door feebly, her bare legs feeling suddenly very on show. She wished her t shirt was a lot longer right now, as it barely covered her panties. "I-I am just, a little, erm, tired", Selene managed to spill out as an excuse.
He seemed genuinely concerned for her and stepped closer, putting a reassuring hand on her arm, smiling gently. "Well I brought the homework you got from English, and also picked up your favourite sweets. Thought you could do with a pick-up after yesterday". What Selene really wanted to do and what she did were two very different things; instead of spilling out her deepest desires and love for her friend, she just smiled and nodded her head, opening the door further for him to enter. It was like he didn't need telling twice, and just waltz right in, feeling like he was at home, something he'd probably done millions of times before in ladies houses. Just thinking about the amount of girls he'd probably been with at school did make Selene's stomach crawl a little as she watched his back disappear through to the front room. She couldn't help herself, and let her eyes fall down to look at his too-perfect arse. If only, she thought, shutting the door outside.
"These are for you", he chuckled, holding out some pieces of folded paper, some scrawled red writing just readable. "Thanks. Just when I thought I could get away from homework, it comes and hunts me instead", she sighed, collapsing down onto the sofa beside him. Padraig just laughed at her, his chuckle almost resonating down in her rib cage. "Well wouldn't you rather I hunt you down, and not Mrs Pickle?", he laughed, playfully knocking her arm. He did have a point, for two reasons. Firstly, Mrs Pickle was like the Miss Trunchbull from Matilda just ripped straight from the page, a horrible woman who would welcome back caning to dish out disciple. However, as for the suggestion of Padraig hunting her down ... well, who wouldn't the well built, tall, handsome blonde man chasing them down?
Maybe it was the fact she caught herself staring into his dreamy blue eyes was why she hadn't actually replied to his question, but she didn't care. His eyes were worth getting lost in, especially seeing as she didn't have to worry about getting distracted by idiot kids bumping into her. "Selene", he said gently, almost like a whisper. His hand that hand been resting on top of his thigh shifted, and now it rested against her bare thigh, just above the bandage on her knee. Her skin tingled like it had been touched by wild fire, and it made a shiver run up her spine. She'd never been touched by a guy before, let alone sat this close to one. Her heart was racing like a marathon in her chest. Was he about to ... no. Don't be silly Selene, this isn't like in the movies her mind screamed at her. But she didn't want to believe it; she wanted it to happen just like in the countless romantic movies, where they share ... the kiss.
His large fingers moved a little on her leg, and she could have sworn that he's just stroked her. Her mind was becoming overloaded and she didn't know if she could cope with it all. First the touch, then her name, being whispered again, his voice as rough as a lion but with the tenderness of a bear. Then his eyes, his perfectly shaped eyes just seemed to jump out of his slightly sunken sockets, almost drawing her in with a hypnotic stare. She felt herself drawing closer, closer, and closer. At any second she felt her nose was going to collide with his, but his hand, his other hand came up and cupped her cheek. Oh my god, it's going to happen, she practically screamed inside her head. He was actually going to kiss her! Her handsome hero was going to give her, the damsel who was in distress, the lovers kiss!
Trying her hardest to not shake in en trepidation, she allowed his hand to begin to travel up her thigh, getting higher as his other hand drew her face in closer. She didn't want to stop him. She had dreamed so long about meeting the right guy, even having a boyfriend, and now, she was going to get the chance to possibly make out with the hottest one in her whole year group! Her body reacted automatically, knowing what it was suppose to do, even with this being her first time. Her eyes instinctively closed, her lips pressing gently forward, her heart catching in her chest. Any second now!
Well, she got the kiss, but not perhaps the one she wanted. Instead of his perfectly rounded lips meeting hers, at the last second, his lips changed course, and rested themselves against her heated forehead, letting a long, tender kiss linger, before he pulled himself away. Her heart felt both torn and ecstatic at the same time; she'd finally been kissed, but denied the kiss she thought she was going to get. Maybe it was just her jumping to conclusions. Remember Selene, he's the cool kid and you're the nerd; it is never going to happen.
"I'll call you, okay", he said gently, easing himself up from behind her, straightening out his jacket and jeans, giving his hair a quick brush back before smiling down at her. "Don't go getting into any more fights with bits of glass. I don't think the 'superhero' fame will do my reputation much good", he chuckled before giving her a wave goodbye, and dismissed himself out, shutting the front door behind him. Selene just sat there, her mouth hanging clean open. He smiled at her, he'd looked after her, he'd touched her, he'd kissed her ... was this love? "Well, life is never like a fairytale", she mused quietly to herself as she pulled her t shirt back down, realising she'd been showing off her panties at how she'd been sat. She just hoped that Padraig hadn't noticed
