Chapter 2 : Bloody Mondays

(Selene's POV)

"Selene! Wake up now or you're going to be late!", her mother shrieked up the stairs as the alarm beside her bed went off for the hundredth time. A few seconds later, pounding footsteps stormed up the stairs and her bedroom door was flung open, shortly followed by her bedroom curtains. "Mum, no", Selene moaned, burying her head under the covers as the sunlight spilled into her room. "No, get up now. Every day you're like this. It's no surprise you're struggling in school. Too busy staying up all night on that bloody thing", her mother said seriously, snatching her daughters phone from her bedside table. "I won't say it again. Up, Now!", she ordered, before slamming the door shut as she left, the smell of burnt toast wafting up the stairs.

Sighing and rubbing her eyes, Selene emerged from under her covers, blinking, letting her eyes adjust. Glancing over at the alarm clock that still buzzed away, it only read 7:30am; far to early to be getting up, Selene groaned. Mornings never agreed with Selene, especially Mondays, as it only meant one thing; double Science lesson with the twins. Admittedly, she didn't mind science, especially when they were doing the experiments, but what she hated most were the trolls. Not like actual trolls, they were twins, but they behaved like trolls most of the time. The two twin sisters, blonde and too darkly fake tanned to be healthy, sat on her table, and no matter how much she had pleaded to her teacher to let her swap tables, he'd refused, saying she could do with the company. But that was the problem; no one liked her.

It all started when she was younger, being a scared, terrified child finding themselves being dumped in a playground, left abandoned by the parents. That was just her first day in school, and she was still just as terrified to be anywhere different or new. As she stood there, her black shoulder length hair platted at either side of her head, her bag on her back, she was approached by them, the girls. A swarm of pink, blonde and curls, the pack of young girls who turned out to be her future classmates surrounded her. "Hey, you're new. We don't like new people". "Eww, look at her. She's ugly". "Girl, you came to the wrong school. Go back to the care home". The insults were horrid, and all from girls that were about 11 years old. They pulled her hair, called her names, and reduced her to tears even before the school bell had rang to start the day.

Selene hid herself in the trees and hedges just on the side of the school grounds, crying her poor little heart out. Eventually one of the teachers found her, Mrs Cook, and took her inside. "I am sorry about the girls Selene. They aren't used to having someone new joining. They will settle down eventually", she'd said reassuringly to her as she escorted her down the now empty school corridoor to her new classroom. Selene had joined the school a year late, after being transferred from where she'd lived before with her family. Her mother never fully explained why they had to move, and so suddenly. Apparently it had something to do with the disappearance of her sisters daughter, but that was all her mother had told her.

"This is your new class", Mrs Cook said, snapping her from her thoughts. Without even having to look in properly, she could see the sea of pink sat at the back of the class, smiling smugly at each other as they sat at their tables gossiping. Selene couldn't prepare herself quick enough, and she had the door in front of her opened, and a hand push her on her back, sending her into the classroom. The tables were set out in rows, the back row being next to the door, with high widows on the opposite side letting the sunlight stream in. Selene must have quickly counted about 30 kids in the room, their heads all sharply turned in her direction as she came in, a hushed silence ensuing. "Everyone, I'd like you to meet Selene. She has just transferred from another school and so is going to be in our class now", Mrs Cook said calmly, but with a stern tone in her voice, her eyes firmly looking at the troublesome girls at the back of the class. "Hello Selene", the class chanted, almost like a choir, except the girls at the back, who remained stoney faced and silent. "Go and take a seat next to Christine. She will be your work partner", she said calmly to Selene as she closed the class door behind her, her heels clicking on the wooden floor as she walked up to the front of the class, taking her seat at her desk in front of the blackboard. Nervously, her eyes darting around the class, Selene made her way past the tables, recieving hisses off the girls to sit at the end of the row nearest the windows at the front of the class. The young girl now sat next to her, a dirty blonde haired girl wearing braces and thick black-rimmed glasses smiled at her, and shuffled her seat along. "I'm Christine", she whispered, offering out her hand enthusiastically for her to shake. Selene accepted, and before long, Selene felt right at home.

"BREAKFAST! NOW!", her mother shouted from downstairs, startling Selene. She was pretty sure that she had a problem with her daydreaming, but now, having to drag her half-asleep body out of bed, she'd much rather still be stuck there. "Coming", she moaned, rubbing her tired eyes as she slipped out of the covers, the cool air hitting her skin, making her shiver. Even though it had only turned October a few days ago, the cooler weather was closing in. Routing through the piles of arranged clothes on the floor, she pulled out her jeans and a black n white striped tshirt, slipping them on and tossing her pjs onto the bed. Selene's room was the smallest in the whole house, only able to just fit in a single bed and a small chest of drawers. She'd even painted the room herself a blood red, with her dad helping to paper one of the walls with a black and white pattern, as well as hanging a mirror. She swore that Harry Potters room he ended up having in the Chamber of Secrets at the Dudley's was bigger than hers. Grabbing a brush, she quickly tried to flatten down her wildly untamed black hair, but eventually gave up, resorting to tying it back in a ponytail out of the way. Grabbing her coat and bag off the floor, she gave a quick glance at herself in the mirror before heading downstairs to satisfy her growling stomach.

Trudging down the carpeted stairs, Selene looked at the large family photograph framed on wall and sighed. It had been the only time all her family had been together in one place long enough. She was only about 10 years old when the picture was taken, but it had all of the family that were living at the time; her mum, dad, younger brother, her mums sister, husband and daughter, as well as her dad's brother. It all seemed so perfect, but then nothing perfect ever lasts. Her dad's brother had died not long after the picture was taken in a car crash with a drunk driver, and he father had never been the same since. He soon took up drinking, and started to work longer hours, so she hardly ever saw him anymore. The same happened to her mothers sisters husband, as he ended up dying young after suffering a heart attack not long after their daughter was born. Selene looked at the young happy face of Jude, her frizzy ginger hair stuck out at odd angles as she sat cross legged next to her in the picture. They had even worn matching tartan dresses for the occasion. Jude was the best cousin she could have hoped for, as they were the same age, their birthdays only being a few days apart from each other. But that's when it had happened, the night Jude disappeared

"Are you going to move or what?". Selene jumped slightly and had to quickly grab onto the handrail to stop her falling backwards down the stairs. Her brother, Jay, was about 5 years younger than her, but he still thought he was the boss of the house. Stood at the top of the stairs with iPod in one hand, his Gameboy in the other, he glared at Selene annoyed that she had stopped him. Aged 12 and grouchy like a teenager, the dirty blonde haired, scruffily dressed brother of Selene continued on his descent, pushing past his sister and down into the kitchen. Selene rolled her eyes; he was getting more like his dad everyday, which just made her life more of a living nightmare. Even though she had practically helped raise him and look after him, now he was older, he no longer took any interest in her. Before she would be able to get as many hugs and kisses as she'd have liked, but now, not even a simple hello or thank you. I guess a lot of things happen when you grown up, she thought, as she trudged down the remaining stairs, following her brother through to the kitchen.

As she predicted, a cold cup of tea and two slices of burnt toast lay on a plate on the kitchen work top for her. "I told you to come down when I shouted", her mother informed her, brushing past her on the way out as her small brown terrier dog followed closely on her heels. Selene rolled her eyes before downing the cold tea in one and tossing the toast into the food recycle bin, putting the empty cup and plate into the sink. "I'm leaving now Jay, you coming?", she asked her brother, slinging her satchel bag over her shoulder. Slouched on the sofa, feet up on the coffee table, eating a bowl of cereal watching the TV, Jay just shrugged his shoulders. "I'm running him into school", her mother answered for him, brushing back into the room, tutting at seeing Selene's plates dumped in the sink. Her dyed blonde shoulder length hair swayed as she shook her head, looking up at her daughter stood there waiting. "You aren't going in like that are you?", she asked, looking at her daughters somewhat casual appearance, noting the jeans and tshirt. "Why not? I am allowed to wear what I like remember, because the school got rid of the uniform policy years ago", Selene challenged, grabbing an apple from the fruit bowl, and already turning and leaving the room. "You'll catch a death of a cold", her mother shouted as she left. "Take a jacket with you, you silly girl".

Selene bit back the reply she wanted to say, knowing full well she didn't have the strength to have an argument before the school day had even started. Checking her appearance in the hallway mirror, she tapped her pockets and went through the mental check list in her head of her morning routine. Keys, wallet, bag, food, phone. Her hand stayed planted on her left jean pocket, tapping her hipbone underneath before cursing under her breath. "Mum, I need my phone", she said, nearly storming back into the kitchen to find her mum standing arms crossed, her phone in her hand. "Why should I give it to you? You are on it every night before you go to sleep, sometimes until 2am! No wonder you are like a zombie every time you wake up and complaining you are always tired". Selene growled under her breath, her mum would never understand. Being stuck in a house where you can't have a decent conversation with anyone can be really boring. She spent nearly every night talking to all of her pen pal friends off her social networks, and mostly because of the time difference meant she had to stay up late. She loved talking to them, but just wished that she could actually meet them. They talked about all sorts; Books, films, celebrities. But not that any of her real life friends understood that; because she didn't have any, not any more. "If you complain to me one more time about being tired, you will never see it again. Understood?", her mum threatened, holding out the phone to her. "Fine", Selene said reluctantly, taking her phone and swiftly leaving the house.

Once the front door slammed shut, Selene breathed a sigh of relief. Sometimes she felt like she would be trapped in that house forever, never being able to get a break or peace and quiet. Although the sun was bright and shining, there was a little breeze today. It was the start of October, and Selene was in her first year of A Level studies, after only just about managing to get decent GCSE grades. It was times like these she envied her younger brother; he was brilliant at maths and science, subjects she struggled in. Her father was a mechanic and her mum worked from home as an accountant for some business firm, so where Selene got her artistic flare from she had no idea. She loved anything to do with art, and wanted to become an artist for her career, much to the horror of her family, who insisted that she become an accountant too. Sighing again, Selene walked down the drive to the main road, and began to walk the way to school. Her neighbourhood wasn't anything special, think rows and rows of houses with long straight roads running down them with back alleyways linking them all, and that's her area. She walked past all the more expensive houses as they were on her way to school, but to get to the school in a hurry if she was late, she would have to go through the run down area. Why her parents decided that Detroit was the best place to live would forever confuse her, and in the most boring, dull suburb of it too.

A car horn honking as it drove past startled her out of her little walking thoughts. Somehow the back of that car seemed familiar, and then it hit her like a tone of bricks; it was her mothers car. Selene was late for school! "Damn it!", Selena practically screamed watching the car disappear down the road. Grasping hold of her bag, she set off at a run, pelting down the sidewalk as fast as she could to the crossroads, chasing the car. Up ahead, the car turned left down the next street as Selene felt the stitch in her chest growing. Turning down the side alleyway running parallel to the road, Selene ran down the alley, leaping over the turned over trashcan blocking the way. As the darkness of the alley grew with the shadows off the adjoining houses, Selene glanced up at the sky and saw it darkening, a distant rumble of thunder. Without warning, the sky opened up, and unleashed a torrent of rain. Gasping at the wet and coldness, Selene slipped, feeling her ankle give way underneath her, the last thing she saw was the alleyway floor.

Trembling and shaking, Selene opened her eyes confused; what on earth was she doing lying on the floor? Sitting up, she felt the sharp jolt of pain shoot up her leg from her ankle and the throbbing pain start in her head. "Ouch!", Selene yelped, grasping her ankle as the rain poured down on her. Moving her foot slightly, she noticed it now only hurt a bit, luckily she'd only twisted it. Her knee was bleeding as her jeans were ripped from where she'd fallen and hit the floor. The steady dripping of rain off her nose now turned red, and she gasped, realising now she'd cut her forehead too. Staggering to her feet, Selene pulled herself up, ignoring the pain, and continued to limp down the alley in the direction of the school.

10 minutes late, Selene dragged herself in through the school doors and up the stairs to her science lesson. Soaked through to the bone, hair knotted and wild, blood and dirt down her face and clothes, she practically collapsed onto the class floor as she opened the door. "Eww, what happened to you ugly?", the two horrible blonde twins chanted as she collapsed into her chair, the rest of the class oblivious to her entrance. Selene scowled at them before resting her throbbing head down on the desk. It didn't matter if no one noticed her, no one paid her any attention anyway, regardless of whether they cared or not. It was going to be a long, bloody Monday.

A/N: We all have Mondays like that I'm sure, only not as 'bloody' I hope. Every family has it's problems, I know I do. Hope you all like this. Please comment/ thoughts/ etc, and thank you all again so much for enjoying it so far. Will update soon.
