Chapter Forty-Four: Patronus
The girl thought a little before answering.
"Thank you, Severus," she exclaimed as she took the plants and smelled them with her eyes closed. And they smell delicious," she added, looking back at the boy.
Severus just smiled as a reddish color rose up his cheeks.
"How do you feel?" Asked the boy after a pause.
"Almost perfect," she began, "as soon as this leg heals, I will return to normal. It still hurts a little," she paused briefly, turning her head to where Lucius was. "Although I bet not as much as Malfoy, do you have any idea what happened to him?" The last whispered to avoid being heard.
Severus paled, remembering what had happened brought him the same feelings, but he couldn't lie to his friend. He swallowed and armed himself with courage to confess his mistake.
The boy got closer to the girl before he started talking.
"I cast him a spell," Severus confessed with the look of the little envelope of Severus, "he and other Slytherin entered the Great Hall singing a song mocking your situation in the infirmary." He paused to catch his breath. I couldn't take it anymore and cast a spell that I had never tried before, I didn't know the seriousness of the consequences." Severus stopped for a moment, the image of blood on the dining room returned to his mind and prevented him from speaking.
"What happened next, Severus?" continued questioning little Black.
Severus looked up, shaking his head as he breathed to relax.
"The spell caused him great and instantaneous cuts and began..." Severus didn't speak any more, no tears ran down his face, but no movement was visible, he was impressed by what he had committed and remained just as regretful.
The girl still did not understand then how it was possible for Lucius to remain alive.
"But how did they save him?" Calynn asked with concern in her voice.
"I also knew the counter spell, but panic blocked my mind for a moment." He paused and this time he spoke even lower. "It is these things that remind me of the acts of the Death Eaters, my wand has become very powerful in black magic spells, am I supposed to be proud of it?"
Little Black pondered those words for a moment, she knew that same question had been asked on previous occasions.
"No, we could never be proud of it, Severus," Calynn said after a moment seriously, the boy needed support, advice.
Silence reigned in the room for a few moments, both reflected on what they had said.
"Have you heard what Longbottom has done?" Severus questioned more annoyingly than before.
Little Black remembered what her friends had told her, and courage showed up again in her.
"Meryl and Lily have told me, why is the school guarded by aurors?" Asked the girl.
"Dumbledore is worried. It is believed that Druella wants to infiltrate the castle to get you out of here or to have Hogwarts in the hands of the Death Eaters," Severus commented.
"Do you think that will happen?" Asked the worried little girl.
"Druella's desire to have you at home is too big, she knows that you have to come to learn what you didn't learn when you were living in Spinner's End, but there is a reason why she needs you with them. I think she thinks you're planning something with Dumbledore," Severus commented.
"They've got it right," little Black continued. "Dumbledore wants to protect me from both of them and I think he will take the opportunity to approach Voldemort," Calynn said seriously.
Severus was going to add something when the nurse returned to warn that it was time for Severus to leave.
"See you," little Black said goodbye wistfully without getting up from her bed much.
Severus only gave him a slight smile as he walked until he disappeared through the door.
The girl was left alone while thinking about everything that had happened recently, she settled in bed, just realized how tired she felt.
The nurse arrived with a glass of milk and handed it to the girl who got back to take it, that freshness she felt in the dairy loved it.
"Here you go," the nurse mentioned when he handed it to her.
"Thank you," said Little Black before going back to bed, and after acquiring a comfortable position she was able to sleep without interruption.
The next day, the little girl got up with the sun's rays coming through the windows, the infirmary was completely silent, it was obvious that Lucius was sleeping. She sat on the bed and took some of the fruit that was on the next table, the strawberry was her favorite.
"Good morning." The nurse arrived, opened more the curtains that hid the bed and poured juice in a glass that was also next to her bed. "Today we will test those bones to see if it is possible for you to get out of here today," said the excited woman.
The little girl began to put her feet on the floor, stood up and began to take small steps. At first, she did it with fear, but she saw that the potion had worked, she felt like new. She even started running a little before the nurse stopped her. "It is clear that you can leave now, have breakfast, pick up your belongings because remember that you have been here for about a month and you can leave for class," said the nurse before leaving.
The girl felt happy, after quite some time she could move around the school grounds, she would have to reach her friends in Defense Against the Dark Arts, her favorite class. She took the fruit and began to devour it while taking the juice in big drinks. When she finished, she picked up some presents they had brought as sweets and toys, picked up her wand that was next to her table and opened the drawer that was next to her to ensure she didn't forget anything when she noticed an envelope she didn't know was there and opened quickly.
Calynn:
I brought this to you because you worry me too much. I hope you like flowers.
Severus
P.S:
The girl looked at the missing letter again, after the colon of the postscript there was a blank, what did that mean? The little girl took the paper and tried to see it through with the help of the sun's rays, but it was useless anyway, she put it back in the envelope and with everything else she left the infirmary where she had lived a month.
She climbed the stairs and left what she didn't have to take to DCAO and went back down some steps to get to the living room. The girl walked happily, but upon entering the classroom she returned to the reality she lived in Hogwarts. A lot of eyes were on her, some with expressions of sadness or concern, but there were others who did not reflect anything else than hate, she kept walking in the middle of that silence until she reached a chair next to Lily and sat with her looking down, the idea that everyone knew her secret had not assimilated it so well until that moment. Calynn opened the class book when Galatea entered the class with her same authoritarian attitude as usual until she reached the other end of the classroom. The woman began to observe her students and paused with her eyes fixed on little Black, the teacher didn't seem happy at all.
"Have you returned from your eternal vacation Miss Black?" the woman questioned with certain tone of mockery.
"And quite advanced," she replied, opening the book while feeling the teacher's gaze fixed on her, she realized that she was holding her wand and began to feel that attempt to invade her mind when she understood what it was.
"Occlumency?" Whispered the teacher.
"And Legilimens," said Little Black as she tried to enter the teacher's mind, with the wand in her hand, this was something she still did not do very well, but managed to perceive a thought in a disturbing tone:
"Dumbledore"
The little Death Eater did not fully understand that thought and in that second of confusion, the teacher took the opportunity to get Calynn out of her mind with ease.
The students looked at them nervously while Severus watched little Black with a lot of admiration, after that they returned to class.
"What were you thinking?" Cried Lily, worried. "You can't fight with a teacher."
"She provoked me! I could not contain myself, although it was very strange because the only, I managed to observe from her mind was only the word 'Dumbledore', but she looked quite worried." she finished with a shrug.
Lily didn't answer anything, but Severus still looked pretty thoughtful.
After the busy first day of school after her secret was revealed she was ready to go to take classes with Dumbledore, at least she knew that she could learn there without hearing teasing from her classmates and without having to give so many explanations. She reached the bottom of the bird and said the password, since both teachers had chosen to always give the little girl access in case, she needed anything. She climbed the steps slowly, but began to hear some voices and stopped to listen carefully.
"What if it's not her, Dumbledore? Besides, there are more dangers than a simple curse in that place," Galatea mentioned to the professor.
"I don't think simple is the best word to describe it," Professor McGonagall mentioned this time.
The little girl had a hard time listening carefully so she stuck even more to the door.
"Dumbledore, no wizard has been able to do that, why are you so sure of..." But it was interrupted by the little Death Eater that had fallen into the room when the door had opened thanks to her weight.
"I'm sorry, Professor," she began as she stood up and shook her robe. "I didn't expect to find your office busy, if you wish I can come back later," she said as she prepared to move towards the exit.
"No, in fact, Master Galatea was retiring, right?" He looked up at the teacher's eyes, waiting for her approval.
"Sure, Mr. Principal, I'm leaving," the teacher said as she passed Calynn and gave her a look of concern and curiosity at the same time.
The little girl sat in front of the desk as usual, Professor McGonagall was around the office, it was not the first time she stayed in one of the classes.
"Legilimency?" Began Dumbledore. "I did not think you would dominate it quickly."
"I could only observe a single thought," the little girl replied indifferently.
"You won't believe that most of your classmates have this ability, will you?" the professor answered with enough ingenuity. The girl just suppressed a proud smile. "Keep practicing, but today we are going to see two things: Expecto Patronum and some spells to ask for help," Dumbledore reported. What do you know about the Patronus?" Little Black's silence made the teacher continue. "Expectro Patronum is a spell that can give us protection against certain situations, in addition, it can be our guide in a dangerous position. What I still consider most important is the different Patronus between the different magicians, each representing the essence of each magician," explained the professor. "Professor McGonagall can give us a brief demonstration," he said, looking back at the teacher.
The woman took out her wand and spoke the words:
"Expectro Patronum!"
And a kind of blue line began to emerge from the tip of the wand that formed a little by little figure until a rather majestic cat was created that began to walk around the office, getting on the director's desk and slipping through the bookshelves they were raising the room. Little Black looked amazed.
"Besides, the Patronus can protect us from the dementors, Miss Black," Dumbledore exclaimed after the cat had vanished, got up from his place and went to a kind of chest. "The ministry does not let us have dementors at Hogwarts, but I have requested this for security reasons," said the professor. "Are you ready, teacher?" He finished addressing McGonagall, who had the wand in her hand and nodded.
Dumbledore lifted the golden chest and from there came a dark-looking creature, had a ghostly black complexion and did not have very defined features; however, the teacher kept calm and after a moment of concentration exclaimed:
"Expectro Patronum!"
The same effect happened again, only this time the cat went directly against the dementor making him return to the chest while Dumbledore closed it again.
"Thanks, professor." McGonagall just attended. "Now, Miss Black is your turn, let's practice the spell a little more."
They spent about twenty minutes practicing the pronunciation of the spell without a wand since she has problems spelling the spell, but the really difficult thing happened when they went to the practice part with the use of the wand.
"You have to think about something really happy, Miss Black, something that when you remember it brings you a feeling of joy," said the professor.
The little Death Eater went completely blank, at first, she thought it was a joke by Dumbledore, but not seeing any sign of this she understood that it was serious. The little girl tried to remember happy things, but in the end something had gone wrong; the afternoons in the garden of Spinner's End reminded her of the moments where she was tortured by her parents, the study nights with Frank reminded her of that lost love and the betrayal he had caused, the visit to Diagon Alley brought her to the insults on Malfoy's part, the talks with Severus reminded her of her horrible day when she was marked with her left forearm; but she remembered one that might be useful, one that only brought her a feeling of tranquility and happiness.
"I think I have one," the girl said, trying to concentrate completely.
"Try to see it as if you lived it again and when you have it, pronounce the spell with enough concentration," Dumbledore explained patiently.
The little girl breathed to relax so she could concentrate, closed her eyes and said:
"Expectro Patronum!"
The girl opened her eyes hopefully to see only a spark coming out of her wand, smiled embarrassed and tried again. Dumbledore watched her patiently while correcting her or giving her advice, helping her with the position of the wand, the diction and with the handling of the memory.
A few minutes later, a little before finishing class that day the teacher asked him a question:
"What's your wand, Miss Black?"
"Erin and its core is made of Dragon Heart Fiber," said the girl, watching the wand.
"It is a really powerful wand, it can be changed to the dark side or serve as a protection very easily, it is very moldable, this can also be useful when practicing spells of high difficulty," Dumbledore said.
"Like Unforgivable Curses..." Calynn said, remembering the time she tortured that poor man.
Dumbledore just nodded before speaking.
"I think it depends on the person the uses he wants to give his wand," said the director.
The class ended a few minutes later and the girl left the office to go to her common room, failed attempts to make a Patronus had exhausted her. She climbed the steps to the bedroom and found Lily who had fallen asleep and Meryl reading a book that closed instantly when she saw little Black arrive.
"What did you read?" The little Death Eater went to Meryl.
"A book about werewolves; I'm planning the jokes that I will make to that Lupin if his little friends surpass the line," Meryl exclaimed before giving a yawn, "but I think I will continue tomorrow."
Both girls said goodbye and lay down in their respective beds ready to enjoy the dream, or at least that little Black wanted when she observed that everything was getting dark and around her began to hear voices impossible to hear, surrounded by some screams; but out of nowhere she began to feel great fear before someone said her name and the little Death Eater exclaimed a cry of sadness to get up quite startled; Meryl watched her from her bed to see her friend go back to sleep.
Little Black knew that something dark was coming, she felt it on her left forearm.
"He's close," she whispered before sleeping again without interruptions during the night.
