Chapter eight: Words
For a moment they were silent, it was obvious that Calynn's appearance said more than she would have liked. They looked for some part of the tree that would cover them enough of the constant rain, after all, Lily and Calynn were already completely soaked. They found just a place where it was kept as dry as possible and they sat together to talk about it.
Lily and Severus just watched Calynn, waiting for her to say something, to explain to them what had really happened, but the silence was deafening, it was only invaded by Calynn's laments that remained with many tears on her face.
"What happened?" Asked the redhead with some nervousness in her voice. Her face only reflected how scared she was about her friend's appearance and everything she had managed to hear from outside that house.
"Just I..." she began, she didn't know very well what to say, she had mixed feelings and many revelations she still couldn't assimilate. "I never thought they were able to do that to me, to torture me!" She said loudly, tears brightened as Lily hugged her to keep her from crying more, but it was impossible. "I am their daughter; I am their girl; shouldn't they love me?" She whispered, she wasn't sure if that question was for her or her friends. At least Lily and Severus hadn't heard that last sentence.
"How did they torture you?" Severus questioned quite worried, but without avoiding a slight tone of curiosity.
The girl tried to calm down a little, took a breath and tried to lower that anxiety and worry that had filled her body. She began to explain what happened, from the moment she arrived at her home until she had met Lily. She had trouble assimilating the cause of many things and how her life had taken a complete turn in a couple of days.
"You mean the Cruciatus curse?" Asked Severus when Calynn mentioned that they had used the "Crucio" spell against her and all the pain it had caused her. Calynn wasn't sure what to answer, she wasn't sure if they were both the same, so she preferred to remain silent and just shrug. "It is one of the three Unforgivable Curses, it causes immense pain in the whole body, as if you were burning from the inside, it is used to torture..." the boy finished while Calynn nodded, she knew it was that curse.
"That's why you were so pale when you left your home!" The redhead said aloud, had connected the ideas when remembering the first impression of her friend when she could escape, she could not even walk well. She would never have imagined that a spell could cause so many consequences on some people.
"And how is it that the magical world allows any magician to torture another?" Asked little Black with some annoyance, it seemed illogical that a world with so many possibilities allowed the existence and use of such curses.
"It is illegal to occupy that spell," the boy answered confidently. "It is generally used by Death Eaters or people from the ministry to end the followers of the Dark Lord."
The gesture of both girls after what the boy had just said was a mixture between confusion and worry.
"What is a Death Eater?" both girls asked in unison.
"They are magicians who practice black magic. It is a group that follows the orders of the Dark Lord," said Severus. "They will kill all those who are not on their side or resist being."
"That means my parents are Death Eaters," said the girl. "Today my father mentioned something about black magic and how I should use my powers now that I am a witch," she commented in a lower, sad voice. "Not because they are capable of torturing me means that I must follow in their footsteps," she mentioned with great reproach, she wanted to know the reason why they couldn't understand that.
Lily didn't know what to say to her friend, she just watched Severus looking for the boy to say something.
"They're going to force you to join them," the boy said seriously.
"What do you mean? They can't force me to be something I don't want to be," the girl replied.
"They're going to make you a Death Eater, whatever the cost," the boy said sadly.
The tears came back with that comment. Lily turned to see Severus angrily, the girl was waiting for him to say something to make her friend feel better, not to make her cry even more.
"What will happen if I refuse?" Calynn was quite angry, she knew she had the right to decide her fate. "I can't be a Death Eater, I'm just not that kind of person," she ended up crying even louder, but waiting for the child's response.
The boy did not know very well how to answer that question, he could answer with mercy and trying to comfort his friend; or he could answer with all the truth. In the end he decided on the second option.
"They..." He paused to try to remove that hoarse voice, "will kill you, maybe not your parents; I do not know," Deep down, the boy knew that any Death Eater was able to kill his own children, but he didn't want to scare her anymore, he didn't want to show her how far these people can go wrong; "but the followers of the Dark Lord will do it, they are sure they will not hesitate," he continued. "To refuse that group is to be a blood traitor, for them, especially when you come from a family with a line of pure blood," he finished, generating another silence between the three children.
Little Black had grown tired of listening to each of the things that could happen in the future, she had never wanted that. What should she do? Kill or be killed? Was it fair to her? Just then she wishes she had another family, even a family that had no magic, because all she had learned from this was that it is very dangerous and harmful.
"What should I do? "Calynn expressed her thoughts with her friends. She needed advice." She always imagined that in situations like this she would be asking for this kind of advice from her mother and not escaping from her.
It was obvious that this question had caused the same in her friends. It was such a difficult decision to decide at that time, the good was going to end with something evil and vice versa, where is the morality in these situations? It was too great a value judgment.
"Maybe you can live with me," the redhead said as she shrugged, it was clear that she didn't believe that idea. And it was understandable, she knew that this solution would put her and her whole family at risk.
"No, Lily," he replied, to the redhead's surprise, Severus. "Your sister is not going to give her bed for so long," he began. "But the most important thing is that, when her parents look for her, the first houses they would look for would be yours, mine or Thana's, we would only be risking unnecessary lives," he said. "Your parents will always know that you are with any of us"
Calynn agreed with what the boy had said, she didn't want any of her friends to risk his life for her. They were her parents, they were her problems, it was her life. However, she could not help getting the idea of returning to her home after having refused all her orders, in addition to having fled.
"I am a coward," she said. "That's what I am, my mother told me, I'm a coward," the girl exclaimed and then sighed with some anger at herself.
"Don't say that, Calynn," the redhead said politely. She did not like her friend to be treated that way when everything that was happening was not her fault.
"Yes, I am, Lily!" She shouted louder than she would have liked. "I should have defended myself, rebelled, at least made them see that I have dignity," she commented. "But I let them torture me to their liking, to take advantage of my innocence," The girl just lost herself in her thoughts, she had a few memories of her childhood, although she also wondered why she had so few memories.
"No, I think the same as Lily," Severus began. "You wouldn't have been brave to reveal yourself, but you would have been a fool, maybe you would already be dead," the boy commented. You only had two options; stay there and accept all their orders and act against your will and join them," he said, "or run away and refuse everything they told you," he said. "In my opinion, I think you have chosen the best option."
The girl thought a little about the boy's words, he was quite right about that. She didn't have a wand, she didn't know how to do any spells, she didn't have any weapons to really do any harm to her parents. She knew she couldn't pretend to be someone who really wasn't when she knew that meant harming others.
"You're right," she said, "but I don't want to go back." Calynn continued to cry, deep in thought, trying to find a solution to not return home. What would she do alone without money, without a home, without friends? Deep down she knew she would have no choice, she knew she would have to go back to her parents as if nothing had happened, making empty promises, showing false smiles. Maybe all of that could do it, but she was sure that she would not be able to kill someone else, to harm others, to go against her principles.
There was a moment of silence between the three friends. Lily and Severus looked at her with a gesture of concern, they knew they shouldn't get into those serious problems, they knew they shouldn't put their family or even their lives at risk, they knew they weren't their problems and they shouldn't look for because of someone else's fault; but that someone was not anyone, she was their friend. After a long while, the redhead took a deep breath and took courage to speak.
"Maybe, you can spend only tonight in my house," she commented almost in a whisper, avoiding demonstrating how nervous she was in this situation. She was afraid, she didn't know how she was going to explain what had just happened to her mother, she had to think about all the consequences this could have on her family or herself. In addition, the girl had in mind that her friend would stay forever, but she would not say it because she knew that her friend's response would be flatly negative. Severus turned his gaze to the redhead, as if he suspected his true plans, apparently the boy was also afraid of what could happen when doing that favor to Calynn, although he could also understand that the fault Lily would charge if she had not offered her Lily's home would be really big. "It will be only one night, I promise," Lily commented again at the suspicious gestures of Severus, she didn't want he to say anything she really intended to do.
Calynn only watched her friend as a tear began to run down her cheek. She was more than grateful; she was too happy to express it. She was afraid of what might happen, but she didn't want to prove it to Lily.
The girl smiled slightly while hugging the redhead, the hug lasted much longer than expected, she knew she needed someone to comfort her, to tell her that everything would be fine and that was one of the moments when she felt safe after of that dangerous situation.
"Thank you," It was the only thing the little girl could say while smiling and separating from her friend to get up from the grass and start walking at a fast pace towards Lily's house.
