Chapter 42: Date
Brielle's P.O.V.
I stood there, phone glued to my ear. "What do you mean, he might leave?"
"Well," Mum said, sounding apologetic, "He doesn't exactly have a good track record of staying in one place for more than a year."
"He did though," I argued. "He stayed with you and James for four years."
"That was the longest," Mum replied. "He hasn't changed. People don't change, Brielle. They're still the same, bitter, spoiled, brat of a person they've ever been."
"Are we still talking about Dad here?" I asked angrily. "Because it sounds like you're describing me. Like I'm bitter because you accuse me and you think you're right, and I'm spoiled because I have a famous boyfriend, and that I'm a brat all around. Well Mum, thanks. I really appreciate you taking the time to call me to tell me that I'm going to get left behind again. I really needed it. Thanks."
I hung up and felt like chucking my phone across the room. Unfortunately, I can't afford a new one, so I flopped on the bed near me and screamed into a pillow. Niall came in the room to investigate the noise. When he saw me on the bed he flopped down next to me, making me bounce.
"Whatcha doing?" he asked.
"Bemoaning my pathetic parents," I mumbled into the pillow.
"I know what will make you feel better," Niall said his lips on my neck.
I pushed him away and rolled over on my back. "No, I'm not in the mood."
Niall pouted, but pulled me into his side. "We could always do something else," he said.
"Like what?" I asked, resting my head on his chest.
"Like...... go for a walk," Niall said, his eyes lighting up.
I grinned at him. "Let's go."
We jumped out of bed and quickly got dressed, Niall pulling on jeans and a white T-shirt and a hoodie and me in leggings and Toms with a baggy sweatshirt pulled over it. I didn't put on any makeup and Niall eyes shone when he noticed I wasn't.
"You know I love it when you don't wear that crap," he muttered, pressing a kiss to my forehead.
"Yeah, yeah," I said. "You and your noble girl-looks-perfect-completely-natural thing."
Niall gave a little half smile and he wrapped his arm around my waist. "What are you talking about? I have no idea about this theory of yours."
"Shut up," I told him, laughing as I pushed him off.
I walked out the door Niall trailing after me. His keys jangled in his hand as he locked the door and turned to face me, a bright smile on his face. We walked down the street hand in hand, skipping slightly.
I laughed at a joke that Niall had just told, throwing my head back. I caught sight of an ice cream shop and ran over to the window, pressing my nose against the glass and staring in at the ice cream. Niall joined me, pressing his nose against the window too.
"What are we doing?" he asked.
"Can we get ice cream?" I begged. "Please?"
I gave him my puppy dog eyes and Niall grunted. "Alright, we can get some."
I smiled in happiness and pecked him on the cheek before skipping inside. "You're the best boyfriend ever."
"For future reference, I'm buying ice cream for us because I'm hungry, not because I wanted to make you happy," Niall joked as we waited in line.
I gasped in mock-shock. "But Mr. Horan, I thought you were a hopeless romantic!"
"That's Liam," Niall corrected and we burst out laughing.
Five minutes later, we walked out licking ice cream cones, vanilla for him and chocolate for me. We were holding hands and the ice cream was so good.
"Let's go to the park!" Niall said suddenly, pulling me into a park full of families and dogs and a playground.
I let go of his hand and ran around for a little bit, spreading my arms out like an airplane. When I stopped, Niall was watching me, a little smile on his face and his eyes were sparkling.
"What?" I asked him, panting a little from my short run.
"You're just too adorable," he said.
I blushed and stepped closer to him, licking my ice cream. His arm automatically went around my waist and we stood there in the park for a while, just eating our ice cream.
"You got a little something there," Niall said suddenly, pointing to my nose.
"Where?" I asked, patting at it.
"There," Niall said, putting his ice cream against my nose.
I gasped at the cold and licked at my nose, trying to get the ice cream off. When I couldn't, I pouted at Niall.
"That was so cliché and I can't believe I fell for it," I said. "And I would do it back, but I want my ice cream."
Niall laughed and we went over to a park bench and sat down, eating and talking. We laughed and shared our cones and I felt like Niall was just a guy for a couple minutes. I mean, he was just a guy, but he happened to be known by people all over the world. Now, it felt like he was just mine, all mine and I didn't have to share him with anyone.
Niall got up and stretched and I stood up with him. When he turned to face me, I kissed him. Catching Niall by surprise, he almost sat down again but caught himself and kissed me back. He tasted like vanilla ice cream and his body radiated heat. We broke apart but we still were close to one another.
"What was that for?" Niall mumbled.
"I love you," I breathed, not wanting to move.
"I love you more," he replied, smiling a little.
"I love you most," I countered, my face breaking out in a smile.
"I love you more than- slides!" Niall exclaimed, running off to the playground.
I shook my head, laughing at my silly boyfriend before trotting off after him. When I finally reached the playground, Niall had already climbed to the top and was watching everyone in the park. I clambered up to join him and we sat up there for a second, enjoying the sight of the children playing.
I shivered, wrapping my arms closer around me, trying not to let Niall notice. Of course he did, and in a second he removed his hoodie and wrapped it around me, leaving him in only his T-shirt.
I protested. "No Niall, you'll get cold."
"Nah, I'm fine," he smiled at me. "You need to be warm."
"Let's climb down," I said. "It's cold up here."
That's how we found ourselves hogging a slide, a small one no one seemed to care about. The kids were leaving us alone, and we lay on the bottom on each side, as there was a chunk of plastic separating us. Our lips were barely brushing each others' as we talked about nothing, our day, music, anything. It was one of the best memories I had with Niall.
Eventually, the sun set and we had to go home. After watching the sunset, Niall wrapped an arm around me and we started walking home when I realized that we were near my dad's place.
"Niall, can we go visit my dad real quick?" I asked.
"Sure babe," Niall said.
We walked up to his flat, which I had helped him pick out. The lights were on in the living room, so I knew that he was home. I knocked on the door and stepped back, waiting for him to come.
I heard a voice cursing and a thud, which made me think that he tripped. Dad opened the door, looking around. When he saw me, he seemed to relax a little.
"Brielle," he said. "What are you doing here?"
"I wanted to talk to you since we didn't today," I said. "And me and Niall were in the area, so we decided to drop by."
"Well, you dropped by, you can go home now," Dad said, almost pushing me off the step.
"Well, can we talk a little longer?" I asked, not budging. "Maybe some coffee, or something-"
"No!" Dad said quickly and loudly, making me look at him quizzically. "I mean, I have some friends over."
"Oh, can I meet them?" I asked.
"No, Brielle, just, God, go home," he snapped, getting testy.
I took a step back, blinking hard. Dad seemed to soften. "Look, Brielle, I'm sorry," he said, stepping closer.
I caught a whiff of smoke coming off of him. Since when did he smoke? And it wasn't just regular cigarette smoke either.
"Dad-" I began but he stepped backwards, into his flat.
"Just call me tomorrow, okay?" he asked, already easing the door shut.
"Wait Dad-" I said, but the door was already shut in my face.
