Chapter 38: Back Again
Brielle's P.O.V.
I smiled and looked up at my dad, who was waiting for me.
"Ready?" he asked.
"For what?" I answered.
"Celebratory dinner!" he cheered.
I laughed. "Yeah, let's go."
In ten minutes flat, we were in a restaurant of my choice- Applebee's. We were sitting at our table, after just having ordered. My dad was laughing at a joke I just said before he paused.
"What happened in court today?" he asked.
"What?" I asked, confused.
"What was going on with you and Niall?" he asked a little smirk on his face.
I felt my face grow hot. Seriously, I've known my father for a week and he's already bombarding me with questions about boys.
"Nothing," I said.
My dad shook his head. "No, there was something going on. The way you two were looking at each other," he shook his head.
"How were we looking at each other?" I asked, almost desperately.
"Niall was looking at you as if he needed you to believe him or he'd burst into flames," my dad said. "And you were staring at him like he was the solution to all of your problems."
I blushed a little more. "Dad, he's the cause of most of my problems." I waited for him to answer then realized he was staring at me. "What?" I asked, looking down at myself, wondering if I had food on my face.
"You just called me Dad," he whispered.
Ohhhhh, right, I thought. He thought I hated him because he left.
"Well, you are my father, right?" I teased.
Dad smiled. "Yup, that's me."
We chatted over dinner then he had to go. Where, he didn't say. He just gave me a hug and walked out of the restaurant, congratulating me one more time on my victory and waved as he left. It's not like I minded; I actually wanted some alone time.
I got up and left the restaurant, tipping the waitress. Having worked as one a couple times, I knew how important tips were. As I walked outside, I realized that it was raining.
"Great," I muttered, shoving my hands in my pockets and walking across the parking lot, head down.
I peered in front of me, scanning for cars. I saw an opening and darted across the street, managing to get under a shop awning. I paused for a second, shaking the water out of my hair. I decided to wait there for a while, to see if the rain would let up a little.
After about ten minutes, there was no chance of the rain stopping. I sighed and stepped out into the rain, hoping to get to Addie's soon. I walked along the edge of the street, trying to avoid getting splashed by cars. After a couple of minutes, I was soaked to the bone.
"Some great victory party," I said aloud, laughing.
I noticed someone on the other side of the road; walking in the same direction I was only they were weaving back and forth. Probably drunk. I snorted as they almost tripped. I found myself slowing down to watch them.
They managed to get pretty far, considering how much they were weaving all over the place. Suddenly, they stepped in the street and under a streetlight, and I realized that I knew who it was.
It was Niall and he was drunk. And I mean drunk. Like giggly, weaving, falling, pissed drunk. A car was coming toward him and all he did was keep walking, well, staggering, really. I realized that he wasn't going to move and that the car either wasn't going to stop or the driver didn't see him.
"Niall," I called, trying to get his attention.
The car got closer, and Niall kept walking.
"Niall," I yelled, waving my arms.
The car was getting really close now.
"Niall!" I screamed, bolting from my vantage point and running towards him.
He turned towards my voice and the car was almost about to hit us. I tackled him and we flew out of the street and landed in the grass, safe from the car. The car only kept driving, not even slowing down.
"Idiot!" I yelled after it. "Watch where you're going!"
I heard Niall groaning and I turned to face him. He was lying on his back, soaked to the skin, rolling around moaning.
"Oh my God," I said aloud.
Niall groaned, bringing a hand to his head. Just once he did that I noticed a huge bump on his head and something wet running down his face and it wasn't rain.
"Oh my God, Niall," I said again, bringing a hand to my mouth.
"Brielle?" he said, squinting in the rain.
"You almost died," I said, still in shock.
"Brielle," Niall said, trying to sit up.
"You almost got hit by a car," I said; as if I kept repeating the words they would suddenly make sense.
Niall touched the bump on his head and flopped back down, groaning in pain.
"Oh my God," I whispered, covering my face with my hands. I was crying. "Oh my God, if you would have left me, I don't know what I would have done with myself. I love you."
Niall moaned again, his eyes fluttering shut.
"I love you," I repeated like a mantra. "I love you, Niall, God I love you so much just please be okay, you can't leave me."
"Brielle, I'm fine," Niall said, sobering up.
I tackled him in a hug, making him fall backwards. I buried my face in his shirt, arms around him tight.
"Don't ever scare me like that again," I said, my voice muffled by his shirt.
Niall laughed and stroked my hair. "I won't," he promised.
There was a slightly awkward pause as I remained in his arms for a second before pulling away.
"That was so scary," I said quietly.
"I know," he said back, equally as quiet.
"You almost died," I said.
"I know," Niall repeated.
"What were you even doing?" I asked, looking up at him.
Niall flushed a little, fiddling with his fingers. "I was upset after the trial and I got drunk."
"Why?" I asked.
"It's the only way I can stop thinking about you," he explained. "The alcohol takes me away from you."
It was my turn to be embarrassed. I looked down. "I love you," I said quietly.
I felt Niall freeze near me. I looked up at him and saw his expression. It was a mix of something like longing and apprehension.
"Are you only saying that because I almost just died?" he asked.
I shook my head. "No, Niall, I've always loved you. You almost dying just made me realize how much."
"How much?" Niall whispered, as if he was afraid of asking.
"A lot," I said, looking up. Raindrops fell onto my face. "I need you, Niall," I said, admitting the thought that was always at the back of my mind.
I kept denying to Addie and to my dad that I missed Niall. I claimed that he was evil and no good and I was better off without him. My subconscious was always there whispering to me that I was wrong, that I really loved him and that I missed him a lot. More than I should have, actually.
Niall smiled a little, the rain matting his hair to his scalp. "I need you too," he said.
Almost simultaneously, we leaned in and kissed. Niall pulled me a little closer and I shifted. He was warm even though he was soaked. His lips were wet, and so was his face, but then again, so was mine.
I had finally gotten my perfect kiss in the rain.
Niall pulled away and asked, "Just so we're clear, you are my girlfriend again, right?"
I laughed, kissing him again. "Of course, you silly leprechaun."
We sat there in the rain, kissing, finally back where we belonged. Me in Niall's arms and Niall holding me tight, refusing to let me go again, for fear that I wouldn't come back again.
But I would always come back. After all, he was mine and I was his, for forever and even farther.
