After walking Wonyoung to the bus stop, Jun-seo went back to his apartment and joined Jake on the dining table again while Jungwon was still in the kitchen, cooking away. Fifteen minutes later, he entered the dining room and served breakfast for everyone.
"Thanks for the meal," they said in unison before digging into the fried rice that Jungwon cooked. The breakfast was quiet, as it always was in the shared apartment.
Once they were done with breakfast, they went back to minding their own businesses. Jungwon was in his room, getting ready to start the day, Jake was in the living room, playing video games, and Jun-seo was doing the dishes.
While doing the dishes, Jun-seo's mind went back to the conversation with Wonyoung earlier. He stopped scrubbing the pan and sighed, staring at the wall for a while. It would've been the perfect time to talk about his feelings earlier, to tell Wonyoung that he wanted to give their relationship a chance again if possible, but then, realization hit him.
Wonyoung probably wouldn't want that. They had ended the relationship on mutual terms, and they agreed to stay friends, never more than that. It was true that a part of Jun-seo had moved on, but he didn't know if that was just his mind playing tricks on him.
What would've happened if he told her that he still has feelings for her?
Jun-seo was so deep in thought that he didn't even notice Jungwon entering the kitchen. Noticing his friend's expression, Jungwon chuckled as he filled his water bottle at the water dispenser, "why the long face?" he asked.
Snapping out of his thoughts, Jun-seo blinked a few times before looking at Jungwon. "Ah, it's nothing... I was just... thinking about our upcoming results," he lied and flashed a small smile at him.
Jungwon's brows furrowed, "results... results... right, we are getting our exam result today," he exclaimed. "Well, let's hope for the best for all of us," he added with a shrug before putting his water bottle in his backpack and walking toward the hallway.
"Are you going somewhere?" asked Jun-seo, his eyes following him as Jungwon walked out of the kitchen.
"I'm going to the campus for a meeting," he explained, looking at his watch before then looking at Jun-seo with a smile. "I am one of the staff for the freshmen welcoming week," he explained and slipped his backpack on his shoulder.
Jungwon hummed and waved at him, "see you guys later!"
Meanwhile, Jake looked over from the living room, "hey, drop by the convenience store and get me some snacks when you get back from the meeting, okay?" he requested.
Jungwon peeked his head from the archway and gave him a thumbs up, "will do!"
"Alright, I'm really leaving now!" announced Jungwon as he walked toward the front door, finally leaving the house.
—
After Jungwon left, Jun-seo resumed his washing duty, making sure every single plate was spotless before putting them away in the rack. He looked at the time, 8:00 a.m.. The results were supposed to be out now.
Jun-seo wiped his hands with the hand towel and entered the living room, sitting on the armchair before taking his phone out of his pocket, logging into his university's website to check his final result.
As he waited for the result, refreshing the page over and over again, Jun-seo's brows furrowed as it took too long to load. Jake, noticing the look on his friend's face, cleared his throat. "What's wrong?" he asked while pressing away on the controller.
"It's the uni's website... it's not loading my results," answered Jun-seo.
Jake raised an eyebrow and paused his game, "is it today?" he muttered before taking his phone out, logging into his student account as well. He pressed the 'check result' button and snickered, "huh, it works for me," he said before showing the screen to Jun-seo.
Jun-seo took a double take on Jake's words and looked up from his phone, "that's unfair," he whined quietly as Jake looked at his results.
"Huh, would you look at that? It's an improvement from my previous result," mused Jake, looking at his result.
"What did you get?" asked Jun-seo, placing his phone aside on the end table before pushing himself up, settling down beside Jake afterward as he looked at his result.
Jake panned the screen toward Jun-seo, giving him a better view. "3.45," he said.
It was, indeed, an improvement to Jake's previous result where he got 3.15 out of 4.00. Jun-seo smiled and raised his hand, "way to go, dude!" he cheered, waiting for Jake to give him a high-five.
"Yeah, man!" replied Jake as he high-fived with Jun-seo, "this calls for a celebration!" he added jokingly, earning a soft laughter from the latter.
After a while, Jake cleared his throat and looked at him, "what about you? I think the result should be loaded now," he said and looked at the phone on the end table. Jun-seo nodded and got up with a grunt, walking toward the armchair again before sitting down, grabbing his phone from the table with the hope that his result was loaded.
Jun-seo didn't say anything as he stared at his phone screen, and Jake raised an eyebrow, "so..." he leaned closer to his friend. "Is it out yet, Jun?"
"No, but someone else got my result," replied Jun-seo before showing his screen to Jake. It was a message from Wonyoung with a screenshot of Jun-seo's result and a congratulatory message with it.
Jake squinted his eyes as he focused on the screenshot, muttering the number that he saw, "3.75..." his eyes widened, looking at Jun-seo with a huge smile. "Talk about improvements!" He cheered and punched his friend's shoulder.
Leaning against his seat, Jun-seo smiled and stared at his result. He couldn't believe it—his struggles and hard work actually paid off. He started the semester with a 'it is what it is' mindset, and at some point, he was so close to giving up, but it turned out to be better than his expectations.
Jun-seo cleared his throat and sent a thank you text to Wonyoung followed by a dancing Pocoyo sticker. He quickly forwarded his result to his mother and put his phone on the end table again, grabbing the other controller from the coffee table.
"Well, I guess I can relax now that I got my result," said Jun-seo, sighing in relief.
For the past four weeks of his semester break, Jun-seo has been thinking about his result nonstop. He was convinced that this would be the semester where he finally failed or at least dropped below the 3.00 pointer, but now that he got his result, and it was even better than he had imagined, he was overjoyed.
But of course, being Jun-seo, he didn't show it, or at least express it as much as he let other people see.
—
That afternoon, Jun-seo showered again and got ready for work. He put his uniform on and did his hair—not like he needed to do much work with it, simply tying it into a man bun before heading out of his room.
"I'm off to work," announced Jun-seo, walking past the living room where Jake was FaceTiming his parents. Jake looked over his shoulder briefly before flipping the camera and panning it toward his friend. He gestured for Jun-seo to wave, and he did.
After talking for a bit with Jake's parents, Jun-seo finally left for work. The store he was working at was only a few blocks down the street, so it didn't take him too long to get there. He entered through the backdoor and saw some of his coworkers chilling in the staff office.
One of them, a girl with dyed red hair, looked at him and smiled. "Hi, Jun-seo!" She greeted him happily.
"Hey, Yi-zhuo," Jun-seo returned the greeting and entered the store where another one of his coworkers was manning the counter. He cleared his throat and fixed his uniform before approaching the counter.
Jun-seo hummed and placed a hand on his coworker's shoulder, "I will take it from here," he said to him with a smile before taking his place. "Go and get some rest in the office with the others," he told him.
His coworker thanked him and within a matter of seconds, he disappeared into the staff office. Jun-seo watched him until he was out of sight before turning to look at the next customer in line. "Hey, how can I help you?"
The customer smiled and placed her basket on the counter. Jun-seo looked at it and nodded, "having a party tonight?" he asked as he started scanning the snacks and drinks.
"Oh, no... I am just stocking up for the next two weeks," said the customer before tilting her head, her brows furrowing as she studied Jun-seo's face. "Wait... you looked... familiar," she pointed out and continued to study his face.
Jun-seo nodded as he continued to scan the stuff inside the basket, "yeah? I get that often," he replied with a small smile.
"No, like... I've seen you before..." the customer shook her head and thought for a while, finally snapping her fingers as she recalled where she had seen Jun-seo before. "Ah, right, you were the one who was manning the counter last night, weren't you?"
As Jun-seo heard the customer, he stopped scanning for a while and peeked over her, making sure that no other customers were in line before looking at her. "Um... I'm sorry, I don't..."
"Oh, right," the customer said with a smile and covered her mouth with her hand, imitating a facemask. "Do you remember now?"
Jun-seo raised his eyebrows and his smile grew a little bigger, "oh, right! You were the one who bought some medicine... for a headache, was it?" He asked, his brows furrowing as he tried to recall.
The customer nodded, "yup, that's right," she confirmed and looked at the stuff that was still in her basket, "oh, sorry, I um... I didn't mean to distract you," she said while awkwardly pointing at the basket.
"Oh, no, it's fine," Jun-seo reassured before resuming his work. After a while, he looked at the total and smiled at her. "$72.22," he said.
"Just a moment..." the customer mumbled before reaching for her purse and pulling out a credit card, handing it to Jun-seo.
After paying for her stuff, Jun-seo put them in plastic bags and cleared his throat, "do you need a hand with these bags?" he asked, and the customer looked at him, shaking her head while smiling softly.
"It's okay... I don't want to bother you," she replied and looked behind her where a few customers were waiting in line. "Besides, I think you have your hands full at the moment," she pointed out and carried the bags at once, bowing to Jun-seo before finally leaving the store.
As the next customer walked up to the counter, he looked at the floor and picked something up, "I think the last customer dropped this," he informed Jun-seo while holding a driver's license.
"Oh no..." muttered Jun-seo, looking at the license, and then at the customer who was walking toward a car, placing the bags on the ground before reaching for the key in her purse.
"It's okay. You can hand this to her first. I don't mind waiting," the customer reassured, and Jun-seo looked at him, nodding before taking the card and thanking him.
He stepped out of the store and cleared his throat, "excuse me, miss!" called Jun-seo as he approached the girl.
The girl hummed in response and turned on her heels to look at Jun-seo, a small smile on her face. "Oh, hey, can I help you?" she asked, watching him getting closer.
Jun-seo smiled and handed the license to the girl, "you dropped this at the store," he explained and the girl's face turned red from embarrassment, raising her eyebrows.
"Oh, I did, huh?" she muttered, taking the card from Jun-seo's hand. "Thank you for letting me know," she said and took her purse out, opening it to put the driver's license inside, but before she could do that, a man ran past them, snatching the purse.
"Oh, for Pete's sake," whined Jun-seo before looking at the girl, who was too stunned to move or speak as she stared at her hand that was previously holding the driver's license. "Stay here, I will get it for you," advised Jun-seo before running after the thief.
"Thank... you..." replied the girl, still stunned from what just happened.
