The Final Task

Tonight was the Third and final task of the Triwizard Tournament, the last chance for whoever had entered Harry's name in the goblet of fire, to kill him.

Harry glanced back nervously towards Sirius as he waited for his turn to enter the maze. Sirius sent him an enthusiastic thumbs up and some of Harry's nerves calmed down. He smiled back at his godfather before returning his gaze to the maze.

He'd be fine. He had prepared well for the task, and he didn't have to win. One way or the other, this nightmare would be over.

Atleast, he hadn't had to deal with actual nightmares last night. Any lingering guilt he had with accepting Louise's offer if removing his scar, had vanished when Harry had woken up after a full night of sleep. He didn't know why Sirius couldn't move on from his issue with Aries' parents, but Louise had no dark connections. Even the method she had used to remove his scar was similar to muggle surgery, if she hadn't used the healing potions. So, no, Harry had no problem doing as Louise had asked and keep it from Sirius.

The canon blew for the third time, after Aries and Cedric had already went in, signalling Louise's turn to enter. She looked unusually pale.

"Good luck." Harry called out as she stepped forwards.  She turned around to offer him small smile before the hedge grew over the doorway to the maze.

Ten minutes later, Harry entered the maze. The cacophony of sounds from the stands was cut off as soon as the doorway was sealed off. The eerie silence didn't help his nervousness at all.

'It'll be fine. The others entered way before. They'd be getting to the cup anytime.'

But they didn't. Time passed, Harry walked further and further into the maze, crossing obstacles, but no signal of the task being over came. In fact, Harry reached the centre of the maze, where a platform was erected, obviously for the Triwizard cup, but there was no cup present.

Harry turned around at hearing footsteps, only to see that Cedric coming towards him. Before they could say anything, the hedge started to move, making a straight passage from their location towards the stands. Harry and Cedric shared a glance, and started walking. Somebody has won, either Louise or Aries, but it wasn't a Hogwarts victory. Somehow, Harry didn't feel very bad about that.

They were joined by Louise, leading them to the conclusion of Aries' victory, further along the path. Though, they were surprised to see her levitating a bound and gagged Professor Moody along with her.

"He tried to use the Imperius curse on me." She explained, seeing their bewildered expressions.

Professor Moody? Wasn't he a dark wizard catcher? Why would he attack Louise, especially using an unforgivable curse?

"Is he secure?" Cedric asked, keeping his wand ready.

"Yeah. I've taken his wands and portkeys, summoned them." She told them. "Let's just get him to the authorities."

Harry followed them as they quickened their pace. They exited the maze to see the minister of magic giving a speech declaring Aries the winner of the tournament. Aries was standing next to him, looking uncomfortable.

"Harry, could you take over Moody?" Louise asked urgently, and rushed off to the stage towards Aries, without waiting for the answer.

Professor Moody lurched downwards before Harry quickly pointed his wand at him, hoping to prevent him from hitting the floor. He didn't even have time to speak the words 'wingardium leviosa', but somehow the spell managed to worked without it.

Harry didn't have marvel at his supposed magical miracle as Fudge abandoned his speech, noticing Moody and his tied up condition.

"What is the meaning of this? Why is a former Auror being restrained this way?" He asked as he walked down the stage to their little group. Aries and Louise followed him. Harry noticed Dumbledore coming over from the other side of stage.

Fudge's questions were directed at Harry due to the fact that he was levitating Moody at that moment. "He attacked Louise." He answered.

"That's preposterous. He is a well known...." Fudge sputtered.

"Are you calling my wife a liar, Minister Fudge?" Aries interupted, as him and Louise reached them, holding hands.

"What?...No, Aries, of course not, there must have been a misunder...... Oh my god, what is happening to him?"

Something was indeed happening to Professor Moody. Something that Harry recognised very well, from personal experience, as the effect of Polyjuice potion. Since he wouldn't have been able to drink the potion while he was tied up in front of them, he must be turning back into his real body.

It was gruesome to watch. Before Harry's eyes, his face was changing. The scars were disappearing, the skin was become smoother, the mangled nose became whole. With a loud clunk, the wooden leg fell away and a normal one took its place. The magical eye popped out and a real one replaced it.

"Impossible. That's Barty Crouch Junior. He's supposed to be dead." Fudge said, sounding horrified.

"He was a death eater, wasn't he?" Louise asked. "He must have been the one that put Harry's name in the goblet, in order to get him killed during the tournament, to get revenge for his master."

"He was sentenced a lifetime in Azkaban, though, with my parents and uncle." Aries said, with the question evident in his voice.

"He died long before I was the minister." Fudge bumbled. "It must have been Barty Crouch. He got his son out of Azkaban, and now he's on the run from criminal charges of negligence in Black's case. He will be harshly punished when he's caught."

"He won't be caught." Crouch Junior rasped.

"What was that?" The Minister rounded on him. "Of course, he'll be caught. He won't escape the ministry for long."

"He won't be caught because he's dead. He's buried right besides Hagrid's pumpkin patch if you want to find the bone I transfigured his body into." Crouch replied.

A horrified silence descended upon the group.

"Perhaps we should take this into private." Professor Dumbledore suggested, gesturing towards the crowd in the stands.

"Right you are, Dumbledore, right you are. Dawlish, secure the prisoner. We'll take this to your office, Dumbledore." Fudge agreed.

"I'd like to stay, too, Minister. As the injured party." Louise piped in, looking no more injured than she did entering the maze.

"Of course, Miss Dela.... Mrs Lestrange, sorry. Come along, now."

Aries, Cedric and Harry were left behind in front of a curious crowd.

"Come on, let's get out of here." Aries said, directing them towards the exit. They quickly sneaked away, avoiding Madame Maxime and Karkaroff. Harry quickly realised that they were moving in the direction of the Hagrid's hut.

"Are we going to dig out Mr Crouch's body?" Harry asked.

Aries snorted. "No, that would be tampering with evidence. We're here to hide until the crowd thins out."

"Aren't you worried about Louise? She said that Crouch used the Imperius on her." Cedric asked.

"And she was strong enough to break out of it." Aries shrugged. "The danger has passed. Now she's off to do the thing she's best at- politics and embarrassing Dumbledore."

Cedric frowned at that. "How is she going to embarrass Dumbledore?"

"Moody is supposed to be his friend. It's embarrassing that he wasn't able to spot that he had been replaced, atleast since October, if he was the one that put your name in." Aries nodded at Harry. "I'm pretty sure that she's also going to get the results of the tournament declared void.

"What? On what grounds?" Cedric questioned, stunned.

"Sabotage. Crouch has been sabotaging the tournament since the beginning as Moody. Who's to say he didn't in the final task?"

"But you won." Harry protested. "Why would Louise contest your win? She said wasn't in the tournament to win."

"If you remember I had said the same thing. Louise knows winning doesn't matter to me. Besides, Crouch was connected to my parents. My win would come under scrutiny anyway. Louise would just spin it in way that will be most embarrassing for her arch nemesis."

"Her arch nemesis?" Cedric asked.

"Dumbledore." Harry guessed. "Why does she dislike Dumbledore so much?"

"She's wanted to become the grand sorceress of the ICW since she came out of diapers. Dumbledore has pretty much made a mockery of the position since he became the grand sorcerer, six years ago."

"That made him her arch rival?" Cedric said, incredulously.

"Isn't that a bit of an overreaction?" Harry asked.

Aries regarded both of them, gravelly. "I would advise you to not say that in front of her. She takes her grudge against Dumbledore quite seriously. In fact, don't mention this discussion, at all."

Harry quickly nodded, along with Cedric. Both of them were aware that Louise could be quite scary.
