Pandemonium
Despite the sun setting over the horizon, a heavy heat still lingered within the air. Summer was in full swing with blossomed flowers, buzzing bees, and young love flourishing through the air. However, that wasn't all that had been floating through the air. One could feel the zip of magic tingling across one's skin as they roamed the local streets. It was everywhere, only seeming to heighten the closer to Litha it seemed to get. Though, despite the excitement and celebratory atmosphere growing that evening, not everyone seemed enthused about the festivities.
With long hair of ebony and eyes the color of the night sky, Sana Farron was the epitome of what it meant to be a walking beauty. Her strides were carefully placed as she meandered through the loud festival grounds, appearing as if she were no more than floating across the soft green grass under her feet. The navy blue skirt she wore was long and flowy, covering her feet to enhance the illusion of her floating. It had been paired with simple brown flats and a white off the shoulder top made of light cotton fabric. She was the picture of elegance, but her eyes told a different tale. One of boredom and sadness mingled within their midnight depths, eluding to the lack of joy that should have been there instead.
In the days leading up to Litha, Sana's mother had passed away from illness and the man she was to wed. . . well, she had found him in the arms of another woman. So, no one could blame her for the dull mood she was currently in. All she wanted was the night to be over so she could return to the peace and quiet, secluded within her tiny cottage home.
Sana made her way over to a wooden table seemingly void of any human presence, the past occupants having left their plates of food for the bugs and any animals that may have come their way. She sat down on the matching wooden chair, her dark gaze drifting to the multitude of people gathered around the bonfires. Songs were sung as people danced merrily around the raging flicker of the flames. Laughter and smiles mixed with that of languid conversations, rumors, and simple gossip about the fellow communion of witches and wizards around them.
She wouldn't have been surprised if she had become part of the gossip dripping from word of mouth that night. Sana knew there was plenty there to gossip about.
Sana dear. . . come join us by the bonfire! You're missing all the fun!"
Sana's attention shifted from the bonfire festivities to the woman standing before her.
A smile that rivaled the brightness of the sun and eyes of sky blue, they had to be a gift from the goddess herself. Chestnut brown hair flowed down the woman's back in waves, dotted in color by the wildflowers that adorned the thick locks. She was a bundle of energy, bursting with each bouncing step she took and every excitable word that left her pink tinted lips.
Haddie was her name and she had been a friend of the family's since she herself had been very young. Sana knew she was only attempting to distract her from the sorrows and misfortunes plaguing her life at the moment. Only, the attempt had been a failure even before she came over to try and coerce her into the pre-festival activities. It was a miracle anyone was going to last another twenty-four hours after tonight.
"Thank you, Miss Haddie, but I think I'll sit this one out for now."
"Are you sure? There's so much to do, won't you at least come join me for a dance?"
A small smile was forced upon Sana's face, but she nodded to assure her friend that she would rather sit there than dance around the flames.
"I'm certain. I'd like to just sit here for now and watch everything unfold, enjoy the peace as night greets us."
"Alright, if you're certain. I'll come check on you later then."
All Sana could do was continue to smile her reassurance and nod, thankful Haddie wasn't going to press the matter any further. At least not at that moment she wasn't, but she was grateful nonetheless.
Without another word spoken from her dancing friend, Sana watched as Haddie twirled and danced away from her. Haddie reminded her of how her late mother used to be, so full of life and happiness. However, sickness had taken that beautiful person away from not only her, but the entirety of the world. The younger generations would never know the glow of her kind smile, the joy in her sweet voice, nor the enjoyment one gained from tasting her fresh baked goods. All of it was no more than a memory that would eventually die and fade along with those who knew her today.
Sana sighed at the thought and turned her attention once more away from the festival goers to that of the tree lined forest surrounding them. How she wouldn't give anything to just disappear deep within them and vanish from the world that had grown dark around her.
The moment her midnight gaze landed upon the thick line of trees, something emitting a white light had caught her attention. It danced around, flitting back and forth as if it were trying to catch her attention in the first place. Not to her disappointment, the little glowing light had managed to succeed in its task, drawing Sana's attention almost instantly.
Standing from her seat, Sana gave a hesitant glance towards the bonfires to see if anyone else had noticed the sudden glow within the forest. However, when it seemed she had been the only one to see it, she turned away from the festival and looked back towards the forest. Her feet carried her across the festival ground and towards the mysterious light before her common sense could even kick in. Though, she didn't know how much power her common sense would have, seeing that her curiosity seemed to be ever growing with each step she took.
It wasn't difficult to follow, not with nightfall having approached so quickly. Though, the curiosity of anyone else spotting the strange dancing light still lingered in the back of her mind.
The further Sana followed into the forest, the thicker the trees grew around her and the less light the branches allowed below. Even with the white glow leading her, a heavy darkness threatened to consume her. She could barely make out small plants, mushrooms that had been growing for far too long and now emassed the tree trunks.
However, that's when she saw it.
Breathtaking gold and silver vines twirled and wrapped around one another to create an elegant arch underneath the canopy of trees. Stones of heavenly blue, gentle lavender, and flaming ruby were intricately woven into the archway. They sparkled from what little light manage to hit them, but it was the center of the arch that mesmerized her instantly. A swirl of purple and blue galaxies beckoned her to step within.
Hesitancy began to take up residency within her, consuming Sana nearly to the brim if it wasn't for the curiosity that already raged brightly like the bonfires back at the festival. It was as if the woods had heard her plea, giving her an escape from the world she resided in. The archway was a door, her out to a more exciting life where she could recreate herself and no one knew who she was. She would be able to forget about the sadness and heartache that had signified itself with the world she lived in, a tempting proposition that she was all the more happy to take.
Not one to miss out an opportunity of any kind, Sana reached out a hand and stepped into the portal calling out to her.
At first it was like a never ending trail of electricity dancing across her skin, awakening every cell within her body. The world seemed to drop away from her, leaving Sana floating in an endless void. Silence hung in the air and echoed all around her, unable to make up its mind whether to be quiet or loud.
Just when Sana had grown used to the growing silence, light erupted within the shadows around her and the sounds of birds chirping took over the quiet she had grown accustomed to.
Sana hadn't been aware she even closed her eyes until she was standing in place, the gentle breeze hitting her skin, cooling it from the heat of her home.
As Sana slowly allowed her midnight colored eyes to open, they were met by the light of early morning shining in through the windows. Not only that, she no longer stood outside. Instead, she was standing within a grand library that held shelves of endless books. Off white oak rose high within the room, each filled with an array of colorful leather bound books. Books that waited for someone to learn about all their secrets, to listen to all their stories that had yet to be told.
Intrigued by the library she stumbled upon, Sana took her first steps further into the room to go investigate. Her fingers reached out, gently running along the spines of the books to ensure she wasn't actually dreaming. None of this actually made sense, not when it had been nighttime moments prior and she had been outside where festivities for Litha were taking place. When that tingle of energy grasped onto each of her fingertips and danced all the way up her arm, she knew it was no dream, it was real.
However, there was something more behind that energy, something that mingled and merged with it that confused Sana. It was something both familiar and unfamiliar to the young witch, but still held something more all the same. There was only one way she could describe what she was feeling. What she was feeling was undeniably. . .
Human.
How that was remotely possible stumped even her, a gasp left her lips as realization struck her. She yanked her hand back and raised her eyes to the ceiling. It was as if she were being watched. Not in a creepy or bad way, but in a curious way as if watching what she would do with the knowledge she was slowly gaining.
Then she heard it, the sliding of a book on one of the nearby shelves.
Snapping her head in that very direction, Sana eyed the only book that wasn't pushed in evenly beside the others. Carefully she reached out and took the dark emerald leather bound book off its shelf and opened it to the first page. On it, two simple words written in gorgeous calligraphy was printed upon the milky white of the paper. Somehow, she knew something would be there, but at the same time it mystified her.
Flipping through the remainder of the pages, she realized they were all blank. Nothing was written upon them, no smudges or ink spills. They were as white as the day they had been bound within the book itself, which brought her back to page one where those two horrifying words were:
Save Me
Raising her eyes from the book, Sana looked to the ceiling as an understanding of what she had to do quickly took over her. Someone nearby needed her help and she planned to find a way to do so. How she was going to help was a complete mystery to her, one she vowed to figure out. She was given a new purpose in life, something only she could be trusted with given the lack of people around. She couldn't let whoever needed her help down, not when she was the only one shown the way to the library.
"You have my word, I will do my very best to help. I will save you, whoever you are."
