Chapter 3 - Pass or Fail: Survival Test!

One by one, all the squads left with their new sensei's after lunch. By an hour after, Squad 7 still sat in the classroom, wondering when we would meet our sensei. I stood up after waiting another half hour, going towards the door. "Ren, where are you going? Sensei could be here any minute!" Sakura called. I turned my head and gaze over my shoulder, glaring.

"I'm going to the bathroom, is that okay, your highness?" I snap back, annoyed already with her. I scoff and leave the room. After I finish my business, I see Kakashi standing on the side of the classroom door. "Kakashi?" I hum softly, cocking my head. He holds up his finger and shushes me softly. I smirk as I gaze at the eraser wedged between the door and the frame. He grasped the door and stuck his head in, the eraser plopping on his silver locks with a subtle poof.

I could hear Naruto start laughing as Sakura tried to kiss ass. "Hm... how can I put this... my first impression of this group.... You're a bunch of idiots...." Kakashi hummed, making the rest of the squad dead pan.

"Hey, I found him!" I call over, peering in between his body and the door.

~*****~

"Alright, why don't you introduce yourself? One at a time." Kakashi started after we had all sat on the roof top of the school.

"Introduce ourselves? Well, what are we supposed to say?" Sakura asked gently.

I rolled my eyes at her. "Things you like, things you hate. Dreams for the future, hobbies. Things like that."

"Why don't you tell us first, I mean, before we talk, tell us about you so we can see how it's supposed to go!" Naruto asked excitedly.

"Me? I'm Kakashi Hatake. The things I like, the things I hate... I don't really feel like telling you that." He started. "My dreams for the future.... Never really thought about it. As for my hobbies... I have lots of hobbies." He finished. I snorted and covered my lips with my hand.

"That was totally useless! All he really told us was his name!" Sakura said to Naruto.

"Uh, yeah." Naruto agreed.

"Okay, how about you, Ren?" Kakashi jeered, making me glare. I hated going first on these stupid things. He knew that.

"I'm Ren Yukimura. I like a lot of things. I don't like using the word hate, so I don't like a lot of stuff. My dream for the future?" I hummed lightly, wrapping my arms around my knees. "I don't really have one, I guess. I'll think on it later. And my hobbies? I don't really have any, I guess." I smiled slightly and leaned my chin on my knees.

"All we got was her name." Naruto jeered. "And we knew that!"

"Okay. Now you." Kakashi pointedly said to Naruto. "Believe it! I'm Naruto Uzumaki! I like instant ramen in a cup! And I really like the ramen Iruka Sensei bought me at Ichiraku Noodle Shop! But I hate the three minutes you have to wait after pouring water in the ramen cup! My hobby is eating different kinds of ramen and comparing them! And my future dream is to be the greatest Hokage! Then the whole village will have to stop disrespecting me and start treating me like I'm somebody important!" Naruto finished.

"Okay.... next."

"I'm Sakura Haruno! What I like, uh, I mean, the person I like is..." She trailed off, glancing at Sasuke. "Uh, my hobby is..." She trailed off again, once again glancing at Sasuke. "My dream for the future is...." She trailed off one more time before squealing in delight.

We all waited for her to finish. "And? What do you hate?" Kakashi asked, probably wondering what kind of drug she was on.

"Naruto and Ren!" She shouted, glaring daggers at me as I whistled harmlessly besides the heart broken Naruto.

"Alright. Last one."

"My name is Sasuke Uchiha. I hate a lot of things and I only like one person. What I have is not a dream, because I will make it a reality. I'm going to restore my clan, and destroy a certain... someone." Sasuke finished darkly.

I rubbed my arm as shivers flew up my spine. 'Jeez, this kid is morbid. I kind of feel sorry for the guy he's after....'

"Good! You're each unique and have your own ideas. We'll have our first mission tomorrow." Kakashi explained.

"What kind of mission are we going to have?!" Naruto asked, screaming by my ear.

I pushed my finger in my ear with a grunt as Kakashi explained. "It's a task that the five of us will do together."

"What-What-What-What?!" Naruto kept on.

"A survival exercise."

It was like thunder hit behind me as I gasped in shock. Kakashi smirked my way as I had a mini melt down. 'Those are so hard... he can't be serious!?'

"Huh?! A survival exercise?!" Naruto yelped.

"I thought we were going on a mission! Not more practice! We already did this stuff in the academy! That's how we got here!" Sakura exclaimed.

"This is so not like anything we've done in the academy, Sakura..." I spoke, still freaking. "I have six new scars from the last on he made me do!" I cry out, ruffling my hair.

They all looked at me like I was crazy. "She's right, you know." Kakashi hummed, leaning back against the wall.

"So, uh... what kind of training is it then?" Naruto asked.

Kakashi started to laugh. "Hey, hold on! That's a normal question! What's so funny?" Sakura asked.

"Well, if I tell you the answer, you're not going to like it." Kakashi jeered.

"Heeh?!" Naruto yelped.

"Of the twenty-eight graduates who just came here, only ten will be accepted as genin. The other eighteen will be sent back to the academy. In other words, this is a make it or break it, a pass or fail test. And the chance that you'll fail is sixty-six percent. See? Didn't I tell you, you wouldn't like it?"

"That's crazy!" Naruto screeched. "We worked hard to get here! Believe it! What was that graduation test for anyway?!"

"Oh that? That was just to select candidates who might become genin. Or not." Kakashi explained. "That's how it is. I decide whether you pass or fail. Be at the designated training spot at five A.M. And bring your ninja gear." He added. I stood up and stretched my arms over my head. "That's it, you're dismissed. Oh. Tomorrow, you better skip breakfast, or else, you'll puke." He added. I crossed my arms over my chest and wandered over to him.

"You're evil, Kakashi." I hum, grabbing onto his sleeve as we disappear into a cloud of smoke.

The next morning, I awoke at four in the morning. The sun hadn't risen yet. I set to making breakfast, Kakashi's voice echoing out into my head. 'Don't eat breakfast, or you'll puke.' I snorted lightly and set aside the pan and eggs. I traveled up to Kakashi's room, peering in timidly. "Kakashi?" He rolls over on his bed, opening one eye as I step in. "Do I really have to skip breakfast?"

He hums tiredly before sitting up, rubbing his head slowly. "Unfortunately, yes. Those are my rules."

"Well..... I'll just set aside your breakfast then and get going. See you in an hour!" I chime, leaving his room with a sigh. I set aside the breakfast I cooked and covered it for Kakashi to eat when he got up. I stepped out into the early morning air and inhaled softly, stretching my arms above my head in an attempt to wake myself up a little.

"Hey." I hear a cool voice call. It wasn't very loud, but with the birds just barely waking up, it was clear as a bell. I turn to him, smiling slightly.

"Hey, Sasuke. You just wake up too?" I question, making sure I had all my ninja gear. "I almost ate breakfast this morning out of habit." Sasuke smirks and we start walking towards our designated training grounds.

"What exactly did you mean, you had six scars from the last time Kakashi-Sensei made you train?" Sasuke hummed after a second of silence.

"Hm? Oh! Yeah. I live with Kakashi." I reply casually. I look over and giggle at his creeped out expression. "Don't worry, it's not anything creepy. We started living together when I came to this village. In a way, he became my family when I lost mine." I look upwards at the sky, smiling when the clouds drift lazily over the darkened sky, waiting for morning to break.

"What... happened to your family?" I look back downwards, feeling my heart shift at the question.

"They were murdered." I simply state, cutting off the conversation to walk in silence.

We arrive at the training grounds and stare at the lone tree in the middle of it. We were the first two to arrive and honestly, it felt good to be in silence with a friend. "Sorry." I hear Sasuke murmur as we stand together by the tree.

"It's fine... I didn't really tell anyone what had happened. It felt nice to tell someone what had happened to them."

"That's why I became a ninja. To avenge my family." Sasuke muttered, shoving his hands into his pockets.

"I heard about that.... what happened. I'm sorry." He didn't look at me after that, he just stared into the grass before us.

"Sasuke!" We both look over as we hear someone call excitedly. Sakura's green eyes narrow at me, glaring harshly as I stand a little to close to her 'precious' Sasuke. I roll my eyes and lean against the tree, getting out of her way. Naruto arrives shortly after and sits down besides me and starts nodding off, leaning against my leg. The day goes on and I start gritting my teeth. Kakashi was always late and it shouldn't bother me anymore, but unfortunately, it does. The sun is high in the sky by the time I sense Kakashi near by. I look over as he appears, holding his hand up in a wave.

Both Sakura and Naruto whirled around and screamed at him. "YOU'RE LATE!"

"A black cat crossed my path, so I had to take the long way around." He explained poorly. I narrowed my eyes at him and turned my nose up, seething in anger. "Well, let's get started," He spoke up as we all got into a line. He pulled out a timer and set it for a few hours. "Here we go. It's set for noon. Your assignment is very simple. You just have to take one of these bells from me. That's all there is to it. If you can't get them by noon, you go without lunch. You'll be tied to these posts, and you'll watch while I eat my lunch in front of you." Kakashi explained while pulling out three small bells. I swallowed thickly, feeling my stomach gurgle lightly.

"Wait a minute! There's four of us! How come there's only three bells?" Sakura asked, holding up three fingers.

"Well, that way, at least one of you will end up tied to a post and ultimately disqualified for failing to complete the mission. That one goes back to the academy. Then again, all four of you could flunk out too. You can use any weapons, including shuriken. If you're not prepared to kill me, you won't be able to get these bells."

"Those weapons are too dangerous, sensei." Sakura hummed.

"Why do you want to be a ninja again?" I question, ignoring that glare she sent me. "Hey, all I'm saying is why become a ninja if you think a little kunai thrown by one of us would ever kill a Jonin." I flashed a peace sign at her as her inner demon came out.

"He couldn't even dodge a chalk board eraser, Ren." Naruto jeered.

"Class clowns are usually the weakest links. You can safely ignore them. Lowest scores, losers." Kakashi teased. I giggled a little as Naruto huffed in anger. "When I say start, you can begin." Naruto charged a few seconds after he said that. Kakashi grappled him into a hold he used on me when I was younger. "Don't be in such a hurry. I didn't even say start."

"But you did come at me with the full intention of destroying me, so... How can I say this? I'm actually starting to like you guys..... Get ready... and. Start!" He commanded. We leapt away from the duo, hiding amongst the trees. I clasped my hands together in front of me, suppressing my chakra like Kakashi taught me. I exhaled softly and stealthily made my way around the perimeter, looking for that one vantage point I could get the drop on him.

My eyebrow twitched as Kakashi used the secret jutsu, A Thousand Years of Pain on Naruto, sending him into the water. I covered my face in embarrassment and pulled out a kunai. I peered out of the tree I had hidden in and readied myself, hoping that chance would arise. A small metallic object caught my attention. "Well that's one way to trap a moron." I hum as Naruto runs towards the bell. He gets flung into the air and caught on a rope, staring helplessly as Kakashi steps up, picking up the discarded bell. He began lecturing Naruto. 'Now!' I pull my arm back, throwing my kunai. It hits Kakashi with three shuriken coming from the opposite side. I backed up, leaving the tree I camped in as Kakashi's substitution took effect. I pulled out my wire and started building a trap. I created two shadow clones and set them up in other locations as a lure. I watched from my vantage point as one of my clones runs to the center of the trap, luring Kakashi inwards. I clasp my hands together. "Lightning Release: Shockwave!" I yelp, smiling as the wires alight with electricity all around him. He just gazes around, defeating the clone I had in with him.

"Hm. Not bad, Ren. But you should really keep an eye on your surroundings." Kakashi hums, shoving his hands in his pockets. A hand braces onto my back and sends me forwards, tumbling into the center of my trap. I groan in pain as I look backwards at the clone Kakashi had behind me, waving cheekily. "Are you going to try and take a bell?"

"I'll try, but I don't think I'll get one alone." I smirk, lunging forward with my kunai. Our kunai's clash together, sparks spraying out and onto the ground. He deflects my kunai and it hits the electrified wire and shoots out into the forest. I brace my hand onto the ground, kicking upwards and knocking his kunai out.

"Your taijutsu is getting better." Kakashi compliments as he blocks a series of kicks and punches effortlessly. "It seems like Guy is making progress with training you." I growl out and clasp my hands together.

"Shadow Clone Jutsu!" Three clones appear and we surround him. Kakashi is quick to disperse my clones, but it gave me enough time to draw water from the trees around us. I clasp my hands together in the tiger formation. "Water Release: Water Dragon Whip!" Long tendrils of water swing out, aiming towards Kakashi and destroying the ground and trees around us. He jumps out of the way, landing atop one of the trees and pulls out a kunai to deflect the whips. I run forward while he's distracted and leap towards him, going for the bells. I stop short as I feel hands wrap around my ankles. I yelp in surprise as all the water drops and soaks into my clothing as I'm tugged underneath the earth, stopping just at my neck.

I look up with a glare as the Kakashi I had been fighting disappears into a cloud of smoke and the real one steps around into my field of vision. "Head Hunter Jutsu complete." He jeers, kneeling down in front of me, pushing his finger onto the tip of my nose and pushing my nose back. "You're getting better with your Kekkei Genkai, Ren. Good job. Better luck next time though." He comments as I shuffle around, trying to free myself. He gets up and starts to wander off, swinging the bells around while whistling.

"Hey! Get me out of this jutsu first! You jerk!" I growl angrily as I worm around, freeing one hand and started to dig myself out. I hear a blood curdling scream in the forest, so I continue my efforts with vigor. I pull myself out of the hole and run towards the source. I stop short, a deep laugh building up as I stare at Sasuke's head poking out of the earth with a passed out Sakura in front of him. "Oh my god, this is too good." I cover my lips as I step forwards.

"J-Just shut up and get me out of this." Sasuke growls, looking away from me.

"Alright, alright. Gimme a sec." I clasp my hands together and water starts seeping out of the trees around us, curling downwards into the ground and softening the earth around Sasuke. I push my hands into the ground and grab underneath his shoulders and tug upwards. He flies out, landing astride my body. "Ow...." I groan, rubbing the back of my head as I wait for him to get off. I open my eyes and stare up at him, feeling my cheeks start to get hot. "W-Would you get off already!"

"You're the one who pulled me!" He growls back, moving off of me, and covering his lips with his fist. "We better wake her up." Sasuke changes the subject.

"Yeah. Hey, afterwards, I think we'll be able to get the bells from Kakashi if we work together. I almost had him earlier, but he used his head hunter jutsu." I ask, patting at Sakura's cheek lightly, trying to wake her. The sound of the timer echoed throughout the training grounds and my face falls. We failed the test.
