Chapter 11 ~ Boromir

As we make our way down the river a flock of birds circle high above, Black against the pale sky. Aragorn watches them with concern. The Three Elven boats drift slowly through the steep rocky gorge in the Pre-dawn light. There were three boats, one had Legolas and Gimli in it while another had Boromir, Merry and Pippin. I was in the boat along with Aragorn, Sam, and Frodo. Suddenly Aragorn, slowly paddling in the stern taps Frodo's shoulder and says his name as he points ahead of us.

Frodo slowly looks up, his eyes widening with amazement. Two enormous rock statues, towering like 300 foot pinnacles on either side of the river, carved images of Gondorian kings of old. They loom over the boats with power and majesty. "The Argonath, Long have I desired to look upon the kings of old...my kin." We stare in stunned silence as the current takes us through the narrow gap between the Statues' feet. After we pass the statues we reach a large lake. Aragorn motions to the rest of our companions to head to the shore. Upon reaching it we leap out of the boats and clamber onto the wooded shore.

"We cross the lake at nightfall, hide the boats and continue on foot, we approach Mordor from the North." Aragorn says as he hands me stuff from the boats to place on the bank.

"Oh, yes, just a simple matter of finding our way through Emyn Muil, an impassable labyrinth of razor sharp rocks. And after that gets even better, a festering, stinking marshland, far as the eye can see." Gimli says making my stomach churn.

"That is our Road...I suggest you take some rest and recover your strength, Master Dwarf." Aragorn jokes and I smile as an indignant Gimli replies, "Recover my..."

Legolas turns to Aragorn with urgency in his voice as he says, "We should leave now."

"No. Orcs patrol the Eastern shore. We must wait for cover of darkness."

"It is not the Eastern shore that worries me." Legolas casts a glance around into the Parth Galen forest as he continues saying, "A shadow and a threat has been growing in my mind. Something draws near, I can feel it." Aragorn looks at Legolas, knowing full well what he means.

I glance around to see that Sam has slumped asleep, while Merry dumps a small pile of kindling at Gimli's feet before he looks around and says, "Where's Frodo?" Sam sits up with a start as Aragorn's head snaps round. I gulp down a breath of air as I know what was about to happen next. As Aragorn walks off in one direction I start off in another. I was going to find Boromir and keep him alive if it was the last thing I did.

"I'm sorry, Frodo...Frodo.." I hear Boromir cry out and I instantly start making my way to him. When I reach him I see tears in his eyes as he sits before a tree silently chastising himself. "Are you alright?" I ask as gently sit down beside him.

"What have I done? I tried to take the ring from Frodo."

I wrap my arm around his shoulders and pull him in close to me as I say, "It would have happened to any of us. The ring has a strong power to manipulate anyone within reach of it."

"Then why does it not affect the rest of you like it does me?"

I sigh as I say, "Because you are man, the will of men has and will always be weak against evil; But I have faith that your will is now stronger since you have already been effected."

Before he is able to reply I feel an instant shudder of fear and jumping turn toward the direction Aragorn had gone. "What is it?" I hear Boromir ask and drawing my sword I say, "URUK-HAI," He instantly jumps up and drawing his sword stands next to me. The hills start to swarm with Uruk-Hai right as I here Merry yell out. Glancing at Boromir he nods and we run off after the sound of Merry's voice. Reaching the top of the hill I look down to see Merry and Pippin standing frozen on a little bridge the Uruk-Hai closing in fast.

With a quick nod to Boromir we rush forward reaching the Hobbit's right as a Uruk-Hai's sword is about to stab them. Boromir takes the first one his sword blocking the creatures advances. As we fight on I see Boromir reach for his horn and blow it. Many Uruk-Hai fall to Boromir's and my swords as we try to protect Merry and Pippin. "Run! Run!" Boromir yells to the Hobbits to flee. I place myself close to Boromir's side as I search for the lead Uruk-Hai, the one I know is going to kill Boromir.

I suddenly find him and my eyes widen as he takes aim at Boromir. As he releases his arrow I jump in between and placing my hand up in front of me feel the power from my dream fill my body and flow out like a wave blocking the arrow. The lead Uruk-Hai stares at me his eyes full of anger and hate as he slowly walks towards me. "No matter what happens, stay behind me." I say as I slowly twirl my swords awaiting the lead Uruk-Hai to reach us. He would stop every few moments when we were fighting other Uruk-Hai to shoot arrows at us; all of which I was able to block before they hit either of us.

Suddenly I feel something grab my hair and yank me back sending my flying away from my friend. When I find my feet I look up just in time to see an arrow pierce Boromir's chest. "No!" I scream out as I quickly find my feet and start to rush back over to him only to be attacked by more Uruk-Hai. Amazingly, Boromir continues fighting, but another arrow, and another, brings him to his knees. I stare wide eyed as I let out a blood curdling scream in anguish. "No!" I cry out as I fight harder to make my way over to him. Before I am able to reach him Merry and Pippin are scooped off their feet by URUK-HAI.

I hear Merry and Pippin cry out for Boromir and me to help them. Suddenly I am swarmed by Uruk-Hai them quickly disarming me. "Let me go!" I cry out as I try to fight against them.

"He wants her alive!" The leader calls out to his minions before they are able to kill me.

Suddenly my arms are yanked behind my back and quickly tied. I stare at Boromir as the lead Uruk-Kai slowly starts to descend the hill toward him. I thrash around as they pick me up and one tossing me over his shoulder they start to head off after the same Uruk-Hai that had taken the Hobbits. I kick and thrash as I try to break free from their grasp to get back to Boromir but to no avail. We disappear over the hill right as Aragorn reaches Boromir. "Boromir!" I cry out one last time before one of the Uruk-Hai use the hilt of their sword making my world go black as tears fell from my eyes. I had tried to save him and I had failed. What good was my being with them when I couldn't change who died?

When my eyes open I am still being carried by the same Uruk-Hai. I glance over to see Merry and Pippin tied to a couple of Uruk-hai's backs. Merry has a bad cut on his head and is very sleepy. Pippin tries to talk to him calling his name over and over again. Suddenly the Uruk-hai carrying us stop. Ana suddenly a group of Mordor Orcs appears one I take as the leader saying, "You're late our master grows impatient. He wants the Shire-rats and the Dark Lord's daughter now."

"I don't take orders from Orc-maggots. Saruman will have his prize. We will deliver them."

I glance sleepily over at Merry who's head was caked with blood. "Merry," I call out my voice hoarse.

"Merry! Merry? Wake up!" Pippin cries out at his cousin before he turns and looks at the Uruk-Hai who are drinking from a flask.

"My friend is sick. He needs water. Please!" Pippin cries out making the Uruk-Hai laugh as one of them says, "Sick, is he? Give him some medicine, boys!" The Uruk-Hai pours the liquid from their flasks into Merry's mouth, who wakes up coughing and spluttering.

"Stop it!" Pippin yells out as he tries to reach for his friend.

"Can't take his draught!" Another Uruk-Hai says laughing.

"Leave him alone!" Pippin cries out again and I try to move my arms.

"Why? You want some?" One of the Uruk-Hai says and Merry shakes his head.

"Then keep your mouth shut." The Uruk-Hai says before he turns away.

"Merry?" Pippin says to his friend earning him a hoarse, "Hello, Pip."

"You're hurt."

"I'm fine. It was just an act."

"An act?"

"See? I fooled you too. Don't worry about me, Pippin."

Merry suddenly looks over at me and his eyes widen, "______?"

I force a smile as I say, "Hello Merry," before he is able to say anything more an Uruk-Hai sniffs the air causing another to say, "What is it? What do you smell?"

"Man-flesh"

"They've picked up our trail!"

Pippin looks in wonder and whispers "Aragorn." Causing my heart to jump into my throat.

"Let's move!" The leader cries out As the Uruk-hai band run off with Merry and Pippin still tied to their backs, with his mouth, Pippin pulls off his elven leaf brooch from his cloak and throws it to the ground. I start thrashing around once again trying to free myself when the Uruk-Hai carrying me tightens his grip making the air forcefully leave my lungs causing me once again to lose consciousness.

Looking around I see Boromir standing there his body full of arrows and his grey eyes staring at me full of anger and betrayal. "This is your fault."

"No, I tried to save you!" I saw as I walk closer to him tears in my eyes.

"You should have told me that I was going to die." I open my mouth to say something but he was right, I should have told him. "I trusted you and you just let me die!" He yells out and I fall to my knees tears streaming down my face as I cry out, "I'm sorry!" over and over again.

Suddenly I am awoken by the force of someone throwing me down against the ground. I open my eyes right as Merry and Pippin are thrown to the ground beside me. I feel something fall down my cheek and reaching up to touch my face realize that I am still crying. "We're not going no further......until we've had a breather." An Orc cries out as he breathes heavily.

"Get a fire going!" The Lead Orc cries out making me glance toward the Hobbits. I glance back toward the Orcs and Uruk-Hai's as they move towards the trees. Pippin crawls towards as he says, "Merry! Merry!" I look back at my friends to see that Merry has a large cut on his forehead.

"I think we might have made a mistake leaving the Shire, Pippin." Pippin grins.

As the Orcs and Uruk-Hai chop down trees a low loud groaning noise is heard. "What's making that noise?" Pippin says looking around.

Merry looks up at the forest before he says, "It's the trees."

"What?"

"You remember the Old Forest, on the borders of Buckland? Folk used to say there was something in the water that made the trees grow tall, and come alive."

 "Alive?"

"Trees that could whisper, talk to each other, even move."

"I'm starving. We ain't had nothing but maggoty bread for three stinking days." One of the Uruk-Hai says and I instinctively move closer to the Hobbits placing them behind me.

"Yeah! Why can't we have some meat?!" Says one of the Orcs before he looks toward me and the Hobbits and continues, "What about them? They're fresh."

"They are not for eating." The leader yells out as he moves closer to us.

Suddenly an Uruk-Hai drags Merry, Pippin, and I away from the Orcs. "What about their legs? They don't need those." The Orc says again and I narrow my eyes at him while Merry and Pippin look astonished and glance at their legs. "Oh, they look tasty." The Orc says as he walks towards the hobbits but his thrown back the lead Uruk-Hai as he says, "Get back, scum! The prisoners go to Saruman. Alive and unspoiled."

"Alive?" He replies as he moves towards us again and continues, "Why alive? Do they give good sport?"

"They have something. An Elvish weapon. The master wants it for the war." The leader replies and my heart clenches. I glance out of the corner of my eye and watch as an Orc creeps up to us with his blade.

"They think we have the Ring." Pippin says and I instantly shush him.

"Ssh! As soon as they find out we don't, we're dead." Merry says voicing my point.

By this time the Orc is close to the hobbits now and raises his blade as he says, "Just a mouthful, a bit of the flank." I struggle to get closer to the hobbits right as the Uruk-Hai raises his scimitar and cuts off the Orcs head which rolls off the hobbits shoulders.

"Looks like meat's back on the menu, boys." He says causing The Uruk-hai to push past Merry, Pippin, and I throwing us Out of the way as they fight to get to the body.

"Pippin. Let's go." Merry says as he and his friend start to crawl away. Right as I am about to follow they are stopped as an Orc places a foot on Merry's back. Pippin rolls over as the Orc says, "Go on. Call for help." He squeezes Pippin's cheeks as he continues saying, "Squeal. No one's going to save you now." As he lifts his blade I push myself off the ground and throw my body into his knocking him backwards away from the Hobbits.

"Keep your filthy hands off!" I yell at him as I find my feet and stand up placing myself between him and the Hobbits. He quickly finds his feet and rushes toward me.

Suddenly a spear is thrown into his back and he falls over. A group of soldiers on horses appear and start slaying the Orcs and Uruk-Hai. "Move!" I yell out as I turn to the Hobbits and start slowly moving them toward the forest. As we try to escape Pippin falls onto his back and rolling over to escape an attacking Orc sees a horse rearing above him and lets out a loud yell. He quickly rolls over dodging the horse's hooves as they land above his head and then Pippin and Merry crawl away on their stomachs while I follow behind my hands still tied behind my back. Suddenly Pippin finds a fallen axe and calls Merry and I over. After the Hobbits cut their bonds they lift the axe and quickly cut mine.

"Quick into the forest!" I cry out causing them to rush toward the woods dodging falling Orcs and Riders. As we make our way towards the woods Merry is pulled back by his elven belt by the Orc from before the spear still sticking out of his back. "The belt!" I yell causing Merry to quickly unclasp his belt so that the Orc is left holding just that. "Run!" I cry out once again as the three of us head deep into the forest not even bothering to grab a weapon or even look back.
