X: On the Road

So the Fellowship of the Ring set off.

Gandalf led us in the front, followed by Legolas the Elf, Gimli the Dwarf, Frodo, Sam, Merry, me, the horse, Ginger (whose name I found out to be Boromir), and Aragorn brought up the rear.

"We must hold this course, west of the Misty Mountains, for 40 days. If our luck holds, the Gap of Rohan will still be open to us. From there, our road turns east to Mordor." Gandalf was murmuring to himself.

Sam and Frodo were eating sausage while Boromir was teaching Merry and I how to handle the swords Aragorn gave us at Weathertop.

I felt bad for dubbing him "the annoying guy," because he was actually a pretty good teacher. Aragorn sat off to the side, smoking a pipe as Boromir's blade clanked against mine.

"Two, one, five. Good! Very good." Boromir said.

He stepped back and then came at me again.

"Move your feet," Aragorn suggested as I parried the downstrokes.

I caught Boromir's sword on mine and Merry complimented me.

"You look good Pippin." Merry grinned.

"Thanks," I nodded. I wasn't positive on wether he meant my outfit (I had takes off the blazer thingy, but I still had my scarf on), or the sword handling, but I let it pass.

Boromir went after Merry now. "Faster!"

Then I stepped in and Boromir fought us both.

A sharp, searing pain went through my finger; a feeling I had felt only once before when I cut my finger chopping mushrooms.

"Ow!" The sword clattered to the ground as I tried to shake away the pain.

Now I wasn't so sorry about the whole "ginger" thing.

"Sorry!" Boromir cried, realizing he had cut my finger.

I kicked him irritably, and Merry yelled, "get him!"

Merry smacked him with the flat of his sword and Boromir went down.

Merry and I tackled him, just horsing around, now.

"For the Shire!" Merry cried.

"Hold him! Hold him down!" I instructed.

"You've got my arm, you've got my arm!" Merry shouted.

"Hold on, hold on guys." Boromir stood up as Sam looked to the sky.

"What is that?" he asked.

"Nothing. It's just a wisp of a cloud." Gimli reassured him gruffly.

"It's moving fast," Boromir argued. "Against the wind."

I could tell it was some sort of bird formation.

"Crebain from Dunland!" Legolas identified.

"Hide!" Aragorn shouted. "Hurry! Take cover!"

Merry and I raced down the side of the mountain. I grabbed my sword and sheathed it as I ran.

Sam put out the fire.

Frodo rolled up his belongings and dove under a rock shelf with Aragorn.

Merry and I watched the birds turn around the mountain, chirping loudly.

We pushed the bush we were hiding under over a little so we could see them pass.

We stood up to hear Gandalf say, "spies of Saruman. The passage south is being watched." He turned to all of us. "We must take the Pass of Caradhras."

He turned to the snowy mountain in the north.

Oh great.

Snow.

************************************

We trudged trough the waist deep snow (well, a Hobbit's waist, anyway), except for Legolas. Being a light weight Elf, he could simply walk on top of the snow, hardly leaving footprints.

"Frodo!" Aragorn caught him as Frodo fell and rolled back down the mountain. Frodo stood up, brushing snow off himself, when he realized he didn't have the Ring around his neck like he should.

It lay in the snow, and it was picked up by Boromir.

We all turned and watched as Boromir stared at the One Ring.

"Boromir," Aragorn said. Boromir didn't notice.

"It is a strange fate that we should all suffer so much fear and doubt over so small a thing. Such a little thing."

He reached out to touch it, and Aragorn said louder, "Boromir!"

Boromir looked up.

"Give the Ring to Frodo."

Boromir stepped over the snow to Frodo. He held out the Ring and Frodo snatched it from his grasp.

"As you wish," Boromir said. "I care not."

He ruffled Frodo's hair innocently, but I could tell something was going on between Boromir and the Ring.

Did Boromir have a thing for the One Ring?

************************************

We were practically pushing our way through the thick snow now. we were on a ridge on Caradhras, and the snow made it difficult to see where the edge was.

So I hugged the side of the mountain, terrified.

Eventually, the Men decided the Hobbits needed a lift, so Merry and I rode on Boromir's back while Frodo and Sam rode on Aragorn's back.

At least I think I was on Boromir's back.

It was really hard to see through the thick downpour of snow.

"There is a fell voice on the air." Legolas said. He had stepped ahead of us (on top of the snow) to look around, but there was no one.

But then I heard the voice as well.

"It's Saruman!" Gandalf shouted as the sound of rocks cracking came from above us.

We looked up as a heavy onslaught of rocks tumbled down towards us.

We hugged the side if the cliff as the rocks freight trained past us.

"He's trying to bring down the mountain!" Aragorn shouted. "Gandalf, we must turn back!"

"No!" Gandalf said firmly. He stepped forward and uttered a few incantations. He was fighting back against Saruman.

I gasped as a bolt of lightning streaked across the sky and hit the top of the mountain.

Snow cascaded down upon us. We shouted as the heavy snow covered us completely.

Boromir fought against the snow and tried to dig out so we could breathe. But we were surrounded in white. There was no way to tell any direction.

My hands slipped off of Boromir's shoulders and I tried to claw y way out of the heavy snow.

A hand grabbed my hood and Aragorn pulled me up.

"Thank you," I coughed and checked to see if Merry was okay.

"We must get off the mountain!" Boromir shouted. "Make for the Gap of Rohan, and take the west road to my city!"

"The Gap of Rohan takes us too close to Isengard!" Aragorn argued.

"We can not pass over a mountain. Let us go under it." Gimli said. "Let us go through the Mines of Moria."

I could see Gandalf contemplating.

"Let the Ring-bearer decide." Gandalf said finally.

Frodo looked up at all of us.

"Frodo?"

"We will go through the Mines." Frodo decided.

Gandalf grimaced.

"So be it."
