Chapter 23

The night air felt heavier as Sanjana stood on the terrace alone, leaning against the railing. The others had left a while ago, leaving her thoughts as her only company. The fairy lights twinkled softly above her, but her mind was clouded with confusion. Jungkook’s piercing gaze, Taehyung’s lingering looks, and the subtle yet undeniable tension between the two weighed heavily on her.

She brushed her fingers across the charm bracelet Taehyung had given her, her heart fluttering at the memory of his words. “It tells a story… and seeing it on you? It fits better than I imagined.” Then her thoughts shifted to Jungkook, his voice low and filled with an unusual warmth. “Comfort and style. It suits you.”

What am I supposed to make of all this? she thought, letting out a soft sigh.

The sound of footsteps behind her made her stiffen. She turned, expecting to see Yaini or maybe Hobi, but it was Jungkook. He stood in the doorway, his hands shoved into his pockets, his expression unreadable.

“You’re still here,” he said, his voice as cool as the night breeze.

“I… I needed some air,” Sanjana replied softly, fidgeting with the hem of her dress.

Jungkook stepped closer, his presence commanding but not overwhelming. He stopped a few feet away, leaning casually against the railing beside her. For a moment, neither of them spoke, the silence filled only by the faint hum of the city below.

“You liked the dress?” he asked suddenly, his tone softer, almost hesitant.

Sanjana glanced at him, surprised by the question. “I did,” she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. “It’s… comfortable. And cute.”

A ghost of a smile tugged at the corner of Jungkook’s lips, but it disappeared just as quickly. “Good,” he said, his gaze fixed on the view in front of them. “I wanted you to feel at ease tonight.”

Sanjana’s heart skipped a beat. His cold demeanor always made him seem untouchable, but moments like this reminded her of the warmth he kept hidden beneath the surface.

“Jungkook…” she began, her voice faltering. “Why did you… go through so much trouble for tonight?”

He didn’t answer immediately. When he finally spoke, his voice was quiet, almost vulnerable. “Because you matter.” He turned to face her, his dark eyes locking with hers. “I don’t show it often, but… I notice things about you. How you hesitate to speak, how you avoid drawing attention to yourself. I wanted you to have a night where you didn’t have to feel that way.”

Sanjana’s cheeks flushed, and she looked down, unable to hold his gaze. “That’s… really thoughtful of you.”

Jungkook’s expression softened further, but before he could say more, the sound of the terrace door opening broke the moment.

“Sanjana?” Taehyung’s deep voice called out.

Jungkook’s jaw tightened as Taehyung stepped onto the terrace, his sharp eyes immediately catching the closeness between them.

“Am I interrupting something?” Taehyung asked, his tone laced with playful sarcasm but his gaze challenging.

Jungkook straightened, his cold demeanor snapping back into place. “What do you want, Taehyung?”

“I just wanted to check on her,” Taehyung replied smoothly, walking toward them. His eyes flickered to Sanjana, his expression softening. “You looked a bit overwhelmed earlier. I thought you might need someone to talk to.”

Sanjana felt her pulse quicken as Taehyung stopped a little too close to her, his presence both comforting and intimidating.

“I’m fine,” she mumbled, her voice barely audible.

“Really?” Taehyung’s tone was gentle but probing. “You don’t have to pretend, you know. If something’s on your mind, you can tell me.”

Jungkook scoffed, crossing his arms. “She said she’s fine. Maybe you should stop pushing her.”

Taehyung’s jaw tightened, but he quickly masked his irritation with a smirk. “I’m not pushing her, Jungkook. I’m just offering her someone to talk to. Not everyone shuts their feelings away like you do.”

Sanjana felt the tension between them like a physical weight. She opened her mouth to say something, but the words wouldn’t come out.

Taehyung noticed her hesitation and took a step back, giving her space. “It’s okay,” he said softly, his gaze lingering on her. “I’ll leave you to your thoughts. But if you ever need me…” He tapped the charm bracelet on her wrist lightly, a small smile playing on his lips. “You know where to find me.”

As he turned to leave, he shot Jungkook a pointed look, one that spoke volumes without words.

When the door closed behind Taehyung, the silence between Sanjana and Jungkook was deafening.

“He’s always like that,” Jungkook muttered, his voice cold but his fists clenched tightly. “Acting like he knows what’s best for everyone.”

Sanjana looked at him, her voice trembling but sincere. “He’s just… different. Like you are.”

Jungkook’s gaze softened at her words, but he didn’t respond. Instead, he turned back to the view, his shoulders relaxing slightly.

“You should get some rest,” he said after a long pause. “It’s been a long night.”

Sanjana nodded, though her heart felt heavier with each step she took toward the door. As she glanced back, she caught Jungkook’s profile illuminated by the soft glow of the lights. He looked lost in thought, his cold exterior momentarily cracking.

The night had left her with more questions than answers, and as she headed back inside, she couldn’t shake the feeling that her world was about to change in ways she couldn’t yet understand.
