Chapter Eighteen

Luna hissed as a group of warriors surged from the forest, eyes ablaze and claws unsheathed.

How had they crept up on her? Luna wondered irritably as she took a few cautious steps backwards, with Silver pressing against her side. She felt her heart pound painfully in her chest as she flicked her tail. Had Shadowclan known she was coming to seek revenge for her mother? Luna narrowed her eyes at the prospect of losing the elements of surprise.

She glanced quickly at Silver, who gave her a small nod in response to her unspoken question.

If worst comes to worst, we will fight, Luna decided, and she was surprised by the pang of dread pooling in her chest at the thought of fighting...

The ShadowClan warriors; two toms and a she-cat, padded forward, their eyes narrowed and fur standing up.

"What are you doing here? This is ShadowClan territory, and you sure don't smell like any clan cat," the she-cat hissed sharply, her blue eyes quickly flitting from Luna to Silver. Her grey dappled fur gleamed under the sunlight, and Luna could see powerful muscles rippling underneath her pelt.

"Frostpool, calm down. They barely look older than an apprentice." A broad-shouldered black tom said soothingly, before shooting a warning gaze at Luna and Silver.

"But the prophecy! Briarstar said to make sure-"

This came from a small russet-furred tom, who was then abruptly silenced by a look from the she-cat. The russet-furred tom ducked his head apologetically, but still hissed warningly at Luna and Silver.

"We're just passing through," Luna meowed lightly. "We heard of the clans and the warriors that live in the forest, so we were curious." She addressed the silver she-cat, who seemed to be the leader of the group.

The she-cat, whom the tom had addressed as Frostpool, blinked at Luna and Silver for a minute, before flicking her tail.

"Times are uncertain," she meowed finally. "Which is why we can't let you two go. We will escort you to Brairstar, and she can decide what to do with you."

The she-cat nodded to her companions, who immediately circled around Luna and Silver, leading them into the forest. The black tom and the russet tom stood on both sides, with Frostpool leading them.

"You're badly outnumbered, so don't try anything," the russet cat warned. Silver gave an obedient nod, but Luna was lost in thought.

The clan cats seemed oblivious to her motives, and obviously, they'd believed Luna's explanation and thought she and Silver were just pesky, harmless rogues passing through.

Perhaps... Luna gazed up to the sky, almost feeling Dawn's presence beside her.

Perhaps I can use this to my advantage...
