Chapter Twenty Seven
-Dick's POV-
I leaned back in my chair, yawning. Working at the police station was either super exciting, or super boring. There was no in between. Amy had gone out on a personal case, insisting that I stay behind and work the calls. All day, I had been receiving 911 calls and telling the other policemen where to go.
Calls came in and out, mostly just boring things. The police department rarely got actually exciting calls because there were superheroes out there who handled the bigger problems. In Bludhaven, murder cases and violent crimes were handled by the finest protector, Nightwing.
But, Officer Grayson got to handle small kitchen fires and stolen cars.
The phone rang. I sighed. Why was a police officer put on the operating lines?
"This is the Bludhaven Police Department, what's your emergency?" I recited my line with a bored tone like I was reading a script I was forced to memorize.
"I-I," the person on the line sounded anxious and scared, "t-they came after me."
I sat up in my chair. Something finally interesting! "Who came after you?"
The woman sniffled. "He called himself the...the Red Hood. Him and his partner," she paused, her voice wobbling and shaking, "They came after me!"
I smirked a little. Realizing how scared the woman sounded, I quickly dropped the expression. She wasn't making a lot of sense. The worry and anxiety that corrupted her voice made all of her words come out jumbled.
"Ma'am," I said, calmly, "everything will be okay, I am sending an officer over now."
I stood up quickly, grabbing a rookie by the shoulder. "Take over the phones, will you? I'm going out on a personal case," I smirked, putting on my hat and running outside.
I sped through Bludhaven on my motorcycle. Not wasting anytime, I flipped off of my bike and ran into the apartment complex where the call had came from. The apartment was in a nice part of Bludhaven. And it really wasn't an apartment. It was more of a penthouse. I raised an eyebrow. Why would such a rich girl call the police when she could just hire a body guard?
I knocked on her door. An actual body guard opened the door. I wasn't surprised.
"Officer Grayson," I pulled out my badge and held it to the guard's face, "I received a woman's call from this address."
"Yes, yes! Is that the police?" A woman's voice screeched as she hustled to the door. An older woman -- about in her fifties -- pushed past her guard and grabbed my wrist. She tugged inside her apartment.
The entire place was white and clean with huge windows that displayed Bludhaven's city skyline. I glanced around, wondering why such a woman would be targeted by Red Hood.
She nervously paced as I inspected her house. Everything seemed in place, which was odd for an attack. "May I inspect the place further?" I asked, pulling out a notepad and pen.
"Yes, please. Would you like something to drink? Coffee? Water? Wine? Champagne?" The woman went behind her bar, her shaking hands fiddling with the bottles. I grinned softly.
"No, thank you ma'am," I walked around, looking for any hints that she was attacked at all, "I believe I didn't catch your name. What is it?"
She staggered out and offered her old hand. Her nails were painted cottony pink and she had a gigantic diamond ring on her right ring finger. A golden bracelet hung loosely around her wrist. "Marla Sionis," Marla shook my hand gently, "or, Marla Scott now I guess."
I recognized the surname. It all made sense.
"Well, Marla, I am here to help in anyway I can. And you are safe now," I smiled, glancing at her old wedding ring.
I strolled through her penthouse. When I finally reached the office, I grinned.
Whoop, there it is.
The windows on the wall facing the city were smashed, glass everywhere on the floor. The table was flipped and chairs were all over the room. Papers were scattered. Now that was what a crime scene looked like!
Marla stood in the doorway as I took notes on the condition of the room. Her fingers nervously threaded through the pearls she wore around her neck. "I was working late last night when suddenly the window was shattered," she explained.
"If this happened last night, why did you call now?" I asked, preparing my pen to write down her answer.
"I was scared!" Marla defended herself fiercely, "They threatened me! They said if I said anything that they would tell my husband!"
Of course. If Black Mask found out that his ex-wife had snitched to his enemy, she would have worse things coming to her than death.
But, something bothered me. "Tell me exactly what happened."
Marla took a sip of her red wine and faced me. "Last night, around midnight, I was sitting at my desk. Out of nowhere, they smashed through my window. I hid under my desk, but the girl flipped it. I threw chairs at them, but it was no use!
"Red Hood asked me my name, so I lied at first. But he knew I was lying. He grabbed me by the wrist and held me out over the edge of my window. He said if I didn't tell the truth he would drop me!"
I nodded. "And this girl? Who was she?"
"I don't know," Marla took another gulp, "some Gotham vigilante like him? I'd never seen her around Bludhaven before. That's exactly why I moved from Gotham after the divorce! The so-called-heroes are so vicious! It's bad enough that one of them decided to move here, too!"
I frowned slightly. If only she knew who she was talking to.
I got back to business, swallowing down the insult. "What was she wearing? Did she seem like she was his partner or his prisoner?"
Marla laughed. "Prisoner? What kind of prisoner voluntarily helps interrogate an innocent woman?" Marla groaned and pinched the bridge of her nose. "They asked me questions about my husband and my work before leaving. I only told them that he doesn't have much business in Bludhaven.
"After they finished trashing my office, Red Hood dove out the window and his partner threatened me before leaving as well," Marla took a deep breath once she was finished talking, "I was too scared to call right away, but once the sun came up I felt much better."
I bit my lip. "Was the girl wearing mostly black with white and red silk bands tied around her wrists, ankles, and a red and white domino mask?"
Marla nodded quickly. "Yes! That was her!"
"Nightingale," I confirmed, frowning. I was glad I was right about their partnership, but that didn't mean that I liked it. I wasn't surprised, however. Why would she be loyal to the Bat? What was stopping her from working with the man we were trying to track down?
"Are you sure they won't come after me?" Marla was still shaking. I put my hand on her expensive pant suit shoulder. I looked her in the eyes.
"I can assure you that the Bludhaven Police Department will keep you safe," I said, truthfully. The department would place Marla in protective custody the moment I told them what happened.
I left Marla's penthouse, putting my notes in my briefcase. Quickly, I talked to the head Officer before leaving and calling up Bruce.
I explained everything that I heard, especially the proof that Nightingale was on Red Hood's side. Bruce took it with a grain of salt and told me that he wanted to discuss the effects of my interview in person. I smiled, knowing that for once, I had gotten important intel before Batman.
Feeling in the mood to celebrate, I called up my best friend. "Walmart, you free?"
Wally groaned. "Don't call me that, you Dick," Wally laughed, "Where do you wanna meet?"
"Starlight. It's a new club in Gotham," I changed out of my Police uniform and into a very hipster looking outfit. I shook my hair, making it fall in my face in messy waves. Doing finger guns at myself in the mirror, I drove to the club.
"Be there in a flash!" Wally said, hanging up.
Per usual, Wally was already waiting for me outside of the club. The line went already down the street. Wally glanced at it but neither of us were very worried about getting in. I flashed the bouncer my ID and he let us in with no problem. Being Bruce Wayne's ward really paid off.
We both gravitated to the bar. Just like every other club in existence, it was dark with pink strobe lights. It was hot and sweaty. People were dancing and drinking, enjoying their youth. I chuckled.
"First drink is on me!" I shouted over the music to Wally. I wasn't sure if he heard me, but he smiled once I bought us both shots. We pounded them down. Pretty soon, we were taking shots one after another. And another. And another.
Thirty minutes later, Wally slapped my shoulder. "L-let's dance, my boy! I need to danceeee!"
I laughed and agreed and we both staggered over to the dance floor. We danced together, politely turning down the string of girls that tried to join us. When a circle cleared up, Wally started to break dance, drawing the attention of the club. I clapped along like a seal.
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Athena.
"Wally, I'll be right back!" I called to him as he continued to pop and lock. He nodded and I dashed through the crowd. Her heels clicked on the floor as she slowly walked toward the door. I reached out and grasped her arm, spinning her around.
"Get the fuck off, dude!" The girl jerked out of my grasp. It wasn't her.
I sighed. My drunken mind started to twist every thought into something depressing. My heart pounded as I left the club and called a taxi.
The only address in my mind was the one Tim had told me earlier on accident.
As we passed my Gotham apartment, a pair of sparkling blue eyes haunted my brain.
