Rescue
pov. Jason
I was about to loose my mind. Since we jumped into hyperspace, I had been running from one end of the shuttle to the other. I held Grogu's transmitter tightly. It was still beeping and flashing. From time to time I stared at the device in my hand, as if it would help my brother find his way to me more quickly.
I reached the end of the ship again, turned on my heel and walked in the direction of the cockpit. "Can't you fly faster?" I leaned on Omega's headrest and stared into hyperspace. Poe once said to me that there was nothing more beautiful than the vastness of hyperspace. But now it just reminded me that we still needed time to get to our destination. Time that Poe may no longer have.
The blonde pushed the toothpick in her mouth into the right corner of her mouth. "If I press the pedal any further, we'll have a hole in the outer shell." She turned her head and looked at me. "Believe me, I'm flying as fast as I can." She murmured quietly.
I sighed desperately and started moving the transmitter back and forth between my fingers. I hoped Grogu would make it in time. Because even though Kix and Omega were more than capable and I'd already been through a few battles myself, it was never wrong to have a Force user on your side.
A beep tore me out of my thoughts. My gaze flew to the button panel. A tiny smile twitched at the corners of my mouth. We had reached our destination.Omega seemed to catch my eye. "We're going to need a plan." Without looking, she pulled the hyperspace lever back and the gray surface of Iktotch appeared in front of us.I nodded absently. Poe was somewhere down there.
"You two distract them. I'm looking for Poe." I knew myself that this plan wasn't exactly watertight, but I didn't care.
Next to me, Kix cracked his knuckles. "First we have to land on this planet unnoticed." He pointed with his head at the Star Destroyer that was floating in front of us in the atmosphere of the industrial planet.I bit my lower lip slightly. He was right. Without landing codes, it would be anything but easy. If we got anywhere near these cruisers, we would appear on their sensors. They wouldn't hesitate and would shoot us down.
Omega laughed quietly. "Just leave it to me!" With nimble fingers, she pressed various buttons and pulled down one lever after the other.I looked at her, a little confused. It almost looked as if she was shutting down our engines completely. But doing that within a planet's gravitational field would be madness. We would crash. "Omega, what's going on?" I grabbed the headrests of the pilot's seats with my hands so I could hold on to something.
In front of me, Kix looked reproachfully at the blonde "You promised me you wouldn't do that again!"
Omega shrugged her shoulders "Do you have a better idea?" she answered the paramedic without answering my question. For a few seconds, the clone's eyes darted around in his eye sockets, thinking, then he shook his head in surrender "No."
I let the transmitter disappear from my hand into my belt bag "Could one of you please tell me what's going on here?" I looked back and forth between the two of them.
Kix took his foot off the dashboard in front of him and ran his hand through his hair "You'd rather not know" he straightened his shoulders a little "You'd better hold on tight."
Omega snorted indignantly "He's exaggerating." Without another word, she slammed her clenched fist on a red button.
The engines roared. Sparks flew. The air was forced out of my lungs as the shuttle nosedived towards the planet below us. I clung to the seats to my right and left with all my strength. My legs came off the ground. Gravity had disappeared.Omega was unimpressed. Her long hair, held in check by a red bandana, flowed around her as if she were underwater and not in a starship.
She calmly pressed a few buttons and our ship stabilized again. "Child's play," she grinned and steered the ship towards the surface of the planet. With a groan, I landed back on my feet. I had thought Poe's judgment would switch off as soon as he sat in the cockpit. But Omega was on a completely different level.
Smaller transport ships passed us by. The surface of the planet came ever closer. Gray concrete blocks were close together across the landscape. In the distance I could see a face. When I was last here with Din years ago, this planet was covered with forests and meadows. Trees had grown majestically in tretched into the sky, so high that their crowns almost touched the clouds. Animals had roamed the dense forests. There were no big cities back then, just small villages where people led a simple, happy life. There was no sign of that now. The First Order had destroyed this planet.
My gaze wandered further and fell on a large building. My hands clenched into fists. It was without a doubt the base of the First Order. A high wall ran around the entire complex. Four manned gun turrets were located at each corner of the base. A few stormtroopers stood guard on the wall. The hairs on the back of my neck stood on end. Infiltrating this base would be more difficult than expected. But giving up was not an option.
I took a deep breath. For a tiny second I thought it might be wiser to wait until Grogu was here. But I ignored this feeling and put my helmet on. I didn't even know if he had received my signal or how long it would take him to reach us. I couldn't wait for him. "I just have to get close to the base." I grabbed my jetpack, which was leaning in a corner, and attached it to the device provided on my back.
Omega nodded "Understood," she flew a steep spiral and headed for the base "take care of yourself. We'll hold them off as long as we can," she assured me. With the push of a button, she opened the loading ramp.I nodded gratefully to the blonde.
Before I could make my way to the loading ramp, Kix threw me a small box of pain patches "Just in case."I didn't know whether he meant Poe or me. But I was grateful to him. Pain patches were a rare commodity in the resistance.
I quickly stowed the patches in one of my belt bags and walked quickly to the loading ramp. Just in time, because we were directly above the First Order base.Without hesitation, I let myself fall out of the shuttle. The wind tugged at my clothes. I could see Omega firing a few blaster volleys at the base. Two of the gun turrets flew into the air with a fireball. Before the stormtroopers could react, Omega turned and launched a second attack.
I turned in the air and raced towards the ground in free fall. If I activated my jack pack now, they might see me on their scanners. The ground was getting closer and closer. Just before I hit the ground, I activated my jack pack for a few seconds to cushion my fall a little.
I hit the concrete with a groan. I felt myself roll over several times and then slam into something hard. Coughing, I picked myself up. Once again, I was grateful for my Beskar armor. If I hadn't been wearing it, I would have broken several bones. I activated the thermal imaging function of my visor and scanned my surroundings for enemies. I was relieved to see that there were none to be seen. With a push of a button on my helmet, I turned off the thermal imaging function again.
I had landed directly in front of the rear outer wall of the base. I could still hear blaster fire above my head. Determined, I activated my jack pack again and slowly climbed the wall in front of me. Before I had even reached the crest of the wall, I drew my vibro blade. I left my blasters in their holsters. I had to be like a shadow if I wanted to find Poe and disappear with him before my presence was even noticed. With a heavy heart, I turned off Grogu's transmitter. The beeping would only give away my position.
My hands closed around the edge of the wall. With a push of a button, I deactivated my jetpack and pulled myself up onto the wall using muscle power. As quietly as my armor allowed, I ran along the paved path. I hadn't encountered any stormtroopers yet. They were all too busy shooting at the attacking shuttle. Out of the corner of my eye I saw the starship swoop down on the base again like a hawk, leaving a few craters in the ground and then immediately disappearing again. Our plan worked.
I found my way into the base without any resistance. As soon as I entered the corridor, goosebumps formed on my arms. This place radiated nothing but desperation. I gripped my knife tighter and moved forward with springy steps. I kept looking back to make sure I wasn't being followed. "You could put signs for the corridors." I thought stressed as I came to a place where the corridor splitt appart. I had no idea which direction the detention block was in. My eyes darted nervously back and forth between the two corridors. I really wished BB8 was here. He could just get into it and find the right way.
"Don't move!" a brisk voice echoed through the corridor.
Sweat formed on my forehead. My muscles tensed. My fingers tightened around the knife in my hand. I was facing five stormtroopers. A grim grin played around my mouth, which of course my enemies couldn't see under my helmet. These five amateurs were no match for me.
I tilted my head a little "Where is the arrest block!"One of the troopers laughed dully "Surrender and we'll show you." He aimed his blaster at my head. His comrades aimed their weapons at my upper body.
I jumped towards them without answering them. The first blaster shot hit me. It bounced off my helmet without effect. The second shot bounced off my breastplate. Without hesitation, I swung my knife and slit the throat of the man in front of me. His blood sprayed out at me and sprinkled my helmet. The trooper collapsed, gasping.
A scream made me spin around. Two troopers came running at me from different directions. I smashed my armored forearm into one of their faces. His helmet shattered. The man fell to his knees, howling, and crawled around on the ground, disorientated. I kicked my second opponent precisely in the chest, causing him to fly into one of his comrades and pull him to the ground with him.The fingers of the last remaining trooper tightened around the trigger.
Annoyed, I tilted my head. "Do I seriously have to explain to you how Beskar works?" I walked towards him without batting an eyelid. In a panic, the soldier fired his entire magazine at me. I stubbornly blocked out the pain. Because even if the blaster shots didn't hurt me to the point of death, they still hurt when they hit my armor. The trooper's weapon started to shake. He stumbled back in front of me.
I growled and caught up with him in two long strides "The resistance pilot" I swept the empty weapon out of the soldier's hand, it clattered to the ground "where is he!"Not a sound left the soldier's lips. I was losing patience. I roughly ripped the soldier's helmet off his head, grabbed him by his hair and smashed his head against the wall behind him "WHERE!" I yelled.
The soldier groaned in pain "Right down the hall, cell 85" a laugh escaped his lips "but don't bother." Cruelty sparkled in his eyes "His mind is shattered, it would be a miracle if he ever uttered a word again!"
I exhaled, trembling. Roaring with rage, I smashed his head against the wall with all my strength. There was a terrible crack. His skull had not withstood my rage. Blood and brain matter flowed down the wall. The trooper slid down the wall, dead.I didn't want to believe it. He had lied. It had to be like that.
Desperately, I ran down the corridor and looked for number 85 on the cell doors. I had to hurry. Because the blaster fire was getting less and less. It sounded as if Omega wouldn't be able to hold them off much longer. I stopped abruptly. I had found it. I had found Poe's cell. With trembling fingers, I pressed the button that opened the cell door.Without wasting any more time, I put my knife in the holder on my arm and ran into the room.
"POE!?" I pulled my helmet off my head and quickly let my gaze wander around the room. Tears shot into my eyes. He was curled up in the farthest corner, his fingers buried in his hair. His whole body was shaking. A sob escaped me. My helmet slipped from my fingers and clattered to the floor.
I ran to him as fast as I could and fell to my knees next to him. A tear ran down my cheek. The right side of his face was caked with blood. A trail of blood ran from his eyes and nostrils down to his neck. I could see the burn from a blaster shot on his shoulder and leg. Deep dark circles dug into his face. His usually tanned skin was deathly pale. Cold sweat stood on his forehead. "What have they ever done to you?" I breathed desperately.
At the sound of my voice, Poe curled up even more. Seeing him like that broke my heart. "Poe?" I gently placed my hands on his shoulders. "Mesh'la, it's me." I needed all my self-control not to burst into tears, but it wouldn't help Poe if I cried.
Poe opened his eyes hesitantly. My whole body tensed. The trooper hadn't lied. Poe's eyes once sparkled with joy, mischief and adventure. There was nothing left of that."Ja...Jason?" Poe raised his head weakly and looked up at me.I couldn't answer with words. I was too afraid that the anger I felt towards those who had done this to him would resonate in my voice.
Without a word, I wrapped my arms around his upper body and pulled him into a hug. With one hand I held his back, the other rested loosely on the back of his head. Horrified, I realized that he had a large laceration. His hair was wet with his own blood. From the looks of the wound, it was several hours old. I gently pressed a kiss to his temple. I could feel Poe clinging to my shoulders and falling against me. A sob escaped him. Tears dripped down his cheeks and landed with a clatter on my armor.I exhaled shakily. "It's gonna be alright, you hear me?" I murmured quietly.
With shaking fingers, I pulled a pain patch out of my belt bag and stuck it on Poe's arm. He slumped a little as the patch took effect and relieved him of the worst of his pain.I rocked us back and forth together for a moment and ran my hand soothingly through his hair. I would have loved to kill everyone here for what they had done to him. But there was no time for that. We had to get out of here while we still could.
Without further ado, I put one arm under Poe's knees and lifted him up. Reflexively, he wrapped his arms around my neck and clung to me.I took two long strides to the door, grabbed my helmet from the floor, put it over my head with one hand and ran with Poe in my arms down the same corridor that had brought me here.
I had already reached the spot where I had fought with the stormtroopers when a bang sounded in the distance, shortly followed by the dull rumble of a starship exploding. I ducked a little unconsciously. The First Order had shot down Omega and Kix. I could only hope that the two had made it out of the shuttle before it exploded.
Poe whimpered and pressed himself a little closer to me. A lump formed in my throat. I wrapped my arms tighter around Poe. "We can do it." I murmured quietly and started sprinting down the corridor again. I heard my own heart beating in my chest. It felt like I was moving in slow motion. Soon these corridors would be filled with stormtroopers again. I didn't even allow myself to think that we couldn't make it.
While I was still running, I pulled the transmitter out of my belt pouch and held it out to Poe. "Press on it and hold it tight." I asked him as I slid around the next corner. Immediately the familiar beep sounded. If there was a good time for Grogu to show up, it was now. "By the Force, Grogu, I need you. Where are you?" I thought desperately.
