Chapter Ten

Soul had no idea what he was going or where to go, but Error's body does. The portal opens up into the antivoid. Soul collapses to his knees as soon as he finds himself in the white space alone. He claws at the sides of his head, still so confused and overwhelmed. The edges of Soul's vision is dark and blurry as he panics.

What is he going to do? What can he do? Soul has someone gotten himself trapped inside his best friend. Error would surly murder him for this. Or worse! Error might hate Soul for this and never visit ever again until Soul loses all the memories of their time together. Soul thinks he would have rather died then face that possibility. Soul can't help the pitiful wine he makes, curling his knees up to his chest. The sound is distorted and guttural in Error's voice. Soul doesn't want to be alone. Error has become Soul's only lifeline.

Soul feels as if his throat is closing up. The panic won't leave. The anxiety is all consuming and crippling. He can't think of anything except for this all-consuming terror that nothing is okay and it never will be. Unable to control it anymore, Soul is further tortured by Error's own memories. He sees the hateful glares of monsters and the terrified expression of others right before they die. They want him dead. Everyone wants him dead! Soul is almost convinced someone is attacking him right in the antivoid with the blur of faces Error has done battle with. Every chip and scar on Soul's body aches fiercely.

New tears trace the old tracks on Soul's face. He's shaking all over and can't make it stop. When did he fall onto his side? Where even is he? Every time Soul sees his hands, Error's hands, another wave of guilt and fear tear at him. Soul isn't strong or very brave. He's not smart or just. Error is all those things. Error would know what to do if he were here.

What would Error do? Soul tries to swallow back a sobbing hiccup. What would Error say? Soul's rasping breaths rattle painfully in his chest now as his vision continues to darken. Error would tell Soul to shut up. Error would tell Soul to shut up and quit being a baby, and the he would tell Soul to stop breathing like a he was pretending to be a fUcKinG humming bird. Soul takes a shuddering breath that he nearly chokes on. Error would then let Soul hold his hand. Just his hand, and nothing more. Soul claps his hands together, taking another stuttering breath.

The darkness at the edges of Soul's vision starts to recede. He's not sure how long it took, but his breathing eventually gets closer to normal. The tight feeling constricting his chest eases. Soul is left exhausted as he calms down and his last few tears dry up. He feels stupid for freaking out.

What now? Soul uses the sleeve of Error's coat to dry his face. Soul is stuck inside of Error instead of randomly appearing in an AU. When Fresh took possession of the Candytale Sans, it booted Soul out and change something fundamental about how he gets around. Soul isn't even sure what's all changed yet. His aura is flighty and unsettled. Even stranger is the fact that Soul doesn't feel like Error. Everything Error is, his memories and personality, are shoved just beyond Soul's detection. They'll come forth if Soul reaches out or loses focus, but there's a distinct gap between all of it and what Soul is. For once, Soul can tell where he starts and ends.

So what now? What should he do now? What would Error do? Soul finally pushes himself up into a sitting position. He's still a little shaky and paranoid. Now that he's somewhat calm, Soul notices just how much his body hurts. Error hurts. Every little scratch on his body has gone untreated. A deep rooted ache follows Soul whenever he moves as well as stinging pain closer to the surface. The pain would be a lot worse if Error's tolerance wasn't also helping Soul. What would Error do? Error might ask Soul what he wants to do.

Soul slowly stands up to his feet. He wants to get out of Error most of all, but Soul also can't stand the idea of leaving all these injuries on his friend. Soul wants to get out of Error and heal these injuries. Soul also wants to get out of the creepy antivoid. Setting a few clear goals helps ground Soul. Focusing, Soul draws up his magic. He sends it out searching through the Multiverse in a slight thread. Not calling, but locating. Soul can only be sure of one monster who can heal. He can't remember anyone else at the moment. When Soul's light magic touches the other, he pulls back and coils the power up so as not to alert them. Soul reaches for Error's magic this time and makes another portal.

The staticky sound of Error's portals are not very subtle. Soul finds himself stepping into a cozy living room with a small adjoining kitchen. The yellow clad skeleton in said kitchen flinches at the unexpected noise and whips around to find the Destroyer of AUs in his home. Dream and Soul lock eyes and stare in surprise at one another. Soul really should have made a plan first.

Dream snaps out of it first. "E-Error!?" he gasps, forming a golden staff in his hands to fight.

"W-AIt! SoRrY, I'm soRrY! I juSt-" Soul takes a few steps closer to Dream, to do what he's not sure, but Soul cuts himself off when he trips on the floor's transition from plush carpet to tile. Dream's back hits the kitchen counters when he tries to get out of the way. The tiny kitchen leaves no room to maneuver. Soul crashes right into Dream and knocks them both over. The fall leaves Soul disoriented. For several long moments, he can't focus on what's going on.

"I'm so sorry!" Soul shouts again once he's able to speak. He feels awful for surprising Dream and then squashing him. Soul can feel the surprise, confusion, and panic. He looks around to see if Dream is still under him, but........ he isn't. Soul is sitting up on the floor in the kitchen. There's barely enough space to lay down on the tile. Error is laying in Soul's lap, unconscious and unresponsive. That's not right.

Soul holds up his hands. His hands are completely white without any of Error's scars. Soul reaches up and traces the rim of his crown while looking down at his golden outfit. Soul has somehow jumped from Error into Dream.

Dream is very different from Error. Soul finds himself forcefully shoving his feelings aside in order to address the current situation. Now is not the time to get upset. He's not supposed to get upset. Dream is supposed to be strong for those he cares about. He has to try and keep up with Ink's violent mood swings and Blue's self-worth issues while keeping up positivity's side of the balance. It's exhausting, and all Dream really wants is to have a civil conversation with his brother. Dream misses Nightmare desperately.

Who is Nightmare? Soul claws his way out of the foreign memories, trying to regain his sense of self. He shakes his head hard from side to side. It's so, so strange to feel so concerned for the people that gave Error all of his injuries. Soul tries to shake it off and focus. The wall between himself and Dream goes back up. No, he can't raise that wall completely. Soul needs Dream's help to heal Error. Searching for specific knowledge in Dream's memories is difficult. Every little thought the Guardian's ever had wants to shove itself onto Soul and bury him. Soul sits on the kitchen floor, breathing deeply with a thousand- yard stare, as he searches.

Finally, Soul finds what he's looking for. Dream knows how to heal. He knows where to start with severe injuries and how much green magic he should use. Soul hangs tightly onto that small snippet of Dream's mind and raises one hand. From his time spent as Error, Soul knows that Error's body doesn't except magic that's not his own. Soul coats Dream's magic in a thin layer of his own magic before bringing his hand anywhere near Error's injuries. After Soul was stuck in Error for a while, the Destroyer's magic got a good feel for Soul's magic. It might be enough to trick Error's system into accepting the healing magic.

Soul slowly feeds the two combined energies into a crack down Error's arm. Soul can feel Error's magic balk and start to get aggravated at the intrusion. Immediately, Soul pulls back on Dream's magic. It's now merely a trickle compared to how much of Soul's own magic is swirling around the wound. Soul can't heal by himself, but he can try to get his intention to help to reflect in the magic. Error's magic doesn't back down right away. It simmers at the edges of Soul's magic, contemplating wether to strike or not. Interacting with an unconscious monster's magic is a dangerous game. No self control is present to stop it from lashing out.

"I'm not here to hurt you," Soul says out loud. He intensifies his aura a little more. "I just want to help."

After several more long moments, Error's magic pulls back just a little after finding something familiar in the foreign magic. Soul increase the output of Dream's magic slightly. The wound on Error's arm is beginning to close agonizingly slowly. Soul tries to increase the green magic a little more, but drops it back down again when Error flinches. Soul plays this game of tug-o-war for the next two hours as he moves from one injury to the next. Each time he pulls back, Error's magic allows a little more leeway with the next attempt. Soul is only using a fraction of his own magic by the time he gets an hour and a half in. He's starting to sweat with the intensity of using Dream's magic for so long in increasing outputs. Soul shakes it off and keeps going.

It's impossible to get every little scrape in two hours, but Soul puts up an admirable fight to do so. He manages to fix all the major still-healing injuries while going briefly over old scars to ease the pain in spots that healed oddly. Soul knows exactly what hurts the most since he was just in Error's body a few hours ago. By the time Soul is exhausted and unable to heal anything else, Error looks like a decade of battles have been scrubbed off his bones.

Soul finally leans back and lets his head hit the kitchen cupboards. He sighs in relief and closes his eyes. Today has been one of the most exhausting days that Soul can remember. Even when he has to fight in the judgment hall, Soul always knows what to expect next and that nothing can really kill him. Befriending Error has given Soul something new to look forward to. Today was really scary, but when Soul got scared, Error came to save him. Error always saves him.

With that last drowsy thought, Soul finds himself slipping into an exhausted sleep.
