Chapter 28

Katie held onto Thomas with dear life. She shut her eyes, afraid of letting go.

Thomas grinned as they made it to the front door, "Don't worry, Katie. I'm gonna get you out of here in a jippy," he noticed how her eyes were closed, but wasn't fooled. "We're at the front door now. Just stay quiet like you are doing because we are going to pass your parents as soon as the door opens. Alright?"

She nodded, "Alright. Sounds good."

"Ready?"

"Yeah."

"We're off!" He opened the door and froze for a split second. He noticed that both Maggie and Nick were almost done since the couple moved slightly, which indicated that they were basically finished. He knew he had to make his next move swift, and as quiet as he can make it. He raced towards the closest bush, and prayed that no one heard him.

Once he checked to make sure the ghost was clear, he went to the next spot that allowed him to hide.

"Thomas...?" Katie whispered.

Thomas shushed her louder than he expected himself to do, and had sworn that he saw heads turn towards their direction. He froze, making it act like no one was there, and hoped that he was doing a decent job at that. He even held his breath because he was nervous of being found with Katie. All he wanted to do was make sure that she was safe. What happened to him didn't cross his mind nor matter to him.

He heard Katie hold her breath as well, and did his best to make sure her air wasn't heard by her parents. He was afraid that they might ruin their chance of escaping if they weren't too careful. He looked down at Katie, hoping that she was alright. He couldn't ask, and her eyes were closed, so he had no way of communicating with her. His only option was to ask her when they finally made it safe to the clubhouse.

Wait for it... Wait for it... Now! He sprinted towards the exit of the front yard, as if he was running in a marathon, and doing his best to not let anyone else grab the first place medal. Even though Katie wasn't in good condition for this race, it was still a team effort. He wasn't planning on giving up on her right now. He couldn't, and he wouldn't. As long as there was breath left in his lungs, he will do whatever it took to make sure that she was safe.

Come on, Katie. We are almost to safety for you. You won't have to worry about this anymore for awhile. From this day forward, I'm planning on giving the life that you deserve. I don't know how or when that will take place, but it will. He wasn't even paying attention to what his legs were doing, and where they were taking them. He didn't need to. It was as if they already knew where to go, like an automatic car that was shifted to auto gear. By the time he actually did pay attention, they were long gone from where they needed to be.

"Katie, you can open your eyes now," Thomas panted softly. He had forgotten about letting himself breathe again. He was just thankful that his arms weren't worn out yet, just him. He didn't mind a good run now and then, but it was harder when you didn't have enough oxygen in your lungs.

She slowly opened her eyes, "Hm? Where are we?"

"At our old clubhouse."

Katie didn't seem to listen as she gasped, "Oh no! They could find us! We need to get out of here as fast as possible!" She then paused herself from freaking out. "Wait... Did you say we were at the club house?"

Thomas nodded, "Yes, we are. Welcome home, Katie."

Katie looked around, and gasped once more, "I haven't been here in years with you guys... I'm surprised this place still even exists," she glanced up at Thomas. "How did you guys keep this running all of these years?"

Thomas grinned, "By the help of our friends of course."

Katie giggled softly, "You know what I mean."

"I have no idea what you are talking about."

Katie smirked playfully, "I know that you know exactly what I'm talking about, mister."

"Oh do I now?" Thomas smirked playfully back.

"Alright, lovebirds. Your little moment is ruined," Maggie giggled softly as she clapped her hands, "Yes, I just ruined your moment. Sorry not sorry. Come get your butts in here already!" She laughed as she ran closer to the club house, motioning her best friends to follow her lead.

Thomas chucked, "We are coming! Don't worry! We are on our way now!"

"You know you don't have to tell me everything you are doing, right?" Maggie turned back with a playful smile. "I'll be able to hear your footsteps."

"Not if I'm being sneaky," Thomas challenged.

"Is that a challenge, Thomas? If so, I accept!"

"What do you accept?"

"The challenge of course, you crazy dorkus!" She wanted to slap him silly.

Katie giggled as she teased Thomas, "Sounds like you got her flirting with you," she did her best to contain her own laughter.

Thomas wasn't paying attention to her teasing, and had missed it by a long shot, "Are you sure about that? I thought she had the biggest crush on Nick?"

Katie laughed, "I'm just teasing you, Thomas! It's okay to mess around every now and then, silly!"

Thomas was pretending that he was all offended, "Oh, you think this is funny, don't ya?"

"Of course I do! You should have seen the look on your face!" She kept on laughing. "I just hope you don't hate me for this."

"Why would I hate someone like you?" He rose a brow.

"Because of what I said!" Katie declared.

Thomas chuckled, "You're funny. I would never be mad at you for something like that. If I had to be honest, that was actually very clever with what you did there. I'm impressed."

Katie blushed, "Thanks, Thomas," she giggled. "I guess you could say that I tried my best to make you smile."

"Well you did an aye okay job in my book!" He held up the okay sign, though almost dropped Katie in the process.

Katie yelped until she felt a second hand grab her. A rush of excitement and fear rushed through her body. She wasn't sure if she enjoyed the rush or was tricked into thinking that she enjoyed it. She didn't care either way. All she cared about was that she was safe with her old childhood friends.

Maggie giggled, "Come right inside, lovebirds! Nick and I have a surprise for you both!"

Once they were near the doorway, they could hear Maggie call out, "In here!" She sounded impatient, anxious, and excited at the exact same time as if she wanted to show Katie something that she had no clue what about. Once both best friends entered the house, Katie gasped deeper than she ever had, which started her rounds of coughing.

Maggie worriedly ran up to Katie as if she was dying, "Are you alright?"

Katie nodded with a small smile, feeling like there was something in her throat.

"Do you need some water?"

All she could do was nod, wishing that she could just scratch the itch that was deep within. She then swirled her head around to look up at Thomas, but only ended up with slamming her head into his. Her face immediately switched colors in a blink of an eye, "Heh... Whoops! S-Sorry..."

Thomas' hazel eyes directed towards Katie in a kind and gentle matter as he gave a heartwarming chuckle, "Don't worry about it. I've done that plenty of times."

"Hitting someone's head with your own?" Katie's head tilted to the side.

Thomas mentally scratched his head, "Sometimes, yes, or hitting my head on other things such as tables or walls. You know what I mean."

Kattie attempted to laugh, but it only resulted in serious amount of pain. The pain had fully caught to her when she thought that she didn't have to deal with it for once in her life. I guess that I was wrong. It sucks that it had to come to this. She grabbed her mind out of the gutter, and forced it towards Maggie's direction. She grinned thankfully as she had given her her glass of water.

Maggie's grin was bigger than what Katie had seen it in years, and it made her feel warm inside that her best friends were happy. Though she was curious of why her grin was bigger than normal.

Did something exciting happen? Is she just happy to be giving service to someone? Or is it something else that I'm not even thinking about? I'll ask her when I can finally stop killing myself.

"Here you go!" Maggie handed Katie the cup.

Thank you. Katie mouthed to Maggie, afraid to start dying again.

Maggie giggled, "You're welcome! Anything for my best friend!"

Katie grinned as she drank her glass of water. She viewed all of the club house. It looked exactly what a home would look like. It had chairs, couches, a kitchen, bedrooms. It had it all. Memories formed into her brain, and she was glad to have something good to look back on to. Her smile grew, without even realizing that she was smiling bigger than she had in years. She even forgot where she was, but she didn't care.

One room that she made the most memories was the living room. She remembered when they were young, and how they would sneak out of their houses sometimes just so they could meet up at their little house that they created with the help of Katie's friends' parents. Though, there was one time that she was thinking in particular.

******************************************************************************

Maggie giggled as she ran to the club house. Her and her friends had planned on meeting up at the club house for a sleepover, and Maggie was excited. She brought what she needed, and was ready for the best night of her life, "Today will be awesome! It'll be much better than how my days usually are. They usually are boring or tiresome, or worse than that even."

She skipped around in her favorite red dress that she was wearing. She giggled as her dress swayed to her movements. She felt like a star to a show, which made her feel special.

Once she finally reached the door, she knocked on it, wondering if anyone had already beat her from getting their first, "Hello? Is anyone there?"

"Katie? Is that you?"

"Maggie?"

There was a loud squeal behind the door, as it seemed to blow open from nothing. Maggie's braided long, black hair shown in the sunlight that was disappearing behind the Earth. Her skin looked smooth, and she seemed to glow in excitement. She jumped up and down when she saw her best friend nearby, "Katie!!" She squealed once more, unable to contain herself.

Katie mimicked her reaction, feeling like an explosive being set off as she jumped and tackled her best friend to the ground, "Maggie!"

Both girls giggled as they helped each other up.

"Sorry..." Katie giggled apologetically.

Maggie waved it off, "It's no biggie, Katie. You know that. It's just so good to see that you were able to make it!" She clapped her hands together as if signaling her next move.

Katie grinned, "It's all because of my parents sleeping early. They seemed exhausted for some reason. They didn't have work today, and hardly did much all day like usual," she rolled her eyes slightly. "They never seem to want to do anything with me," she pushed her feelings aside. "Anyway, I'm just glad I left when I did."

Maggie noticed that Katie didn't want to talk about it, and she decided not to bother her about it at the moment. She nodded with a small grin, "Yeah, I'm glad you did too. Did they hear you at all, like your footsteps or something? I would be surprised if they didn't. I remember you telling me that they usually hear everything," Maggie was baffled.

Katie grinned, "It's an adventurous story. Would you like to hear?"

"Sure! Let's go over to the couch first."

Katie plopped her stuff onto her bed, then joined Maggie in the living room. She couldn't wait to tell her what happened, and how she escaped the dreadful demons, "Ready?"

"Of course!" Maggie jumped onto the couch, leaning forward intently at Katie.

Before any of them could continue, there was a ringing sound near the door.

"That must be the boys!" Maggie jumped up and ran as fast as she could to the door. It was the fastest that Katie had ever seen Maggie run in her life. Once the door was opened, Magie's face flustered.

Katie didn't need to look at her to be able to tell, she just knew her well enough to know.

"H-Hey guys!" Maggie grinned as she looked at her other best friends.

"Hey Mags!" Nick grinned as he held his things around his back and arms.

"Hey, Maggie!" Thomas grinned as well, having his stuff with him as well. "What's up?"

This seemed to get Maggie up to speed again, "Oh! Katie was gonna tell me a story of a daring adventure she had with the two evil demons, and how she escaped!"

Thomas grinned, "Really now? I would like to hear this tall tell. Can we listen too, Katie?" He turned his attention towards Katie.

Katie, being someone who wasn't used to so much attention, flustered herself, "Of course!" She giggled, rubbing her neck. "I would love to tell you all the tell!"

Maggie started squealing again, "Oooh! I can't wait! Come on guys!" She ran back to the living room, unable to be patient any longer. She jumped back into the couch, but had stubbed her toe on the way there, "Ouch!"

Katie, Nick, and Thomas ran to her side as Thomas was the one to speak up, "You okay? What happened, Maggie?"

Maggie giggled, "I think I ran a little bit too fast. I just stubbed my big toe on the couch. I should be fine."

Nick smirked playfully, "Should I kiss it better?"

Maggie returned the playful action, "What? Are you like my mom now?"

He chuckled, "No, I hope not."

Both Thomas and Katie couldn't help but laugh their heads off at Maggie's comment. Katie could picture Nick as a mother for some odd reason, and it wasn't a pleasant sight.
