Chapter 27 Desperation
The couple were searching for what interested them. As they did that, Maggie checked to see if Thomas was doing his part of the plan. She didn't see him, so she assumed that he had snuck inside the house.
"What are you doing?" Katie's mother demanded.
"Oh nothing!" Maggie grinned. "I just thought I heard something. I must be hearing things," she laughed softly. "You know how it is sometimes, where you mind messes with your ears and with you in general. I find it really weird how that happens."
They both didn't say anything, and only nodded.
To Maggie, they seemed really focused on their options of what they could get. Both her and Nick waited patiently for them to make their final decision. They just hoped and prayed that they will take longer than needed for Nick to get Katie out of there as quickly as possible.
Come on guys! Please don't take too long! Maggie tried not to grind her teeth together, and fidget with her fingers too much. The more she worried, the more she realized that she could blow their cover. Even if it was just by one simple movement, because a small act could change the whole game plan in seconds.

After a few minutes of searching, Thomas finally found Katie's room, and knocked on her door, "Katie, it's me, Thomas. I'm here. Is that alright if I can come in?"
There was no answer.
"Katie, are you still there?"
"H-huh? Yeah, s-sorry, Thomas... Hold on a second...
"Of course. Just tell me when you're ready for me to come inside."
"Alright. I-I'm almost..." he heard blankets russell about. "Done... You can come in now."
Thomas slowly opened the door to find Katie underneath her blankets. He saw how her room was a mess. Many objects fell to the floor, and some were smashed. Clothes were splattered all over the floor, and he looked away to focus straight at Katie's face. He ran over to her, worried, "Katie, what did they do to you?"
Katie was covered in water stains, blood, and anything else her parents decided to do to her. She coughed as if something was stuck in her throat. She winced, and Thomas could tell that she was trying to not scream out in pain. He looked into her eyes, wishing that he could take her pain here and now. He wished that he could never let it happen again, and felt terrible for breaking his promise once more. The words forced his mind to its knees as they repeated over and over again. I won't let this happen to you again. I promise.
Bullcrap! This did happen again! At least I can help her now. Helping her escape is the most important out of any mistakes I've said or done, and I'm planning to keep my promise this time: To free her for at least a short while.
He thought quickly, "Let me get these ropes off of you. Hold on..." he paid all of his focus on untying every rope that prevented her to move around freely.
He felt Katie's eyes look inside his soul as her soft voice spoke shakily, "Th-Thomas...?"
"Yes, Katie? What's up?"
Her eyes filled with water, "I-I'm sorry..."
He looked at her softly, "Sorry for what? You haven't done anything wrong, Katie."
"I-I have... I-I haven't been a very g-good f-friend... t-to you... and to the o-others... A-All of those t-times I-I r-ruined o-our friendship..."
Thomas looked at her and smiled, "Hey, you didn't ruin anything, Katie. None of us are mad at you for anything that you've done. It wasn't your fault. You were stressed and pressured by your parents way too much. It's nothing to worry about. I promise."
Katie didn't stop tearing up, afraid of the worst to come. Her mind focused solely on the things that could happen, not that do happen. Focusing on the present has always been difficult for her, and she knew that it would always be difficult for her. She had no idea if she would ever be someone that would be positive, especially with knowing of what she has gone through. Her memories haunted her, and she felt like she couldn't escape them, even if she tried. She rubbed her wrists and ankles, hurting from all angles.
Thomas smiled down at her, "Let's get you out of here."
Katie forced the blankets on her, blushing.
"What is it? Don't you want to get out of here?"
"O-Of course I-I do, Thomas... I just need to change into a new pair of clothes first i-if you d-don't mind... S-Sorry..."
He grinned, "No! It's totally fine, Katie! Just hurry as fast as you can, and tell me when you're done, and I'll help you get out of here."
"Alright," she called out weakly once more.

Katie put on some clothes, and couldn't help but smile slightly at Thomas. She enjoyed his company. To her, he always made her feel special and important. It was something that she believed that she did not deserve. She glanced at the door every now and then, wondering if he was still at her door. As she finished, she opened her mouth to call out, but fear struck her. What if he left me? Would he ever do such a thing?
No. He wouldn't He said he was going to help me get out of here. I'm surprised that I can even stand, even though I have trouble walking. "I'm done! Y-You can come in n-now!" She felt her voice slowly going back to its normal strength. Her hair swung to her side as she watched the door slide open. She was welcomed by a warm smile, and she couldn't help but flush red and want to hide somewhere.
"Hey, Katie."
She became more nervous as he met eye to eye to her, "H-Hey, Thomas..." she waved.
He chuckled softly as he waved back, "You look good as always."
She blushed, "Th-Thanks."
Thomas blinked and chuckled, "Sorry. That probably sounded weird..."
She giggled, "That's fine. I knew what you meant. Thanks."
"Are you ready to go?"
Katie nodded, "Yeah, are you?"
"I'm just ready when you're ready," he grinned.
"I'm ready," Katie giggled. "Let's get out of here. I don't wanna be here any longer."
"Can you walk?" Thomas walked up to her.
Katie sighed, "We'll just have to see. I mean, I did better than I thought when I walked to my closest. I have no idea how strong my legs are right now."
"Was it hard walking towards your closet?"
"A little, but I didn't have too much of a struggle, I don't think."
Thomas nodded, "I'll be here for you if you need someone to lean on someone. You can always lean on me if you don't feel strong enough to stand."
Katie smiled and nodded, "Alright. Thanks, Thomas."
He chuckled, "Don't thank me yet. We haven't even left your house yet."
"Can I thank you once we escape this place?"
He chuckled softly, "To your heart's content."

"Yay!" Katie giggled. She felt like a child again for that brief moment.
Thomas chuckled once more. So adorable. He held her hand gently as he walked as slowly as she needed to go. He didn't mind, as long as her parents didn't return from Maggie and Nick's distraction. Nick noticed how weak Katie looked. She shook every now and then, but he noticed how she was doing her best to make do what she can handle.
Katie sighed softly, turning towards Nick, "I'm so sorry I'm not as fast as I normally am. I don't think we will make it in time if we walk at this rate."
Thomas grinned as a perfect idea formed in his head, "Do you want to go for a ride?"
Katie rose a brow, "What kind of ride?"
"One where I get to carry you out of here safely? How do you feel about doing that?"
Katie smiled while blushing once more, "I don't mind doing that," she quickly corrected herself. "Of course, if it's no biggie for you," she laughed awkwardly. "If it's too much then I won't do it. I'll just walk if you want me to," she cleared her throat. Why do I have to make this even more awkward than it already is?
Thomas couldn't help but smile and chuckle once more by her comments, "Don't worry. It's not a big deal for me. Besides, you need as much rest as possible. I have no idea how long you have been going at this with your parents. You deserve a break from them."
Katie felt too flattered to say or think of anything smart to say to him back, "Thank you, Thomas. You have no idea how much that means to me."
"I know," he grinned. "That's why I said that. You deserve the best life out there. Not this trashy dump of a life. Katie, you are worth the whole world to me," he carefully picked her up. "I hope one day you will be able to see that."
Katie blushed more than she could actually handle, "Thomas! Stop it! I'm red as a tomato now!" She covered her face with her long sleeves.
He chuckled, "That's what I'm aiming for. I find it kinda cute and funny when you get all shy and blush," he started walking out of the room. "C'mon. We can talk about this later. Right now, let's get you safe and sound."
******************************************************************************
"Have you two decided your final decision yet?" Nick asked curiously at the couple.
"We have a few things in mind," Katie's mom replied as she looked over at her husband. "Though, we're curious how much it would be if we bought these things together."
Maggie grinned, "Thankfully, I can help with that. What do you two want to buy?"
"I would love a lot of this jewelry on here. Let's see... Some of these necklaces are fabulous. I can't choose which ones I want the most!"
Maggie laughed softly, "You can buy all of them if you can afford-" she was cut off by the older woman.
"Then I'll buy all of them! Only one problem."
Maggie rose a brow, "What's that?"
"I have no idea how much they add up together. I don't have any sort of calculator on me right now. Would you be a dear and help me with that?"
"Of course! I would love to help!" Maggie grinned as she pulled out her phone, and looked up at her, "What are the prices of the jewelry that you want?"
"$39.99, $27.99, and $39.99."
Maggie calculated the numbers into her calculator, "That equals to $110. Do you have that amount of money on you?"
"Of course I do! I never keep my money around!" She laughed. "That would be pointless! Besides, we're rich. This money is nothing to us! Thanks to my husband and his amazing job of course!"
"Does your husband want anything?"
Katie's mom glared at her husband, "Do you want anything, dear? This young lady asked you a question!"
He grinned, "Yes, I do actually."
"What is it?" Nick asked, finally speaking up.
"There is this pen that interests me."
"A pen?" His wife scoffed, "Why would you just want a pen?"
"It's not just any ordinary pen. It's a self defense pen."
How much is it?" Nick asked, wanting to break up the arguing.
"$29.97."
"Is there anything else that you would want, or would that be all?"
"Yes there is. I'm wanting to get this Prime Labs Prime Test pill bottle. They claim that they get you stronger and faster if you take them. I would love that."
Nick nodded, "How much is that?"
"$19.99."
Maggie quickly added up the total, "Those things together would be $50. If I added everything you both asked for, it will be $160. Do you pay with paper money, card, or check?"
"Card of course!" The older woman replied dramatically. She gave Maggie the card, "Here you go. Do what you will with it. Just give it back!"
Maggie nodded, "Of course, ma'am." Are you guys coming out or not? After Maggie was finished paying, she handed the card back to the woman. "There you go! Your things will be delivered to you shortly! It was nice doing business with you."
"Likewise," the man nodded at the two.
Maggie glanced at Nick, hoping that their friends made it out in time.
"We must be going now," the mother replied. "You two should leave as well. Any extra time on our property is foul play, and will lead you both in jail."
Nick rose a brow, "That's not how it-"
"It does with us. Now go! Now!"
Nick put his hands up in defense, "Okay, okay. We're leaving! Don't worry!" Both him and Maggie started leaving the lot. They were going to the meeting place that they had planned on meeting with Thomas, and hopefully Katie as well. Once they made it safely to their clubhouse that they had helped built as kids, both waited for their friends return.
Maggie looked at Nick, "Do you think they made it out in time?"
Nick shrugged, "I don't know. I hope they do. We'll find out once he arrives here."
"If he arrives here you mean," she sighed. "I just hope that they are both okay."
Nick chuckled, "Don't worry. I bet they're fine and coming here right now."
Maggie didn't believe him, "How can you be so certain?"
"Thomas isn't one to give up that easily, Mags. He never gives up, and finishes only when the job is done."
Maggie nodded, "I know. I shouldn't have to worry so much, but I do anyway," she turned towards him. "You know that."
Nick chuckled, "That's one of the things that I find cute about you."
