Chapter 11 Unanswered Questions

"Hello again, Katie. I know that I promised that I would leave you alone, but there was something that I needed to tell you. Two things, actually..."

Katie looked up at Karen in curiosity, "What is it?"

"The first thing is something I offered helping the doctor with since I was coming to visit you anyway."

Katie nodded, showing that she was paying attention.

"He told me that his kids were going to come and see you. One of his sons had told him that he had met you at school today. Do you know if you know him at all?"

Katie thought about it for a moment as she looked down, then looked back up, "I-I think so... I did meet a young man today, but I'm not sure what his name was."

"Do you know his name?"

Karen nodded of a surety, "Yes, actually. He's talked about this son a lot. He told me how he moved to a new school, and how he was planning on making new friends for a time. His name is John."

Katie's mind flickered faster than a dragonfly could flap its wings, "Oh! I think I remember that name! I accidently bumped into him as I was leaving my class for my car. At least... That's what he introduced himself as... Unless my memory is somehow already rotting from remembering names," she explained with a small chuckle.

Karen smiled softly as she listened to Katie, "Do you know him well?"

Katie's head swifted side to side rapidly, "No. I only met him today, and for a brief moment too," her brows scurried slightly. "Though, I have no idea how he knew that I was here in the first place," she then started getting more cautious as time went by. "Do you think... he was stalking us...?"

Karen smiled, "I highly doubt it, even though it's possible. As I've mentioned before, his father works here at the hospital. Who knows, he probably asked someone about where they were taking you. Regardless of his reasons, I think it's nice of him to come to visit you, even if you two don't know each other too well."

Katie was curious, "Do you know what he's like?"

She laughed softly, "From what I hear from his dad, he's unique, and kind to everyone. He prefers to treat others with respect, and I've been told that apparently there are many young ladies that crush on him constantly. Though, I've been told that he has no idea of what's happening. To me, he sounds kind of innocent at some parts, though is smart for his age."

Katie rolled her eyes mentally when she heard that there were many women who had a crush on him. Usually when that happens, the guy is either a playboy, or just a jerk in general. She couldn't help but ask, "Is he... you know... someone that takes advantage of people? Just because someone might respect and treat others nicely, doesn't mean that they have another side to them," Katie pointed out.

Karen sighed softly with a simple nod, "I can understand your concern. I have a good idea. I'll let you decide for yourself if you'll willing for him to come visit you. We will keep you for a night, to make sure everything will turn out fine, and we will let you go. I know we said we were going to let you go today, but we decided that it would be best for you to be here for a little while longer."

Katie nodded, "I understand. Thank you for everything again, Karen. You have made today better than it had been in a long time."

Karen grinned. I'll ask her another time, when she is ready. I'm not willing to scare her at all with my intent of this question. I want her to make the full decision in the end. Though, I know that I will need to earn her trust to have a more effective way of getting an answer from her, whether it be a yes or a no. I don't want to seem forceful either. I'll think of something. I always do. She smiled at Katie, "Goodnight, Katie. Sleep well."

Katie grinned, "Thank you. Goodnight."

Karen smiled as if she was putting her own daughter to sleep, "If you ever need anything, just call and I'll come as soon as I can during my shift. Whether if my shift has ended or not, don't be afraid to ask for anything that you need, alright?"

Katie nodded as she shifted in her bed to find a spot that seemed more comfortable to her own fitting, "Alright, I will."

"Good. Sleep well."

"Thanks, you too," Katie then remembered something. "Wait!"

Karen turned to face her, "What is it, Katie?"

"You said you had two things to ask me. What was the second thing?"

"Oh, yes... That. I have just realized that the question I was going to ask you would have been too soon to ask... It involves trust, and I don't expect you to trust me immediately,"

"Since you don't know me," Katie finished for her.

Karen nodded, "Yes. Exactly."

Katie nodded, "I guess that makes sense why you changed your mind. Will there be a time where I will be able to hear your question?"

Karen smiled, "I would like to hope so. Until then, we'll see," she turned off the light as she left the room to let Katie rest.

Katie didn't feel tired. She just laid in the peaceful darkness that surrounded her. She breathed deeply at a constant rate. At times, she even felt her heartbeat racing once and awhile. She shifted again, having trouble with feeling fully content with the position that she was currently laying down in. She grunted softly, staring where the television was hung. She couldn't see it too well from the lack of light, but she knew where it was exactly without a doubt. Though, her attention wasn't on the flat screen tv. It was about something more.

Why do I get visitors all of a sudden? This never happens. Why now? What's so special about now? I don't get anything, and I wish that this would have happened sooner. Then maybe I wouldn't be as hesitant about all of this like I am right now. Maybe I would deal with this better. I... I don't know anymore...

Katie's eyes scrolled up as she reached for the stars, as if her eyes were able to see through a hollow ceiling. Her dark eyes found of way of glowing, even if the light was fading away into nothing. She gave off a huge sigh, dazing off into the darkness, but with no particular thought in mind. Her head tilted slightly as if it was too heavy to carry anymore. As her wonderland formed by the minute, her eyes were the next parts of her that felt heavy, as she drifted off into sleep.

Katie searched her surroundings, but everything looked odd and confusing. Nothing seemed to spark a memory, and nothing felt... familiar. There was a crowd of people on her left that was in the distance. They were laughing, and cheering for something that was unknown to Katie.

On her right, she noticed a town... A village even, with people that lived in each cottage house. To her surprise, there seemed to be no cabin without an owner. Though, these cabins were treated nicely, like any cabin should be.

Then her full attention to what was straight ahead. The cabins seemed to grow from as far as she could see, "These must be where the wealthy live..." she stated to herself out loud. She walked forward a few steps, before suddenly freezing in the snow; which she now noticed. The ice cold snow went up to her ankles, and as she looked down, she realized that she couldn't find her own two feet anywhere. Without a doubt, she knew that they were still attached, but one might think otherwise if they had noticed Katie in her current state.

"Do you really think that they will win?" a voice called out, which made Katie's body halt in her location.

Her curiosity got the better of her, as she looked up to see if this voice was talking to her or someone else. She blinked as she didn't see any sign of a person talking.

"You bet your guts they will! Don't doubt that they won't do it either! They will do anything in their power to get what they want, and hopefully what they deserve!"

"They don't deserve anything beyond belief! Are you so blind into thinking that these people will treat all of us fairly? You are a fool to think such things! I cannot believe your hersey!"

"Hersey?! How is my own belief a heresy in your eyes?

"You know exactly why. He does not approve of your beliefs on this matter, you know that."

"That's true, but that doesn't make me a heretic. What would make a heretic would be if I rebelled against our cause."

The voice who Katie had identified as a man, called; the voice that was identified as another man, a heretic sighed in frustration, "Very well then... As a friend, I won't tell this to anyone, for your sake..." The next words seemed to stab him the most. Though, I hope you know that if I catch you saying any of these words again, I will turn you in."

His friend looked unfazed by his words as he nodded, "I understand..."

"Good. We must pretend that this conversation never happened, deal?"

"Deal."

"Let's shake on it," the first man's arm moved in a 90 degree motion, as it aimed for the second man.

His friend copied the same motion, as they grabbed hands in a proper fashion; binding the agreement together.

Katie rose a brow, "That... didn't make sense at all... My brain hurts now," she gasped. "Wait... I just realized something... Why were their voices easier to hear than the others? I mean... It sounded crisper than it actually should have been. Is it supposed to be some sort of sign for something, or better yet; someone? Also, why do I keep talking out loud to myself?"

Another conversation perked up her interest, and this time, she saw a glimpse of who actually was speaking this time.

"Get out of here you... you... traitor!"

There was an older woman shouting at a younger girl that looked to be around her age, or even older.

"Why am I the traitor? I haven't done anything wrong!"

"Because you have wronged me! Do you not remember?"

The young woman shook her head, "No, I do not. How have I wronged you, grandma? What have I done to make you hate me?"

"You have dishonored your family by not following our rules that we have taught you! We thought dearly that you would follow in our family's footsteps one day," the older woman sighed. "Though it seems that that day will never come... I'm sorry... Casandra..." the door slammed right on the young woman.

Katie noticed Casandra was unmovable, as if she was frozen in time. Katie couldn't even tell if she was breathing or not, or if Katie herself was frozen. She dared to move to the girl, but when she neared her, her hand went right through her, "Oh gosh! Did I kill her, or am I a ghost? Oh no..." she gasped, placing her hands over her mouth out of shock. "Wh-What's happening...?"

"Nothing. This is all in your imagination?"

Katie spung around, but couldn't trace the voice, "Who said that? Where are you?"

"I'm someone you know. Well..."

"There are a few people that I know well," Katie pointed the obvious to herself out loud. "Do you expect me to guess until you tell me what's right?"

"That's an option."

"Will you actually tell me if I get the right answer correct?"

"That will depend."

"On what?"

"On how long this will actually take."
