PHOENIX

My alarm blaring had me groan, forcing my eyes awake. Rubbing my eyes, I realised I slept through the first alarm and cursed. I wasn't sleeping well; the thoughts of my mate in another room that wasn't mine were killing me.

Her room was below mine, and despite being soundproof, I tuned into her through the bond. She had slept peacefully whilst I lay awake, overthinking. The only thing to calm me was the sound of her breathing as she slept safely in her bed.

I dragged myself out of bed and walked myself into my en-suite. Stripping off my boxers, I turned the shower on and waited for it to warm up. I brushed my teeth whilst I waited, and then grabbed a towel from the cupboard by the door.

I made quick work of washing myself, having to leave out shaving for today, since I was so late. It's what I get for staying up till the middle of the night thinking too much. Even the glare of my phone as I tried to play a game didn't help blur my vision.

I dried off as much as I could before wrapping the towel around my hips. Making my way into my closet, I stared longingly at the empty rails to the right. One day, I hoped, they would be full of her clothes.

I chose a white button-down shirt with grey trousers and a black belt. I rolled the cuffs to my elbows and checked my form in the large mirror. Passable for today, I think I mainly had paperwork and a video call.

I slipped into black shoes and grabbed my phone as I made my way out of my bedroom and down the hall. I entered the passcode to leave my floor and descended the stairs quickly.

When I came to her hallway, it surprised me to not smell her in her room. I checked my watch to see that it was me who was late since it was after seven. I started my mornings at seven lately so I could finish earlier enough to watch the sunsets with Nova.

As I hit the bottom floor, I caught a glance of her through the hall window, walking round the side of the house. I smiled to myself as she chewed on an apple, happy she was still eating something. I reached my office a couple of moments later to find Charlie already standing, laying out papers.

I greeted him politely, knowing how grumpy he could be in the morning. As if to validate my thoughts, he responded with a gruff grunt.

"I need you to sign off on these pack referrals. I've already written out the forms and fill in the basic details." He mumbled.

"For?" I asked, pulling out my chair and sitting down.

"The two girls who found their mates wish to transfer to their mate's pack." He explained, pushing it towards me.

I nodded and scanned the names. "Got it."

"Also, you need to decide what is happening with your mate's step-brother. He has asked to stay here three times now; I think he's getting impatient. They leave soon."

"I know," I grunted. "I've had more important matters to deal with. The rogue attacks are hitting our neighbouring packs. They took five girls Tuesday morning from Blue Stone. Three more from Wolfsbane two weeks prior. It's getting too much of a concern, but King Edward won't let me do a damn thing yet."

He shook his head. "You need to push it harder, Phoenix. You're his nephew-you can do that, no one else can but his family."

I grimaced at the thought. "Don't you think I've tried? It pains me every day to know innocent girls are being taken and forests are burnt to ash. Wolves have tried to follow and lost the scent!"

Charlie sighed. "We got to do something. It's getting too close to home."

"I know," I growled, shaking my head. "I just need leverage... anyway, how are the travellers settling? They're due to leave Sunday."

He nodded. "Yeah, all ready to go. You just gotta sign the papers so I can send them to their relative packs before they go. And sign the one on your brother-in-law, yeah?"

I rolled my eyes at his laugh but nodded my head. "I will do them once I have coffee."

He chuckled, the mood slowly lightening. "You and your damn coffee."

I smirked at him and turned on my computer. "What's Pollux been up to?"

He furrowed his eyebrows. "The lycan blood?"

I nodded and waited tentatively for him to answer me.

"He's kept to himself, mostly. He doesn't talk to anyone, just walks the grounds. Why?"

"Something feels strange about him. Ares wants me to lightly interrogate him, to get to know him." I explained.

Charlie hummed and clicked his tongue. "I'll see what I can dig up. The girls no doubt gossip about him. Seeing a bloodline like his is a rare occasion, I'm surprised he's looking for a mate."

"Me too. That's one reason I don't trust him."

"And the one about him looking just like the male version of your mate?" He teased.

I growled, but he held his hands up in defence. "I'm just saying they look alike. Same eye colour."

I huffed, but nodded my head. Of course, I had thought about it, how strikingly similar they were. He took an interest in Nova right away, his wolf trying to overpower her. But somehow, she held firm, whether she realised it. Something was strange, but until I could dig up more about her history, I was at a crossroads.

I have been researching, of course, in hopes of finding where she came from. They found her on a wooden log in a river at the estimated age of three. Her memories were gone, and she didn't even know her own name. They believe it was because of trauma, but something is telling me it's more sinister than that. But I needed to find out more. For her own sake, she deserves to know who her family was. A black wolf with those green eyes is nothing to take lightly. I knew it the moment I saw her.

It's one reason I cannot claim her, the other being the whole mate law set by King Edward...

Lycans were the first ever wolf shifter created by the Moon Goddess herself around five hundred years ago. They were the ancestors of every werewolf. A lycan bite can turn an ordinary human into a werewolf, and any offspring that werewolf shall have will be a werewolf too. Able to turn into a furry beast at will. It is how we started.

Lycans were made to rule and guide us, but we outnumbered them after two hundred years and forced them to share their reign. Hence, how alpha blood came to be. From each original werewolf that the lycan family had turned, they chose a bloodline they believed to be the strongest. Therefore, creating the king, and following behind were the King's packs; Blood Moon, Half Moon and Full Moon.

And so, the lycans retested to their own paradise. I have not heard of one outwardly allowing themself to explore wolf territory. They kept to themselves, choosing to be at one with nature and arts than anything else. They never engaged in wars, merely watched from the sidelines. However, their blood could heal another ten times better than an ordinary wolf. But it took a tremendous toll on their own health; making their own body's healing capability weakened in return. So, they stopped joining in about two hundred years ago when we took control.

Another few reasons that Nova's personality stood out to me was for all of this. I needed to find out the truth, and Pollux may be my answer.

When I knew for sure, I could not wait to tell her. To discover her identity so that we can finally mate. But I couldn't tell her yet. I didn't want to break her heart if it wasn't true and put a price on her head. She's already so kind and gentle, with a fiery spirit beneath her innocent eyes.

I couldn't mate her without knowing the consequences, as sharing her soul could change us both and it's too risky. I was at a catch-twenty-two. To be with my mate and risk it, or wait until I knew she'd be safe.

I couldn't lose her.

I just can't let us become a mated pair without knowing how long to wait to mark her. I would do it right now if I could. Take her right on the field and make her mine.

Ares grumbled in agreement, my knuckles cracking under the tense force. A sudden unease overcame me and I shrugged my shoulders to get rid of it.

"I need to schedule a meeting with him," I announced.

"With Pollux? Why-

"Alpha!"

My door slammed open, and I turned to see a man panting for breath.

"Border breach north side! Mind link is down!" He panted.

I froze in my attack, my mind running to my little mate. I tried to reach her, to no avail; just her life force. I tried Sean next, then the twins, even the northern patrol wolves, but came up blank.

I slammed my chair back and stood to my feet. "Where?"

"North-eastern! One hundred yards from checkpoint C! But Alpha, they attacked. Gamma Sean is critical and-

I had frozen, an erratic panic setting in my heart as I cut him off. "The girls he was with-what of them?"

He hesitated, and I turned to look at him from over my shoulder. His eyes widened in fear, his heart racing in his chest, and I already dreaded the answer. My stomach dropped to the bottom of my feet, and I found my breath quickening.

"The girls." I gritted.

"They took them." He whispered.

Within a second, I had shifted in my office and charged my way to the border. My mind was in a panicked haze, not knowing where Nova had gone was tearing me apart. I arrived at the border to find wolves tending to Sean, a fire nearby. Nova and the twins were nowhere in sight.

I saw red and growled, my wolf forcing me over the border and into the burning heat of the forest. Flames were building in the trees, the smell of gasoline being the source. I growled, charging my way through to find the scent.

I couldn't pick their scent up anywhere. It never crossed the border.

The sudden dulling of the mate bond had Ares stagger to a stop and let out a gasp for air. I transformed back, clutching at my chest as the sensation overwhelmed me. Smoke filled my lungs, and I forced myself back onto my land to breathe right.

When I fell to the floor on the right side of the border, I gasped in pain as my chest felt on fire itself. It constricted and Ares gave way to a painful howl. The bond had vanished within an instant, like a snip of an elastic band. I can't feel her anymore.

She couldn't be dead. She can't be.

Not Nova.

She wouldn't give in so easily.

She had a stubborn streak.

I lifted my head to survey my surroundings as the flames grew. This needed to be handled.

"Fire control is on its way, Alpha." One wolf beside me announced.

I nodded, pulling myself to my feet. My hand clawed at my chest, the dull ache reminding me she was gone. Within the time it took me to stand, I felt some mind links come back.

Charlie's wolf approached me and bowed its head. 'We'll find her, Phoenix. They severed everyone's links somehow. Lasted about three minutes.'

Magic. I spat. The bastards have a witch somewhere.

I had to remain vigilant. In order to find her, I couldn't run off like a madman and tear down the forest. As much as I wanted to, it would get me into no end of treaty problems. I had to be smart; I had to think. I needed time, but I had none.

I needed Nova.
