anxious

adjective ~ feeling it showing worry, nerves or unease about something

I could tell we were getting close when I felt the familiar hum of energy from Raven's magical wall. Our original plan was to bring Gaia with us but she had decided to teleport when she 'saw' us arrive, due to her older age.

Some of the wolves in our pack got disorientated the closer we got, and I had to remind them to stay on our course. We headed further North following my markings. The louder the energy hummed, the slower we crept until I could see a slight shimmer ahead of us.

That's it. I muttered.

Phoenix nodded silently and called off the advance. I was suddenly startled when shimmering magic appeared from next to me, darkness surrounding it. With a flash of light, Gaia appeared with a small smile on her face. She flicked her wrist and the portal curled in on itself and vanished.

"Hello dear." She smiled at me and ran her fingers through my fur. "You've grown so well."

I let out a gruff bark, so as to not be so loud. Wolves around me shuffled nervously as they knew we were getting closer to the action. The sun was slowly setting, meaning we had arrived in good time.

Phoenix shifted and stood bare beside me. A small yelp of surprise left my mouth but he merely chuckled and rested his large hand on my head. I shook him off in distaste, not wishing to be petted. He quirked an eyebrow but retreated his fingers.

"We're going to hide out here until the sun goes down. Gaia, have you covered our presence?" He spoke quietly.

She nodded. "I have. It shouldn't belong. My daughter's magic is strong, I can feel it drawing me in."

Phoenix grimaced and licked his lips. "Let me know if anything changes, Gaia... Stay quiet team."

We grunted our replies of agreement, a small hush falling over us. Many wolves fell onto their stomachs, intently focused on their surroundings. We were about five hundred yards away from the border, so there was plenty of ground between us to not be overwhelmed by the magic or be seen by any patrol.

Phoenix had shifted back to his wolf fur when I began to pace. His large head nudged me and glanced towards a break in the trees. I turned to where he was gesturing to see the sun setting on the horizon.

I sat down at the sight of it, forcing myself to focus on the colours. His wolf sat beside me, nudging his head into my neck. A deep rumble came from his throat, his wolf trying to calm my nerves.

We sat a while longer, his fur warming my own. We blended as one, our black fur matching each other perfectly. I could feel the mate bond thrumming, our hearts beating in sync. His presence was helping me to calm down my nerves until they were a faint hum.

Once the sun disappeared beyond the trees and the sky grew dark, the last half an hour flew by. The moon shone in the sky, the day being marked as done. Phoenix ran his head along with mine before he stood, taking the warmth with him. He shifted to his skin form and went to stand beside Gaia.

"Ready to move closer?" He asked.

She nodded and Phoenix turned to gesture a select few wolves forwards. I got up from where I sat and made my way over to where they gathered. Phoenix caught my movement and gave me a low grumble.

I'm coming with you. I stated.

He paused, scanning me. 'I don't want you to get hurt.'

I huffed and dug my paw into the soil. I've been here before, I am coming. I'm not standing on the sidelines.

He let out a small huff but nodded his head. His hazel eyes glanced around the group and Gaia shuffled on her feet.

"Very well." He spoke. "Let's move towards the border. Gaia, you say she will notice us?"

Gaia nodded. "She will sense us. It's part of the magic she has cast. Try not to stray, it will force you away from the closer you get and you cannot see it."

I frowned to myself; I had seen it with my own eyes. It didn't repel me at all, more like hummed at our closeness. I wonder why.

We all began to walk forwards and I was glad that Phoenix decided to put some shorts on before we did. I didn't want to spend my time staring at his bare ass, much to Cel's displeasure.

We moved quietly, every step calculated so we didn't draw attention to ourselves. The birds fell silent in the trees, their nightly flight paused from developing. Small animals scurried into their hides, owls curling in on themselves. It was like they knew a large threat that was coming, and they hid from the danger.

The energy grew stronger, a loud thrumming that vibrated in my chest. It echoed through my skull, pounding and demanding attention. Some of the wolves beside me began to shake their heads, their hackles rising in defence.

Eventually, we came to a stop about five metres from the border edge and I shivered as I glanced at the all too familiar area. The border was vibrant and shimmered with power. I could not see anything beyond the border just trees and grass. The same as everyone else, no doubt.

Phoenix turned to Gaia. "What do you feel?"

Gaia hummed and stepped towards the border. Cel whined in hesitance, a bad feeling creeping over us. We didn't want anything to happen to her, she was a kind, gentle person.

"Raven." She called, her voice strong.

My feet dug into the soil and I glanced at my brothers beside me. Sean and the other ranks stayed back; I could make out their forms behind the shrubbery.

The border began to shimmer and splitter, the sparkling effect turning to white fire. I watched in amazement as it slowly began to lower, folding in on itself. It revealed Raven, her small delicate form was stood non-wavering.

Her dark eyes narrowed at our group but widened when she caught sight of the elder witch nearby. Her hands begin to shake and her heart became erratic, pounding against my wolf ears.

"Raven." Gaia breathed.

"Mother? What are you doing here? Why did you come?" She spoke, causing wolves to shuffle anxiously.

Phoenix stepped forwards and I followed him hesitantly. I wasn't leaving his side.

Raven's dark eyes snapped to mine suddenly and they narrowed. "I told you to not come back."

I huffed and scratched at the ground.

"We are here to save you, all of you," Phoenix spoke. "Nova lead the way."

Raven's eyes turned to him, scanning him from head to feet which made a small growl of jealousy leave my throat. She smirked a little, crossing her arms.

"You are going to war." She scoffed.

"Innocent people are being hurt." He growled.

Gaia stepped forwards which cause the border to close in on itself as Raven stepped back.

"Raven, please. Don't allow this to happen any longer."

Raven grumbled, eyes darting between Phoenix and her mother. "I told you not to come for me Mother, the risks are too high..."

"Risks?"

Gaia shuffled and gave a small nervous smile. "The future. I've seen many futures of today, it can go any way."

"And in most of them, you die!" Raven snapped.

Gaia sighed. "You mean more to me than my own life Raven. It is worth the risk-"

"Don't. Don't go there." Raven closed her eyes, a large sigh filling her lungs that she slowly let out.

I felt my skin crawling, Cel becoming on high alert. I rose to my feet, my hackles raising with the growing threat. I glanced around to see no one had noticed it. I caught the eye of my twin, his green eyes narrowed and hackles raised as much as mine.

'Do you feel that?' He asked.

I do. Something's coming. I nodded.

I turned to look towards the witches but Raven was already glancing between our two wolves. She frowned, dropping her mean stance to one of defence.

"You shouldn't have come. Especially both of you. They'd gut you alive for your blood." She shuddered.

Phoenix growled and took a step forwards. "That will not happen."

She shook her head, arms wrapped tightly around her. I noticed the wall closing, the gap growing smaller. No one else seemed to see the wall, except me. Maybe Pollux did? Maybe it was a Lycan thing?

I growled as the anxious feeling grew stronger, my ears twitching with every move beyond the border. How could no one else hear this?

They're coming. I gasped, shaking my head at the thundering noises.

Phoenix turned to frown down at me. "Who? Who's coming?"

"I'm sorry I'm so sorry." Raven cried, tears forming in her eyes. "They-they know everything. They-they have tabs on me all the time-I-I'm sorry."

Phoenix growled a large guttural sound that made the lesser wolves shake and drop their heads.

Within an instant, the thumping grew loudly and pinpricks ran along my skin, my fur standing on end. I could see them, charging toward us. They were in human form, armed with weapons of silver.

"Raven..." Gaia cried, reaching for her.

"I'm sorry Mother."

I nervously glanced between them and the approaching men. I looked up at Phoenix to see him hesitating the attack. The men that ran towards us looked determined, guns, knives and swords in their hands.

It was happening all out of our plan. We had no plan left since they had found us.

This was it.
