Chapter IX

Rafaela and I were standing outside of a fancy restaurant watching Jane and Ricky having lunch, their table was in the middle of the restaurant and far from the window so I couldn’t see them properly.

“Let’s get closer” I stepped out of the car and started to walk towards the entrance, Rafaela held my arm and made me stop.

“What do you mean closer? If we got in there they will instantly see us, their table is facing the door.”

“So?” I shrugged of her hand and started walking again.

Before she could stop me again I was already walking through the entrance, to this day I don’t know why I did that. Clearly I wasn’t thinking straight but when I saw Jane and how she looked exactly like before, I felt the sudden urge to just talk to her and be near her.

And, of course Rafaela was right. The moment I stepped my foot on the restaurant, Jane saw me. But as I said earlier, I couldn’t see them from far. when I got closer now I saw that they were obviously madly in love with each other. How their bodies were leaning forward to each other, the eyes and how they were filled with nothing but utmost lust for the other and their smiles just showed how happy they were.

I froze.

I didn’t know what to do, I didn’t know what to expect. Of course I should have expected this. They are engaged for god’s sake! What the hell was I doing here? And there’s no space for me here.

Rafaela pulled me out of my thoughts.

“Dave? Dave I am talking to you. Dave? Earth to Daavveee.”

“Yes, yes Raf. What?”

“What do you mean what? You are standing still in the middle of the route and Jane has been calling you for minutes”

I couldn’t just go up to her and start talking about my love for her when she was this happy with someone else, she will see me as pathetic and would never take me seriously.

Without thinking, I held Rafaela’s hand, intertwined our fingers and walked to their table.

“What a coincidence! Hey Jane.”

“What a small world, Hey Davidoo”

She called me by the nickname she made for me, we were once joking about my name. How it didn’t go with any cute nicknames and what she should call me. Once we were babysitting a child of her friend and the baby kept calling me Davidoo, we have no idea how she got that from my name, but it kind of stuck after that.

She got up from her chair and embraced me in a hug, Ricky stood up in the same time to greet Rafaela.

Rafaela and Jane were looking at each other waiting for me to fully introduce them to each other.

“Oh, sorry babe. This is Jane” I said to Rafaela.

She didn’t reply at first, she kept looking at my eyes trying to search the meaning of the babe calling thing. Jane offered her hand to Rafaela and said nice to meet you.

“And Jane, this is Raf my girlfriend.”

“Rafaaelaa, I knew you looked familiar. Weren’t you guys best friends in high school? I know we didn’t meet before but David used to mention you nearly in every high school memory. I saw you in pictures. You are the same Rafaela, right?”

“Ah, yeah. I am her”

“I didn’t think you guys would get together”

“Neither did I.” Rafaela said and literally was shooting daggers at me.

“I am sorry, this is Ricky. My fiance.”

“We actually met, sweetie. They came by to visit you two days ago.” Ricky said.

Stupid Ricky.

I talked right after he said to try and justify the visit. “Oh yes, we knew you were in town and thought to pay a visit.”

“Would you care to join us for lunch?”

Rafaela’s POV:

To say the lunch was catasrophing would be an understatement. But not to Dave anyways. He never was able to see things clearly.

I didn’t understand why he had to fake that we are dating. We could said that we were just friends who happened to be out for lunch.

I hate it when Dave is using me to get his way without even considering my feelings.

The lunch was basically Dave trying to prove that we are the better couple, whenever Ricky said something flirty to Jane, Dave would do the same. Ricky held Jane’s hand, Dave would try to make me eat from his hands. Jane would look at Ricky with dreamy eyes, Dave would pull his chair closer to mine. He tried to hold my hand again but I shrugged his hand away.

I hated this.

It just felt like high school all over again. When David used to use me to meet new girls.

What pulled me out of my thoughts was that out of nowhere, Dave excused himself and got up and left. With no hint of telling me where is he going. At first I thought he left for the restroom, but that thought seemed a little bit shaky when fifteen minutes passed and he didn’t return.

Ricky ended his meal and got up for the restroom as well, in the meantime Jane and I had a little chat.

“I don’t know if you know this, but David and I used to go out together.” Jane said. She didn’t mean to put it on my face or anything. She definetly didn’t want to make me jealous. That all happened anyways. But, she just didn’t know how to start a conversation. And there’s no ice breaker other than that.

“Oh yes, he did mention you once.” I didn’t want to tell her that there is nothing going on between us. It made me feel like if I continued faking this, it may actually come true. “But, he doesn’t talk about his past a lot. He even didn’t tell me why you guys broke up.”

I had to ask. The curiosity got the best and worst of me.

“Oh, I don’t know if I should tell you that. It’s not my story to tell.”

Before I got the chance to ask Jane what did she mean by that, if it’s not her story then whose it is? Ricky returned to the table and looked at me.

“I don’t know what happened, but David isn’t in the restroom.”

He left me.
