Chapter two
Moonkit had made it. She was outside the camp.
She took in a deep breath. The air here was so much fresher than inside the camp, and it carried the scent of heather and rabbits, along with another, unfamiliar, scent.
"Come on! Race you to the rock over there!" Mistkit squealed before running off.
The kits raced off, arriving at the rock at the same time.
"That was fun!" Cloudkit said, "What should we do next?"
A deep voice growled from behind them.
"Who said that?" Moonkit turned around.
"I did, duh!" Cloudkit said, "I was the one who said 'that was fun, what should we do next?'"
"No... it's..."
Suddenly a russet creature appeared in front of the kits, its long, pointed face showing sharp teeth.
"It's a fox!" Moonkit shouted, remembering a tale about this creature told by her grandfather.
The kits dashed off, each of them heading in a different direction. Unfortunately for Moonkit, the fox chose to follow her.
"Please help me!" Moonkit screamed, "Anyone!"
Suddenly, a voice spoke to her.
Don't fret, little kit.
"Who are you?" Moonkit asked. The voice seemed to come from all around her.
That's not important now, follow my orders.
"Uh... OK?"
Ahead of you, there's a waterfall, jump into it.
"What? Are you crazy?"
Just jump, hurry! Do you want to be fox food?
Moonkit skidded to a halt at the edge of the waterfall. It was flowing into a large pond with stars reflected in it. The water was way too deep for a kit to survive if it fell in. For Moonclan's sake, even Blizzardstar will drown if he fell in!
But she had no choice. If she didn't jump, she would be torn to pieces by the fox. Moonkit took a deep breath, and jumped.
Everything was suddenly engulfed in cold water, she flailed her paws, desperately looking for land. Then, the last of her air ran out, and everything went black.
