Chapter one
"Moonkit! Moonkit! Wake up!" Mistkit prodded her sister with her paws.
Moonkit opened her indigo eyes and yawned.
"Cloudkit's already outside! Today will be our first day outside the nursery! Come on!"
Moonkit looked around, it was barely dawn, and her mother, Lightcloud, was still snoring peacefully in her nest.
"But mother's still-" she protested.
"Come on!" Mistkit squealed, and Moonkit was dragged through the nursery entrance. She winced as her shiny black fur caught on the brambles outside the den. But the moment she stepped out, she thought she would never want to return to her nest ever again.
The camp was in a huge valley, with a narrow stream running down the center. She could see the various dens of the camp. The warriors den, with its walls weaved out of bramble, the elders den, covered in heather, the apprentices den, made out of gorse, and the leader's den, carved out the tree stump known as the clan log, where the clan meetings were held. Everyone says it's the remains of what was one of the only trees on the open moorland. But none of those were what captured the kits' attention. Moonkit, Cloudkit, and Mistkit raced toward the camp exit, squealing with excitement to see the vast world outside the camp, where their mother had all her exciting adventures. However, Silverwind, who was their father, and Cinderlight, happened to be guarding the entrance and blocked them.
"Woah! No going outside camp yet, little kits!" Silverwind said.
"You could get hurt out there!" Cinderlight said as she blocked Cloudkit from dashing outside, "Why don't you go to the elder's den for a story, I bet your grandfather Fogpelt has an exciting tale for you!"

Moonkit sighed as her grandfather told tale after tale of his hunting expeditions and border skirmishes. It had been exciting when it started, but after a while, it felt like he was never going to stop. She could tell that Mistkit and Cloudkit were trying to be polite and act excited, but their yawns and sighs gave away their boredom.
"And then I gave that Flameclan warrior nasty bite he won't forget, and he ran off like-"
Suddenly, an orange she-cat walked into the den, followed by Silverwind and Cinderlight. The orange she-cat was holding a bundle of herbs, while the other two were carrying wet moss.
"You shouldn't be talking too much, Fogpelt, you need to give your lungs some rest." The orange she cat said as she dropped the bundle of herbs, "Take these."
"No need to fuss, Amberleaf, I'm perfectly fine." Fogpelt said.
"We all know that your lungs haven't been well since the fire, now take these herbs."
As the adults talked to each other, Cloudkit motioned Mistkit and Moonkit to follow him out of the den. "If Silverwind and Cinderlight are in here, that means no one is guarding the entrance!" he whispered.
The other two kits realized that he was right, and they eagerly followed him to the camp exit.
