Chapter 3 Dmitri

I was beside myself; after the call from Jack, I was numb with fear and staring at the always-spotless kitchen that was now in complete shambles. I was disorientated for a good long minute before Jack's presence snapped me out of it. From the look of the kitchen Sam fought and fought hard. The thought almost put a smile on my face. That was before the slight scent of blood reached through my foggy brain. Already deciding Mady would be of little use in this situation, I stepped forward to hunt down the source. Usually Mady was strong and focused, but when it came to Sam and young children her heart lead and not her head.

The main source of the drying blood was easy to sniff out, a knife stuck out from under the fridge. Picking it up by the halt with two fingers and bringing it close to my nose, I announced, "Not Sam's. She got one. That a girl, baby." Even though she was missing, and who knows what was happening, I knew in my heart she was alive and she left them something they can use to find who attacked her. "Male and human," Inhaling deep I added, "Three males..." I caught another scent that tore my heart in two. On all fours, crawling low smelling the floor, I found what caught my attention., "Shit. There's a drop of blood here, it's Sam's, but just a drop." Then again that's all we found of Katie too.

Looking up, the first person I saw was Nickoli, shoulders tensed, fear, hate and death in his eyes, if I looked in the mirror I knew I would see the exact same thing in my own face and eyes.

Nickoli looked around the room, noise twitching, collecting the scents; tilting his head to the side, inhaling in deep as he walked over to the sink. "What is that? It's sweet, can anyone else smell it?" I watched Nickoli move closer to the stove, bent down to pick up a cloth and put it to his nose, "Fuck. Its chloroform."

"The team is on their way here. Dmitri, I know you have the best nose, but I think under the circumstances it's best if you step out while they're here," Jack said from the doorway. Staring down at me with a, "don't argue with me look," he could have gave an order, but I knew I being given a chance to prove that I could handle this. Even though I wanted to argue with Jack, leaving the room would give me more pull later on.

Nickoli must have come to the same conclusion because he left right after I did without a word from his leader.
