Chapter 48

Aizawa once said that I look like my mother. Midnight and Kitsune have also made a similar comment. It may seem like it, but if you have ever seen my father, you can't exactly say that for certain.

I hate it. And I hate that I have his forsaken eyes. "Wait, so you want us to work with this Villain's kid?" Rock Lock demanded, his hands slamming on the table as he stood. His burning glare remained true to me. "Who's to say she's not working with him?"

I almost laughed at that statement. Working with him? If I wanted to work with him I wouldn't have ran away.

If I wanted to work with him, Kei and I wouldn't try to kill each other every time we saw each other.

"She's been under both Midnight and myself's care for years. She has had no contact with Claude and the only contact she's had with Keiichi were in fights alongside her classmates." Kitsune came to my aid.

Honestly it's nothing I haven't heard before from police officers who are aware of the situation.

Even Kitsune herself has accused me of being a double agent for my father. "The Red Reaper. How come his identity hasn't been made known?" Ryukyu questioned my mentor.

Kitsune sighed, looking back at the photo behind me. "Because revealing him would destroy many businesses and harm countless civilians. Besides, we have no concrete proof. Just suspicions and Nozomi's, Kiriya's, testimony. He's one of the wealthiest men in the world, we simply wouldn't put it out unless he was arrested." She explained.

It was strange to hear her talk so calmly when this is the one thing she's not stable about. It's true though.

At the moment, he's untouchable. How could he not when he comes from a line of Villains. Villains who have been doing this so long that they can remain untouchable.

The Nozomi's have been a terror, unbeknownst to the rest of the world. What a croc.

Ugh, I can feel Izu's and my classmates stare. Not just them. Aizawa. Now that's a whole can of worms I don't want to talk about. But I can't exactly let him think my mother turned Villain.

At least not willingly.

"At any rate, we need to find their whereabouts asap. From there, Kiriya will be able to make a few possible blueprints and what exactly to expect. Nighteye." Kitsune pressed the button and the sound of the screen changing sounded.

I hesitated before glancing back wearily. There was a map on it, not his photo. Relief instantly filled my and my shoulders sagged a bit.

Something that didn't go unnoticed.

"Right. That is the issue. Since we don't know how far their plans have gotten, we have one chance to strike when it counts. To that end, we have found groups with connections to the Hassaikai and Claude's, or land owned by the Hassaikai. And made as thorough a list as possible. I would like you all to investigate each place and narrow the list down to possible locations."

One of the Heroes looked at the table. "So that's why you asked minor Heroes like us. The Heroes here and the localities where they work are the same. Heroes were chosen who know the areas. For someone who was All Might's former sidekick, you sure are careful."

That's true. Nighteye sure is thorough. And very, very, careful .

Huh? Ugh, Fat Gum looks upset again. He's not exactly subtle.

"This is too roundabout! While we're takin' our time, that little girl, Eri, is probably cryin'!" He shouted in outrage.

So? She's probably been crying for a long time. She can cry a little bit more since we'll be rescuing her. Let's see, how old will she be?

I was about four when I stopped crying completely. So it's probably the same for her.

Tools don't show tears after all. That's the motto.

Nighteye remained composed despite the restlessness of the Heroes. "We cannot become All Might. That's why we must put together our analysis and predictions and try to make the possibility of saving her as close to 100% as we can."

Gran Torino nodded in agreement, eyeing the large Hero. "We can't rush. If we make a big fuss about this and then don't get her, this could be the kindling for something bigger. Like how Stain's capture became line an ad for the League. In fact, that might've been the intent behind distributing Quirk-Destroying weapons to those hoodlums." He inputted.

But even that wasn't enough to calm down this large Hero. "You're thinkin' too much! If you keep sayin' stuff like that, you won't be able to do anythin'!"

Hm.

He sure is intent on saving this little girl. Is it because she's dangerous to us? If it is then I get it. But if it's because they want to save one girl then . . . why couldn't they save the children of other organizations?

What makes her so special?

No. It must be because she's a threat to our society. Yeah. That's it.

Aizawa raised his hand. "Um, can I ask a question? I don't know how your Quirk works exactly, Sir Nighteye, But if you can predict the future, then why don't you just use Foresight to see our futures? If we continue like this it seems a bit illogical."

He does have a point. It would honestly make things easier on us.

Nighteye's glasses reflected only the light from the ceiling, making it difficult to see his eyes.

"I . . . cannot do that. My Foresight requires a 24-hour interval between activations. In other words, I can only use it on one person for one hour, each day. In addition, it's played in my mind like a flashback. Please think of it as the ability to watch a film of someone else's life for an hour after activation. However that film is all from the perspective of that person. All I can see is that person's actions and a little of their surroundings."

That's a strange Quirk.

There were never any Quirk stones like that, which is odd considering he'd definitely want an ability like that.

"Well that should be enough to let you find out a lot though. What do you mean by saying you can't do that?" My teacher questioned.

It's always hard to get a read on him and what he's thinking. It's always been that way.

What's he thinking about?

Nighteye brought his large hand to his face. "What if in that person's near future, death . . . just a merciless death was waiting?"

Is that what he's worried about? Everyone is going to die sometime. That's just normal.

It's not something you can just stop. No, there's something behind that. Did he by chance see someone he's close to death?

Wait, he was All Might's sidekick. And a loyal one too. Could it be he saw his death? If that's the case then it's probably a trauma. And he's probably more than aware of One For All.

Death is the fate of every single being on this planet. And that goes double for a Number One Hero.

"My Quirk should be used only after we have already drawn out the highest probability of success when it can be used to ensure our victory. It shouldn't be used haphazardly when there are still so many uncertainties."

Not necessarily. You're being far too cautious.

Then again you need to be if you're going against a group supported by him. "What?! But death is information too! We could put together a plan to avoid it!" Rock Lock shouted at the Hero in charge.

Again, Nighteye remained calm and composed. "It isn't the same as fortune telling. I have no conclusive evidence that it can be avoided."

Huh? He's being really stubborn about this. While Rock Lock tried to convince him using it on him, Nighteye finally lost his composure. He shouted no. The pain and regret in his demeanor is plain to see and I almost sighed.

What a waste. It's not like he can prevent every death. It coincides with life. It's natural.

Even the other Heroes couldn't probe him further with it. They pity him.

Ryukyu sighed. "Anyway, let's do this. There's a girl in trouble. That's the most important thing."

Eh? The girl? But . . . that's not true. It's the collapse of society. They wouldn't . . . they wouldn't gather this many for one girl.

They've never done it before. It's only because she's a threat to them. That has to be it.

Otherwise . . . it's confusing.

Nighteye stood, regaining his composure once again. "Confirm the girl's whereabouts, and take her into our protection with the most accurate information we can get as quickly as possible. I'm counting on all of your help." He concluded the meeting with those words.

Finally the unpleasant talk has come to an end.

Aizawa looked over at all of the students. "You all do back downstairs and wait."

Kitsune shook her head, grabbing my shoulder. "Nozomi is coming back with me. We have some work to do." She informed my teacher. And for a moment, I saw something else in his eyes.

But just as quickly as it was there it's gone. She's going back to my last name again. I wonder what changed to make her call me by my first name.

"As her teacher, I'm going to need to make sure she's okay. Her arm, she was shot, was she not?"

Ah, does he know something? Kitsune bit her lip and averted her gaze.

This was the perfect chance for me to stop thinking about their strange need to save one girl. And it would keep them from asking me about my father.

But Izu . . . Izu must be in emotional turmoil. But so am I.

I'm in no condition to be worrying about him at this time, not when my head isn't fully there. "Sorry Sensei. I gotta help out. Izu."

My childhood friend looked over at me, the despair in his eyes for not being able to save the girl, Eri, is clear.

The corner of my lip moved up, just a bit. "You're a Hero. So smile."

He seemed a little confused by my words, and while it's not really much, I know he of all people can change the fate of a pitiful girl.

He's done it once before.

~

"Ugh, Eraser Head is pissed." Kitsune complained, running a hand down her face.

She had stopped the car just in front of my school, some students are still walking in. "Well I haven't been to classes in days. Of course he's pissed. He's my homeroom teacher." I removed my arm from the sling, not minding the slight pain that shot through my arm.

He had gotten angry and threatened to go to the board and the commission about Kitsune's behavior.

Meaning her unwillingness to disclose our work with him and preventing me from returning.

Not that I minded much. Luckily the four who are working on the work study are forbidden from talking about it.

Meaning they can't ask me about Kei or my father. "I know. God it's embarrassing being scolded by a former classmate." She whined.

Yeah, fellow U.A. alumni. They have had interactions, it's expected of classmates. And especially since they both were close with her.

My mother.

I shoved the sling into the console and stepped out of the car. "Well if I don't go now, he'll only scold you more. Later." With that half assed goodbye I closed the door and headed inside the school and to my class.

The moment I opened my classroom door, pink arms wrapped around me. "Kiri! It's so unfair you got to miss school!" Mina immediately whined.

My eye twitched a bit at her dramatics and Kaminari, Jiro, Yao-Momo and Sero walked towards me. "You've been gone because of the work study right? Must be something important." Jiro noted. It has been a while since I've returned, but this is a little much.

The heavy gazes of four specific people distracted me from the welcome backs of my classmates and this time I did look over at them.

The work study student had rather serious looks on their faces.

Not the happy go lucky smiles they always use to have. The harsh realities of the world have finally reached them. And I don't know if that makes me relieved that they're closer to understanding me or if it upsets me that they couldn't remain naive just a bit longer.

There's no need for them to have that heavy of hearts yet. They're still kids.

"Alright, get off of me, Aizawa-Sensei is gonna be here soon." I said as I pried Mina's arms off of me. She grumbled her complaints but I just ignored her and slid into my seat.

Like I thought, Aizawa soon walked in, his eyes immediately going to my seat. Probably to see if he'd have to dig a grave for Kitsune's career.

No, she'd be able to work another day without Aizawa threatening to snitch on her. Just like that classes began.

Most of which I paid no attention to, my mind just wandering off as I thought about the upcoming battle. My personal battle will be against Kei.

Take him in, hand him over to Kitsune, and they'll use him to get to Claude. They promised I wouldn't have to personally see him. I can't. I just can't.

Kei is easier. He's the key and I'm the only one who could possibly get him. All Might is done. He's the only one who could take them all down, but he's done.

None of the others can, at least none of which I have seen. Kei isn't an easy target to take down, and while he's Claude's main tool, he's not the only one.

There are four others that are ridiculously strong and are on par with Kei, if not stronger. And Claude is on a whole 'nother level.

Brilliant in battle, physically and mentally. Strong, master of weaponry, martial arts, stealth, tactician, intelligent, and as fast as the wind.

He's perfect. In the most terrible ways.

Honestly, I'm not even sure if they can take him down. He's untouchable.

After regular classes we went out to the training ground to do the physical aspect of our schooling. Starting with climbing up a side of a cliff, the mountain aspect.

Which is something I've been doing since I could walk. Training and all. Nozomi's have to be the perfect weapons afterall.

What took me by surprise is that Izu, Kirishima, Ochako, and Asui were the ones to come up after me. Their moves have improved dramatically.

So their internships are paying off. Unfortunately it also took away their cheerfulness, their very somber. They're quiet. Too quiet.

Even the others have noticed.

More than anything I wanted to try and comfort them, especially Izu. But my thoughts were ruled over by Claude. What can I say to them? To him? When I never told him about my family. That they're Villains.

He . . . he might feel like I betrayed him. I didn't mean to, I just . . . it's not my favorite topic. I don't really have the fondest memories of my childhood.

I like to believe my life didn't start until I met the boys. Only then did I feel any sense of happiness. Of belonging. I felt alive.

Before meeting them all I knew was fear and heartbreak.

When lunch came I dipped out and waited in the classroom. I opened one of the windows and hopped up, sitting on the frame as I let the gentle wind caress my skin.

Peaceful.

"Figured you'd be here."

Well that was nice while it lasted.

I looked over to see Aizawa standing at the door, leaning against it. Ah yes. How to explain this situation. "Well, I'm here." I shrugged, looking back out.

It's actually a nice day. Too nice. It's kinda pissing me off honestly. Here we all are drowning in conflicted and confusing emotions and there it is. All cheery.

So annoying.

Aizawa sighed and walked over, sitting down on a desk not too far from me but far enough where I'd have space.

Silence.

I waited for him to speak. To ask something. But he didn't. I don't know if it was for my well being or if he didn't know what to say. But I had to say something.

For her.

"She's not a Villain y'know. She's not like him." I finally spoke, still looking out.

I assume he's staring either at the ground or the whiteboard. We have that in common. "She only married one." Aizawa said, his voice careful not to show what he was feeling.

"She didn't know at first. And she didn't want to. She hates him. And everything he stands for." My throat tightened, keeping the rest blocked in.

I felt his gaze on me finally. I still didn't meet it though. The only reason I'm telling him even a bit of my past is because it's something she had always wanted to do.

I can't bear him thinking that my mom is anything like my father. "Then why did she?"

I took a deep breath and looked upwards at the clouds passing idly by. The words fighting to get out of me. "She didn't have a choice."

The only choice she had was to protect everyone she held dear, even if it meant sacrificing herself. Allowing him to have her. And to use her to further his criminal career.

"She's not a Villain. She's the only good one of us. She wanted to be a Hero. So don't think of her as a Villain."

She's not. She gave everything for everyone. My mom was an amazing woman who took care of everyone else before she took care of herself.

She'd smile and make you feel safe, special, loved. She was all that is pure. Kind of like Izu. So it'd be painful for anyone to think otherwise. Especially Aizawa.

My teacher didn't say anything. For a moment I didn't think he would. But after a few minutes, he spoke.

"I never did."
