Chapter 28
"There's only one week left until the final exams. You all are studying properly, right? I'm sure you already know, but it won't just be a written exam. There's also a practical component. Make sure to train your minds and bodies at the same time. That's all." Aizawa-Sensei told us as he left.
Ugh. It's not so much as I'm dreading the exam, I am because it's boring, but it's summer that has me down.
I don't do well in heat. And mosquito's flock to me.
It's my least favorite season.
"I haven't studied at all!" Kaminari and Ashido shouted. Although Kaminari's scream was more urgent and frightful and Ashido is way too laid back for her rank in the class. She laughed, not a care in the world.
Kaminari grabbed his head tightly. "With the sports festival and internship, I didn't study at all!" He cried, doom surrounding him.
Everyone began talking about it, obviously nervous since they're lower in ranks.
Mineta smirked, an air of arrogance about him. "It'll be tough since there's a practical exam too."
Oh, he placed tenth if I remember correctly. "T-Tenth on the midterms?!" Kaminari and Ashido shouted simultaneously.
Ashido pointed at him. "And here I thought you were one of us!" She shouted accusingly.
"Guys like you are only likeable if they're dumb! Where's the demand for this?!" Kaminari is just as upset as her.
"The world I guess." Mineta said smugly. "A-Ashido, Kaminari! L-Let's do our best! We all want to go to the training camp together right?" Izu tried to cheer them up.
But he's fourth in the class.
Iida nodded and held his hand up. "Yes! As class rep, I also have high hopes that you'll all be moved to action!" He added.
He placed second in the class.
Todoroki and I walked over to the two. "It's pretty hard to fail if you just pay attention in class." Todoroki said. He placed sixth.
I crossed my arms, standing with them. "It's really not that hard in general. Just scan the books." I shrugged.
I placed fifth in midterms. I do pretty well in tests.
Kaminari held his heart, turning away from us like we were too bright.
"Be careful with your words!" He rasped out as if in pain. "Even Kiri." Ashido cried. Huh? Should I be insulted?
Ah, but I do always ask to take a failing grade. But that's in group activities. I don't like working with others.
"You two, I may be able to be of assistance with the class lectures." Yaoyorozu offered with a smile. She placed first in midterms.
"Yao-momo!" The two cried in bliss. She looked down, gloom surrounding her. "I can't help at all with the practical though . . ."
Oh, she must be realizing she has no clue when it comes to hand to hand combat. She focuses only on her Quirk, just like Todoroki.
All she needs is a little confidence and practice.
It's not that bad. Once you realize it then you're a step closer. "I'm not one of those two, but can I join too? I'm having some trouble with quadratic functions." Jiro asked, walking to Yaoyorozu's desk.
"Sorry, me too! How are you with classical Japanese?" Sero asked, clapping his hands in apology.
Ojiro walked over to them as well. "I'd like to join too. There's a bunch of stuff I don't get." The three got closer to her. "Please!" They asked in unison.
Yaoyorozu's eyes twinkled as she looked at them in joy. "Everyone! Yes of course!" She stood fast from her chair and threw her hands in the air happily.
Ah. that's different. It fits her better then miss know-it-all
The three in front of her cheered as well, feeling their grade is safe.
Yaoyorozu clasped her hands together. "Then, let us hold a study session at my residence this weekend!" She decided.
Ashido quickly rushed over. "Seriously? I can't wait to see your house!" She grinned widely.
This just made Yaoyorozu even happier, like a child with a new toy. "Oh, in that case, I must tell mother and have her open the hall!" Huh?
Hall?
"You never had friends over have you-mpf!" Todoroki quickly covered my mouth.
"Just let her have this." Hm?
Ever since the Stain thing, he's been more talkative and hangs around us a little more.
It's odd. But good for him.
Yaoyorozu looked over at them excitedly. "What kind of tea are you all partial to? In my family, we always drink Harrod's or Wedgwood, so if you have a preference, let me know!"
I knew she was a rich girl but this is a little ridiculous.
I don't have a clue what kind of tea those are.
She kept on going, her happiness level rising. "Of course you can trust me to help you study too! I will definitely show you how I can help!" She assured gleefully.
Wow. this is the most I've heard her talk that wasn't explaining a problem in our work in Hero Classes.
Different, but good. Everyone else is enjoying her mood anyway.
Ah. I walked over to Kacchan who is stewing in anger. Kirishima beside him.
"Kacchan, want to study together? I don't like physics." I stated. I mean, he is third. I usually study with him or Izu, but it seems Izu will be studying with Iida and Uraraka.
So I might as well study with Kacchan to make him feel better. Also he's way better then me in physics and science.
Kirishima smiled at me then Kacchan. "Well, looks like you have two students!"
"Shut up! Be prepared for me to beat it into you!" He shouted. I smirked and Kirishima grinned. "Looking forward to it." We answered.
Classes went by and soon it was lunch. I sat between Izu and Todoroki, across from Iida.
They talked about the exam, but I just focused on eating. I forgot to eat dinner last night and I don't even eat breakfast. I'm starving.
As Izu was muttering something, someone knocked their elbow into his head, making Izu nearly drop his food.
What the?
"Oh, sorry. Your head was so big that I accidentally hit it." My eye twitched in annoyance.
Ah great. It's this kid. "You're from Class B! Um . . . Monoma!" Izu shouted.
I hate this kid. "I heard you guys met the Hero Killer. Just like at the sports festival, you guys in Class A just have all the attention, huh? But that attention isn't because people have high hopes for you. It's because you keep attracting trouble, right?"
Everytime he opens his mouth I want to punch him.
"Oh, that's scary. Someday the rest of us might also be caught in the trouble you bring and become victims as well. Like getting curse by the god of pestilence!"
I grabbed my loaf of bread and stood, shoving it in his open mouth.
"Sorry. Your mouth is so big. Looks like my bread just fell right in." I shrugged. Uraraka and Hagakure snickered from their seats.
Monoma's temple throbbed in annoyance and he quickly took it out. "You-!" He was interrupted as Itsuka karate chopped his head.
Monoma stiffened and began to fall. Itsuka grabbed his tray as he fell to the ground in a heap.
"Monoma, that's not funny. Don't you know what happened to Iida?" I looked down at Monoma's unconcious form.
I nodded in approval. "Nice work Itsuka." I complimented, making her beam. "Sorry Class A. This guy's heart's just kinda, you know." She placed his tray down and grabbed him by his shirt, pulling him up a bit, but he's still out of it.
Well at least he shut up. "You guys were talking earlier about how you don't know what's gonna be on the practical exam for the finals right?" She asked.
I blinked and looked over at my group. "Were we?" They all kind of fell at that.
Itsuka sweat dropped but chuckled. "Kiri . . ." Uraraka muttered, sitting back up.
"Well, it looks like it'll be combat against robots like in the entrance exam." Itsuka told us. Huh? Those things?
That's lame. "Huh? Really?! How do you know?" Izu asked her. She pointed to herself with her free hand. "An upperclassman friend of mine told me. It's kind of cheating though." She admitted.
I looked up thoughtfully. "It's not really cheating so much as using your resources." I stated, to which Izu agreed full heartedly.
He then looked down, going into what I like to call the Izu Zone.
"That's right, I'm sure gathering information ahead of time is also apart of the test. I see, I should have asked an upperclassman-" His muttering habit surprised Itsuka who just met him.
I quickly placed my hand over his mouth. "Izu, only in our class. You're scaring Itsuka." I said in a mono tone.
Izu jumped, realizing he had begun to mutter excessively. He quickly apologized to her.
"Are you an idiot Kendo? We had information advantage! This was our chance to get ahead of the detestable Class A!" Itsuka chopped his neck, making Monoma pass out again and grabbed his tray, dragging him away and to their table "They're not detestable." She scolded.
She glanced back and smiled. "Kiri! We should hang out sometime." She called before returning to her table.
Hang out? I don't usually hang out with girls. Really I only ever hang out with Izu or Kacchan.
What do normal girls do in their free time?
"She's like the big sister of Class B, huh? Kiri-Nee, you have a nice friend." Izu smiled at me. I blinked.
Friend? Itsuka's just someone who I worked well with at the festival. I think it's more respect than friendship. Probably.
Lunch soon finished and we returned to classes. Once school finished for the day, Izu told everyone the information Itsuka gave us.
Kaminari and Ashido are excited because they can't control their Quirk well with people.
Idiots. "It doesn't matter if they're people or robots. They're the same if you beat 'em up, right? What are you idiots talking about it being a cinch for?" Ah-ah.
There he goes. "Who're you calling an idiot?!" Kaminari and Ashido turned to Kacchan.
"Shut up! If you need to control your Quirk, the control it, Idiot! Hey, Deku!"
Oh boy. Kacchan turned his intense gaze to Izu. "I don't know if you've figured out how to use your Quirk a little or what; but you seriously keep rubbing me the wrong way."
Hm? Is it because Izu copied his moves? Or is it because he didn't learn any combat from Best Jeanist?
Whatever it is, he sure is intense. "I don't need another half-assed result like at the sports festival. At the upcoming finals, we'll get individual scores, so we'll see who's better whether you like it or not."
He pointed at Izu, his eyes as fierce as always. "I'll beat you with an indisputable difference! I'll kill you!" That's what you always say.
He turned his gaze to Todoroki next. "Todoroki!" Ah. He said his actual name. That's the second person in this class. Impressive. "You too! And Kiri!"
I sighed, shoulders sagging. "I didn't even do anything." I complained.
But Kacchan's intense gaze didn't falter. "Since you're actually trying, we're competing again!" With that he stormed out.
What the? I'm not trying in anything!
As if reading my mind, Uraraka smiled. "I think he means when you won in saving All Might." Ah. That.
But even so, it seems Kacchan's getting . . .worse. I frowned, scratching the back of my head. "This is going to be a long week, isn't it?"
And it was.
Like we promised Kacchan taught me and Kirishima at a diner. And by teach, I mean he yelled and kept on hitting us with a rolled up notebook.
Well, more so Kirishima then me since I understood most things.
When the written finals came around I answered most questions with ease. I got caught up on a couple of physics questions, but the memory of pain as Kacchan struck me came back, as did the formulas.
The three days of written exams went by in a breeze, and then came our practical exam.
We made our way to where Aizawa-Sensei told us in our Hero costumes.
However once we were there, I realized that this exam might not be as simple as I thought.
In front of us is a group of our teachers. Who are Pro-Heroes.
"Now we will begin the practical exam. Of course it is possible to fail this exam. If you want to go to the training camp, then don't make any stupid mistakes."
I really hope this isn't what I think it is.
Please don't let it be what I think it is. "I expect that you all have gathered information ahead of time and have some idea of what you will be doing."
Ah shit.
"We're fighting robot warriors like at the entrance exam, right?" Kaminari asked excitedly.
Those robots weren't really warriors, but the kids about to be crushed so I decided to keep my mouth shut.
"Fireworks! Curry! Test of Courage!" Ashido cheered as well.
They're both about to be crushed.
Aizawa-Sensei's scarf moved around but he didn't even blink. Suddenly the principle popped out.
"Too bad! For various reasons, the exam will be different starting this time!" He spoke cheerfully. Aizawa-Sensei looked bored though.
"Principle Nezu?!" Our classmates exclaimed.
The little principle hopped down onto the ground, off of Aizawa-Sensei. "From now on, we want to focus on person-to-person combat and Hero work, and stress teaching that is closer to actual fighting."
He pointed to us. "So, we'll have you form teams of two, with one of three, to fight against one teacher!" He revealed.
I kind of figured. Ah man, this is going to be a pain.
Everyone began to murmur worriedly amongst themselves.
"In addition, the pairs and who each pair will be up against have already been decided. These were determined at my discretion based on various factors including; fighting style, grades, and interpersonal relationships." Aizawa-Sensei began.
I paled considerably. Interpersonal . . . relationships? He didn't!
"So here they are: First, Todoroki and Yaoyorozu are on one team, and they're fighting me." Aizawa-Sensei said, a sadistic smirk on his face, as is the other teachers.
"And Midoriya, Bakugo, and Nozomi are the team of three."
I sighed as the two jumped. I stood between them and they looked at one another in shock as I slumped.
I saw this one coming. "And their opponent . . ." A large figure landed in front of us in a flashy entrance.
Ah hell no.
"I will do it!" I pursed my lips tightly together.
It's natural the group of three go against him. But he's the Number One Hero. We don't have a chance against him. And then there's going to be our shotty teamwork.
Lack of considering our complicated relationship.
We might just fail. "Work together to beat me, you three!" We looked between one another.
And by look, I mean Kacchan glaring and Izu's anxious look. We're going to end up in the infirmary.
He can literally snap us in half with a huff and a puff. We're not going to be able to work together, we're going to get broken bones, we're going to be bleeding a lot, we are so going to fail.
And us working together . . . it'll most likely strain our complicated relationship to a point of no return.
But there is a small chance it'll mend, just a little bit.
I really hope it's the latter. I really do.
They announced the other groups. Sato and Kirishima are going up against Cementos.
Tokoyami and Asui are going against Ectoplasm.
Iida and Ojiro against Power Loader.
Uraraka and Aoyama are against Thirteen.
Kaminari and Ashido are going up against the principle.
Jiro and Koda are against the loud Hero, Present Mic.
Shoji and Hagakure are against Snipe.
And then Mineta and Sero are fighting Midnight.
Yeah, those two are not going to make it.
Luckily our match will be the last one, but it doesn't make me feel any better about it. "The time limit for the exam is thirty minutes!"
The principle held up a pair of handcuffs. "Your objective is either to put these handcuffs on the teacher or to have one of you escape from the stage!"
Capture or escape. Escape is the ideal way out of this, but there's no way Kacchan will go for that. We're going to have to fight.
I don't care, if Kacchan is fighting, I'm not leaving him. It's All Might! He could kill him on accident!
"That's right! Your decision making skills are being tested! But with these rules, you're probably thinking the only choice is to run, right? That's why we had the support course make these for us!" All Might revealed odd wrist cuffs.
Are those- "Ultra compressed weights!"
He placed two on each of his wrists and ankles. "We'll put on about half of our body weight. It's to give you a handicap. It's old-fashioned, but it makes it hard to move and eats up stamina! Oh shoot. They're heavier than I thought."
Well, handicaps are fair. But it's still pretty difficult. They have way more experience.
And they know our weaknesses.
This will be a challenge. "By the way, there was a competition to decide on the design and we ended up using Young Hatsume's."
Of course. That girls a little insane. "To allow us to consider fighting you, huh? You're underestimating us." Kacchan said. The perma-scowl on his face.
All Might chuckled, but his blue eyes glinted as his face took a darker tone. "I wonder."
Man, even he's riled up.
"Alright. Each team will take the practical exam in order on the prepared stage. Sato, Kirishima, get ready." Aizawa-Sensei told them. They nodded, standing straight.
The Heroes began to head on inside. "Those waiting their turn can watch the exams or think of strategies as a team. Do what you want. That's all."
Yeah. Think strategies. Like we'll be able to do that.
Izu turned to us and Kacchan immediately walked away. I sighed again.
We have our work cut out for us.
