Chapter 15
Izu remained stiff and rigid next to me. After Midnight revealed the point of the game it became . . . difficult for Izu instantaneously.
This game is made to throw Izu into the gutter in the harshest way possible. Which means I'm going to have to participate somewhat seriously in the round.
My irritation with the hero increased as this whole thing became a whole lot harder.
"Now then, I will explain the rules of the cavalry battle. The time limit is fifteen minutes. Each team is worth the total of its members' points and the riders will wear the headband with that number on their foreheads."
"Teams will try to grab each other's headbands until time runs out and try to keep as many points as they can. Stolen headbands must be worn from the neck up. So the more you steal, the harder it'll be to manage them! And the most important thing is that even if your headband gets stolen, or if your team falls, you're not out!"
I see. So since there are 46 people, there will be twelve or fourteen teams on the field the whole time depending on how many members are on a team. This is a game of strategy with the different point variations.
"During the game, it'll be a cruel fight where you can use your Quirks! But it is still a Cavalry Battle. You'll get a red card for attacks that are trying to make people fall on purpose! You'll be removed immediately!" She warned, to which I heard Kacchan cluck his tongue in annoyance.
I sweat dropped. Same old Kacchan.
"Now, you have fifteen minutes to build your teams. Start!" Midnight called.
I glanced at Izu as people shouted, looking for teammates. He was thinking carefully, ignoring the sounds that roamed around us. Everyone was mainly wanting to team up with Kacchan and Todoroki, but no crowd surrounded Izu.
Solely because he is the top prize and everyone's target.
"Izu." He jumped slightly and turned to me. "What is it, Kiri-Nee?" I sighed, smiling lightly, and ruffled his hair. "Make sure you get some good people on your team."
He blinked in surprise. "Eh? Kiri-Nee, you're not going to be on my team?" He asked, a bit of hurt in his voice.
"Izu, I'd need to be a rider to reach my potential, and you need to be the rider for your potential. In this game, us teaming up isn't going to be the best option. Right?"
I could see the gears turning in his head as he realized I was right. "I see. That's true. Although your Quirk is impressive, it's more useful if you were a rider. I need to be on a team that can help run off. You're a fighting type." He began to murmur.
I chuckled at his habit and nodded. "Exactly. Make sure you get a good roster. Good-Luck. Well, later."
He smiled at me. "Good luck." He spoke softly as I walked into the crowd. I watched as everyone began to team up with their classmates and sighed.
Who would let me join? Hm. "Hey, you!" Ah. I turned to see a girl with orange hair pulled into a pony-tail and bright green eyes. She smiled at me, hand on her hip. "You want to be on our team?" She pointed to two other girls.
One girl has long, wavy, dark green hair and matching upturned eyes. The other has long brown hair kind of in the shape of a mushroom and covers her eyes.
I nodded, walking over to her. "Sure. Nozomi Kiriya." I introduced myself. The orange haired girl grinned. "Kendo Itsuka. That's Tokage Setsuna and Komori Kinoko. We're from Class B, right next door to your class." She introduced her friends.
I nodded. She knew what class I was in. "So, what's your Quirks?" I asked. Kendo chuckled. "Straight to business, I like it. Well, my Quirk is Large Fists." She informed me. I nodded and glanced at the other two.
Tokage smiled lightly. "Mine's Autotomy. Lizards mainly." She grinned, revealing pointy teeth. I looked at the last, Komori. "Mushroom." She said nervously. I see.
Not really notable Quirks with the exception of Kendo. "What about you?" Kendo questioned me. Hm, how should I answer this? "Blade Master." I answered.
A thick strand of my hair moved and formed part of a chain scythe. "I'm more of a ninja." I admitted. Kendo grinned, a glint flashing in her eyes. "Well, it looks like we have our rider."
Kendo spoke, saying she'd be the front horse; she's our best source for defense. Since there was some time before we started, Tokage spoke animatedly with her friends. She's sure chatty.
Kendo and Komori were responding well, probably use to her as she continued to talk. I just stood there, unsure how to react with them. They're such . . . girls. I'm not used to it, and frankly it's weirding me out.
I understand why they chose me, because fourth place has high points and all of our pooled together is 330. But even so this is a little much. Luckily, fifteen minutes ended fairly quickly and everyone took position.
As soon as I mounted on, I looked around, immediately spotting Izu. I was a bit surprised by his team. Uraraka wasn't so much of a surprise as the other two. The girl who used her 'babies' to clear the tight rope and Tokoyami.
Not what I expected. Ah, Uraraka's wearing some metallic boots. I furrowed my eyebrows. Izu's wearing a metal backpack too. Wait, is it a jet pack? What does that team have up their sleeve?
Shaking my head, I checked out the others. Only two teams stuck out to me. One being Todoroki. His team is well made up. Kaminari, Yaoyorozu, and Iida.
I'm really surprised Iida wasn't with Izu. But then again, they didn't decide mainly on friendship. They chose their partners wisely with the highest possibility of coming out on top.
Kaminari wards off others with his electricity, Yaoyorozu creates insulation to protect them from Kaminari's attack and she can be a pretty good defense, and Iida makes a strong and fast front horse.
The other team that sticks out is Kacchan's. Kacchan's team is Kirishima, Sero, and Mina. Kirishima being head horse makes sense, what with Kacchan's explosions. That and I'm pretty sure Kirishima wants to be his friend pretty badly.
As for the others, well, I think I know why he chose them. Mina's acid can counter Todoroki's ice, and with Sero Kacchan can go airborne. They weren't at random. No, Kacchan picked them in order to create a strong horse.
Everyone's taking this seriously. What a pain.
The crowd roared with excitement as everyone got into positions, excited for this match. "All right! You've made your teams, right? I'm not gonna ask if you're ready or not!" Present Mic's voice boomed in the arena as he remained in the box over viewing us, as the announcer.
"Now let's go! Counting down to the brutal battle royal! Three, two, one." Midnight pointed at us in the field.
"Start!" She finished. Everyone immediately went into action, heading straight for Izu.
"We're going after the others who are after Izu. They'll be focused on him mainly." I spoke as the girls ran. They nodded. "Yeah!" Kendo responded.
Amongst the groups headed for Izu, one made the ground mush as if it were quick sand, making Izu's group begin to fall in. That's not good. What'll you do, Izu?
Izu clutched something in his hand. It kind of looks like a detonator. But that can't be right. He pushed down on it and the metal pack came to life. A jet pack?!
The group managed to get out of the trap and they escaped to the sky. I see. So then those boots allow Uraraka to fly as well. That was his plan.
Having Uraraka make them all virtually weightless, she steers while Izu uses the jetpack to pick them off the ground. Not many Quirks allow one to escape into the sky.
I smirked. That's Izu for you.
Jiro shot her ear plugs out at them; however Tokoyami's Dark Shadow deflected it. Nice choice. Tokoyami basically has the ability to protect them from any oncoming attack in any direction. That's an excellent roster, Izu.
Well, enough on them. "Kendo, make sure to catch me." I spoke. The ginger front horse nodded. "Take care." I hopped up, standing on their arms, and jumped off and onto the nearest horse.
"Wha?!" The girls shouted in surprise. I snatched her head band and jumped off and onto the next one, taking theirs as well. "You!" A boy shot what looked like a bubble. Not wanting to take it for granted I jumped back.
The bubble exploded, and a pink sticky substance was left in its wake. Sensing it, I back flipped and landed on a large hand. "Nice, Nozomi." Kendo grinned.
I nodded and hopped back onto our horse, wrapping the bands around my neck. Now, who to target next?
Explosions sounded. Huh? Izu is in the air again. Kacchan is using his explosions to fly after. Hm.
If I take Kacchan's headband, how mad will he get? I kinda wanna tease him a bit. He's been getting less angry with me lately. Can't have that now. And hey, distracts him from Izu so bonus! "Kendo, throw me!" I demanded, pointing up.
"Eh? But what happened to getting everyone else." I smirked cheekily. "I'm not aiming for Izu. However Kacchan is a different story. He did want me to take this seriously afterall." Besides, I could use the exercise.
I jumped up and flipped. "Wha?!" Kendo quickly caught my figure in her enlarged hand and threw me at them.
Tokoyami used Dark Shadow to block Kacchan's explosion. Chance!
I spun and swung my leg. Kacchan noticed me and used his explosions to propel him up and out of my kick range. "Kiri-Nee!" Izu shouted in shock. "Kiri!" Kacchan growled out. I just smirked, mischief in my eyes.
He used his explosions and launched at me. I blocked his strike and punched, to which he blocked. We were locked in a fierce battle as we fell from the sky, each trying to take the others headband whilst also trying to hit the other.
He reached out for my headband, to which I moved my head slightly away, grabbing his arm. "What?" He tried to pull back but I had a firm grip. Using my strength, I threw him to the ground quicker.
However Sero's tape caught him and brought him back to his team. They caught him. As expected.
Looking down, I see Kendo's hand waiting. I moved my body around so I fell in that direction and landed safely. "Nice catch." Tokage complimented.
I clucked my tongue in slight annoyance. "As I thought. Kacchan's headband can only be taken if he's on his horse." I grumbled. "Eh? Wouldn't that be harder?" Komori questioned quizzically. I shook my head as they began to run.
"It'll be tedious, but Kacchan is a good one on one fighter. Not to mention he utilizes his Quirk to the best of his abilities. He may be rash and rude, but he's a genius in combat." I informed.
Thing's are actually starting to get a bit interesting. I blinked in surprise.
Huh?
When have I ever gotten excited about fighting? It's too troublesome. Yet this battle is a lot more interesting then the last.
That's strange.
"Nozomi, over there." Kendo nodded to two teams, chasing after Izu. They're too focused on him. They're not the least bit concerned for themselves. Hm.
I smirked. "Go." Kendo and the girls picked up speed as we rushed over. "Roger!" She responded. I could hear the grin in her voice. We ran right behind the two teams.
Alright. I crouched down a bit before pouncing. Leaping over them, I snatched one headband. "What?!" The boy shouted in confusion. I landed atop his leading horse mans head and used them as a footstool to lunge at the other horse, taking their headband as well.
"You!" He went to punch me, but I caught his fist. The other horse ran at us as well. "Take this!" A part of the girls hair on the bottom took form of a fist.
Using my Quirk, I hardened my hair into a steel blade and sliced it off before jumping back onto my horse.
I wrapped the bands around my neck. This should be enough. "Give us back our bands!" Voices shouted. Eh? Looking to the side, I see a few people running after us. "Huh." I mused.
I expected they'd retaliate. But not together. "Uh-oh." Kendo murmured as we ran off. "It seems we've made enemies." I stated emotionlessly. The girls laughed nervously.
How many points do we have now? I looked up at the screen and my eyes widened slightly. What the? Izu's in first place, followed by me, but Kacchan and Todoriki aren't behind us. No, it's team Momoma and Tetsutetsu.
Kacchan has zero points?!
I looked over to see him facing against the person who just took his band. Kendo and the girls stopped and looked over as well.
The rider is a blonde guy with gray eyes and a sly smile on his face. I didn't even notice him. "What'd you say bastard? Give it back or I'll kill you!" Kacchan shouted.
"Since Midnight said it was the first game, it wouldn't make sense for them to cut a ton of people in the qualifier, right? Assuming they'd keep about forty people for the next stage, we just made sure we stayed within that number as we ran. Observing from the back the Quirks and personalities of those who would be our rivals. There's no point in being obsessive over winning in the prelims, right?"
I narrowed my eyes on the boy, my grip on Kendo's shoulders tightening. "N-Nozomi?" She asked nervously.
"It's better than going after a temporary 'top' like a horse with a carrot waving in front of its face. Oh, while I'm at it, you're famous aren't you? As the victim of the sludge incident!" My grip tightened and Kendo winced.
But I wasn't the only one. I could see Kacchan visibly getting angrier and angrier. "Tell me about it sometime. About how it feels to be attacked by villains once a year."
"Kendo, who is that?" I asked, voice laced with venom. "He's my classmate. Momoma." She answered hesitantly. "We're already in second place. We don't need to go after him." She tried, not wanting to go after her friend.
"You're right. To an extent. Besides, Kacchan will take his headband back. It's fine." I stated, shrugging nonchalantly. This seemed to confuse the girls. "How do you know?" She asked.
I watched as Kacchan snapped. He was covered in a demonic aura of sorts. "The Calvary Battle is about to enter the second half! In this unexpected rise of Class B. Who will wear the ten million points in the end?!" Mic's voice rang through the arena.
I watched Kacchan as he let out a battle cry. That's right. Kacchan is different then most.
Yes, he's loud, he's rude, he picks fights unnecessarily, but . . . I smirked.
"Because you shouldn't make an enemy out of Bakugo Katsuki."
