Chapter 5
It has been a full week since that godawful dinner and life changing confession but surprisingly, my life has been uneventful since.
I was actually enjoying the peace because some part of me knew it was the calm before the storm. How right I was.
After the whole 'disappearing' thing, nothing else happened so it pretty much skipped my mind that my dead mother was supposedly a fairy.
I woke up, ate food, went to school, sat through boring classes, came back home, slept, ate food, slept again, repeat! That... was my life cycle.
Whoever left the note in my locker had not owned up so I also boxed that up in my mind and threw it in a dark corner not be remembered. M&M avoided me most of the time, only giving me the stink eye here and there.
In conclusion, the week was very boringggggg!!!
No drama AT ALL! Not even in drama class.
I'm not wishing evil for anyone but not even a public break up or a scandal to keep the school buzzing.
Imagine my excitement when Claire finally decided to throw a party.
I'm not a fan of parties but any opportunity to get out of my house that doesn't involve school right now, I cling to it for dear life.
Claire fits into the mold of your cliché cheerleader. She's really not mean to anyone, very friendly and overly energetic but she could switch up on you real quick. Safe to say Claire is super popular and knows loads of people with no real friends.
Did I mention that Claire is Diane's twin? As in, Diane my best friend? Guess not.
When I got home after another boring day, I took a nap. The party was starting by 8 so I had enough time to get ready.

It wasn't even surprising that Claire threw the party at the beach. Picking an outfit proved extremely difficult for me. Like a lot of other girls out there, I'd pick dressing comfortably over dressing stylish.
I had the fashion sense of a penguin or panda, very monotonous. I grabbed a pair of grey sweatpants with a baggy shirt and fixed my fanny pack comfortably on my waist. Making sure to carry my phone and money in case of an emergency, I started towards the door so I could leave.
Aunt Lola gave me a strange look as I was leaving.
"Where are you going dressed like that?"
I shrugged.
"A beach party. Any problem?" I answered smiling sheepishly.
Aunt Lola is a fashion icon. She has the fashion sense of a teenager while I dress like a grandma. Don't judge.
"Not dressed like that you aren't."
She said, grabbing me by my bag as she dragged me to my room.
She started ransacking my wardrobe, throwing clothes here and there. One flew to my right as another landed close to my bathroom door.
"Aunt Lolaaaaa..."
A polka dotted legging flew to my left.
"...nobody is even going to notice what I wear."
A black full length gown flew to my right.
"It's not like I'm going for a beauty pageant."
A wool sweater hit me smack in the face.
I whined even though she wasn't listening to me.
"Ahaaa I found it!"
She exclaimed happily as she held up a pink and white sundress that I bought when I was 14. I had not worn it for about two years since it was way above my knee and that was wayyy out of my comfort zone.
"Lols mama, are you encouraging me to show some skin?"
I asked her jokingly as I attempted to wiggle my eyebrows.
"Pair that lovely dress with your gold sandals and go for your party. At least now you don't look like a homeless person."
She said completely ignoring my question as she grabbed my bag and threw me out the door. Literally.
•••
I hopped into my car and headed to the beach. Halfway there, I started feeling very uncomfortable.
I couldn't shake off the feeling even when I got to the beach and I was getting worried.
Stepping out of my car, I noticed a lot of people crowded by a fire.
I guess bonfire and beach party now mean the same thing.
Searching for at least one reasonable person I know, I spotted Amber. She was my lab partner in chemistry, she was pretty and quite decent compared to the other fur brains that attended my school.
The sand was deep but that's to be expected at a beach so I walked carefully so that I won't mistakenly cut my sandals.
"Hey Amber!"
I said as she looked up at me and smiled when she finally recognized me.
"Finally! A girl that has other things to talk about apart from boys. I was getting fed up. Sit!"
She moved over so I could sit on her mat. I finally noticed the guys she was already sitting with.
I waved at them as I turned back to Amber.
"I'm confused. You were talking about boys with boys?"
I gestured towards them with my shoulder, trying not to be too obvious.
"Oh no! Some girls from the cheerleading squad apparently were attracted to the 'chick magnets'. They came here pretending to be my friends to get their attention."
I chuckled at 'chick magnet'. Wonder who came up with that.
The guys were actually very hot. And by hot, I mean hotter than the bonfire hot. They were smoking hot.
"Scarlet, meet Shaun, Shane and Luke."
She pointed at them as she mentioned their names.
"Hey"
They said in unison as one of them, I think Shane, winked at me.
Cry me a river because I was burning up. Thank God I don't blush.
"Hey back and nice going Luke"
The boy in question raised an eyebrow, motioning for me to continue.
"You killed the S train. You know, Scarlet, Shaun, Shane... Luke"
He smirked at me while casting side glances at Amber.
"It's like they always say. If you want to be number 1,you have to be odd"
Amber snorted while the rest of us burst into laughter.
A low wolf whistle caught our attention as we all turned to see Jake, some blonde kid, who looked very drunk. Watching him attempt to walk in a straight line was amusing.
"Scarlet and Amber, you both are looking ravishing tonight. Now all we need is a green and Tadaa... we have a traffic light"
He slurred as he tried to stand upright. I can't even imagine how much alcohol he took to come up with that line. It even rhymed. Rolling my eyes as he walked away, I saw people playing in the water.
"I'm going to check the water out."
I said, standing up and taking off my sandals. "watch my stuff!"
I strutted away without looking back at the group I left behind.
"Well someone is bossy. I like it."
I have no idea who said that but I heard them laugh as I walked farther away.
Inching closer and closer to the water shore, I heard a strangled cry for help far from where I was. I looked around but it was too dark to see.
Running to someone close, I asked to borrow their phone so I could use the flashlight.
Pointing it at the deeper part of the water, I saw a head struggling to stay afloat.
By now, I had caught the attention of other people who had been looking at me strangely.
I gave the phone back to the owner who was beside me. Acting on pure instinct, I dove into the water on a rescue mission.
What am I doing? I can't even swim!
I'm going to die!!!!
I didn't even have to put too much effort as the tide carried me deeper, towards the person.
"Hang on"
I shouted when I couldn't see the head anymore. Swimming to where I assumed he would be, I sucked in air and went under water.
It was too dark to see so I tried feeling with my hands, checking the surroundings. Just as I was about to run out of air, I grabbed onto something solid.
Recognizing it as a human figure, I pulled but the person was too heavy. The person was drowning. Don't panic, Scarlet. This isn't the time to hyperventilate.
I ran out of air but I couldn't go back to the surface for more. If I go up for air and can't find him when I come back, what next? Trying to hold my breath longer, I pulled but he was weighing me down.
I felt my lungs burning up and my eyes stinging from the lack of air. Unable to hold my breath any longer, I reflexively breathe in. Instead of water rushing into my body through my nose and choking me, I breathe in just fine.
Hold up. I can breathe Underwater?!
