In the Midst: Prompt #1
Here is my contribution to writing prompt #1 from spiderneds's book In the Midst: A Book of Writing Prompts. While writing is not a hobby I put at the top of my list, I still enjoy doing it from time to time, so this would be a great way to practice and get better at it. So here it goes!
As for characters, this one I'll leave open for interpretation.
PROMPT #1:
Take your character, and put them in the middle of facing their worst fear. How do they react? What do they do? Do they survive it?
.....
You are all alone.
No one loves you.
No one accepts who you are.
No one wants to be your friend.
No one likes you for you.
Weirdo.
Freak.
Grow up.
"Stop it," she whimpered through sobs.
It was midnight. Everyone else had gone to bed, yet she was still up, battling a fear she that seemed to haunt her almost every single night. She sat alone in her room. It was dark and silent. Except it wasn't silent at all. And there was nothing she could do about it.
But you know it's true. You don't have any friends. No boy has ever liked you.
You are going to end up alone. Alone with no one to talk to.
No one to love.
Because no one will love you.
Another fit of sobs erupted from her. She wiped away tears from her eyes, which only resulted in wet hands and more tears to replace the previous ones.
"Please stop," she said. "I can't take it. You're killing me."
You have too many walls up. That drives people away. You push them away.
You don't want to but you can't stop.
You are killing yourself.
She scrunched her face. Her chest ached in pain, as if someone was crushing her heart with their bare hands. It hurt. It hurt to feel this way. To let her thoughts control her.
"Make it stop. Please just make it stop."
But it didn't. It kept talking. The more it talked, the louder it got, from whispers to screams in a matter of seconds. Her breathing became heavier and her grip on the bedsheets tightened.
She wanted to scream.
All alone. Anyone who actually likes you will soon change their mind.
And it's your fault.
You do this to yourself.
Everything seemed to cave in on her. The noise worsened and worsened. It was too loud and she couldn't turn it off. Every inch of the walls seemed to be screaming at her, suffocating her in words no one else could hear. She couldn't breathe.
"I-I can't do this anymore," she cried. "Make it stop. Just let me die already."
ALONE.
NO FRIENDS.
NO ONE WHO LOVES YOU.
NO ONE WILL EVER LOVE YOU.
"Stop!"
...
...
All of a sudden, the noise stopped.
She opened her eyes, still filled with tears, and looked around the room. It was silent. Pure silence.
Then came a voice different than the one before.
You are loved.
She let out a sniffle, her sobs slowing down as this new voice continued to talk. The aching in her chest seemed to disappear and her breathing returned to a normal state. The voice was comforting and soft, warming her and filling her heart up.
She wondered where this new voice came from. How could it say such wonderful things? Were they all true?
I love you.
Your parents love you.
There are people out there who love you. They just haven't come yet. Have patience, for they will be worth the wait.
"But it doesn't feel that way," she said. "I'm all alone."
You are not alone. I am here for you.
Don't worry about being alone. Don't worry about having friends or a significant other. It's all in the timing. They will come.
You're okay. You're going to be okay.
The voice soothed her as it spoke. Her sobbing had tired her out and she felt her eyelids get heavy. Before she knew it, her head was against her pillow and her eyes fell shut. The world was silent once again. The pain was gone and that old voice had vanished.
She inhaled deeply, then exhaled.
Everything is going to be okay.
