Chapter 7. A Dungeon in Panels: Greeds Labyrinth

The portal spat Serena and BJ into darkness. Their boots clicked against cold stone as they stepped cautiously into a cavernous room, the air damp and heavy. Crystals jutted from the walls like jagged teeth, reflecting faint, eerie light that shimmered across the dungeon floor. "Uh... cheerful place," BJ muttered, scanning the walls with his sensors. "Remind me again why we ever thought a dungeon would be fun?"
Serena shivered slightly, brushing a strand of hair from her face. "Because Raymond's pieces are never in normal places, BJ. And judging by this ambiance... we're in for a puzzle."
Every step echoed against the stone walls, the faint hum of the crystals filling the silence. Shadows danced unnaturally, and the occasional drip of water sounded like a ticking clock. Serena's eyes darted from one glittering crystal to the next, careful not to disturb the fragile formations. BJ flicked a lever on his shoulder. "Sensors are picking up... something. Movement. Tiny... but definitely alive."
Serena crouched, squinting into the shadows. A faint giggle echoed through the chamber, high-pitched and mischievous. "Who's there?" Serena called, trying to sound confident despite the chill crawling up her spine. From behind a cluster of jagged crystals, a small figure slowly emerged. Its skin was bright orange, eyes glinting with curiosity, and its tiny hands clutched a pile of glittering trinkets. The creature's grin was wide, sharp-toothed, and unnerving in the dim light. "Hello..." Serena said cautiously. "I'm Serena, and this is BJ. We're looking, uh,for a piece of a friend. Maybe you've seen it?"
The little troll tilted its head, sniffing the air. Its tiny nose wriggled as it assessed them. "Heehee... pieces... you want pieces? MINE... maybe..."
BJ muttered under his breath, stepping slightly behind Serena. "Yeah... definitely mischievous. Definitely up to something. Definitely trouble."
Serena squinted at the troll, curiosity mixing with caution. "What's your name?"
The troll's grin widened, its eyes sparkling like shards of crystal in the dark. "Greed... I'm Greed!"
Serena exchanged a glance with BJ. "Greed," she repeated slowly. "Alright... I have a feeling this isn't going to be simple." The shadows of the dungeon seemed to deepen as the little troll scuttled around the crystals, glittering trinkets clinking in his tiny hands. Serena and BJ stepped closer, hearts pounding with a mix of anticipation and wariness. Somewhere in the darkness, a faint crystal glimmer hinted that this room, and Greed held secrets. And perhaps, one of Raymond's next pieces. Greed perched atop a jagged crystal, legs dangling, eyes glinting in the dim light. His tiny hands clutched a heap of glittering trinkets, which rattled softly as he leaned forward. "So..." Serena began, cautiously. "You said you know where Raymond's piece is?"
Greed let out a high-pitched giggle, sharp and twitchy. "Ahhh... yes! But... you can't just take it. No, no, no. You must... earn it."
BJ groaned, muttering under his breath. "I should have known there'd be a riddle or a weird quest. Always with the weird quests."
Serena tilted her head, eyes narrowing. "Earn it how?"
Greed bounced slightly on his perch, making tiny sparks leap from the crystals below. "There's a crystal... teal, glowing, hiding somewhere in this dungeon. Find it... bring it to me... then maybe, just maybe, you get what you want."
Serena frowned, crouching to inspect the floor. "Teal... any hints? Any traps? Or is this like every other ridiculous adventure where we just stumble blindly?"
Greed waved a tiny, clawed hand, eyes twinkling. "Hmm... tricky. It is hiding, after all! But... I will tell you this. The crystal likes light... but hates touch. Approach too carelessly... ouch!"
BJ rubbed his shoulder. "Great. A fragile glowing rock guarded by a mischievous troll in a dungeon. I mean... this is exactly why I became a robot, right? To deal with less nonsense."
Serena gave him a pointed look. "Come on, BJ. Focus. If we get this crystal, we get Raymond's engine piece. One more step closer to fixing him."
Greed twirled a tiny shard of crystal between his fingers, giggling again. "And don't think you can trick me! I see everything! Sneaky moves, clever plans... I'll know!"
Serena straightened, determination bright in her eyes. "Alright, Greed. Consider it a challenge. We'll find your teal crystal. And then... we take the engine piece. Fair?"
The troll's grin widened impossibly. "Heehee... fair, yes. But only if you survive the dungeon, clever humans!"
BJ groaned dramatically. "I'm starting to miss Segue-2. At least he only threw paint and insults."
Serena rolled her eyes, stepping toward the twisting shadows of the crystal cavern. "Come on, BJ. Let's find this teal crystal. Greed's not getting the best of us, not today."

Above them, the crystals shimmered faintly, casting kaleidoscopic reflections across the dungeon walls. Serena and BJ crept carefully through the twisting dungeon, crystals jutting out from the walls like jagged teeth. The faint teal glow that Greed had mentioned teased them from somewhere deeper inside, shifting and flickering as if the dungeon itself were alive. "Keep your eyes open," Serena whispered. "The moment we get careless, something's going to hit us."
BJ grunted, scanning with his sensors. "Yeah, like a giant rolling barrel. Or, oh, right." Before he could finish, a heavy wooden barrel came tumbling down from above, spinning like a possessed wheel. Serena yelped and leapt to the side, narrowly avoiding being flattened, while BJ got smacked in the shoulder with a satisfying thud, stumbling a few steps before catching himself.
"Seriously?!" BJ groaned, brushing splinters off his jacket. "A barrel trap? Who even designs these things?"
Serena bit back a laugh, ducking under a crystal that had grown low to the floor. "Apparently, Greed. Tiny troll, big imagination."
They pressed on, stepping carefully over cracked stones and slippery patches of crystal dust. The faint teal glow grew stronger, shimmering through jagged walls like a distant lighthouse. BJ muttered as he dusted himself off, "At least we're getting closer. I can feel it."
Serena nodded, eyes fixed on the light ahead. "One more turn... careful... there! Did you see that?" A small shaft of teal light reflected off a crystal on the far side of the corridor. It pulsed, beckoning them forward. The barrel trap had slowed them down, bruised them slightly, but it hadn't stopped them. "Almost there," Serena breathed, moving faster, determination in her steps. "The teal crystal... it has to be just beyond this hall."
BJ followed, muttering under his breath but smiling slightly despite the soreness. "Yeah, yeah. Adventure, danger, rolling barrels... just another Tuesday, right?" The glow ahead pulsed again, brighter this time, teasing them with the promise of Raymond's engine piece.
The teal crystal pulsed in the darkness ahead, casting an otherworldly glow that danced across jagged walls. Serena's heart raced. There it was, the prize Greed had promised. Raymond's engine piece, just within reach, if only they could survive the dungeon's final defenses. "Alright," Serena whispered, crouching low. "We get the crystal, then run like crazy to Greed. Easy, right?"
BJ shot her a skeptical look. "Define 'easy' in Greed's dungeon terms. Because last time, a rolling barrel nearly took me out." No sooner had he finished speaking than the first trap triggered: a series of spiked pendulums swung from the ceiling, swinging rhythmically toward the corridor where the crystal rested. Serena ducked, twisting sideways as one narrowly missed her head, while BJ stumbled over a jagged stone, smacking his shoulder against the wall. "OW! Okay, not easy," BJ muttered, brushing himself off.
Serena grabbed the crystal carefully, its smooth surface cool beneath her fingers. "Got it! Let's move!"
As they darted down the corridor, the floor beneath them trembled. Pressure plates triggered a barrage of spinning blades and small crystal shards shot from hidden slits in the walls. Serena leapt over one spinning blade, snagged the crystal in both hands, and rolled past another shard that clattered harmlessly behind her. BJ yelped as a shard grazed his arm, sending a small spark from his sensors. "Greed's dungeon really hates us," BJ muttered, limping slightly but keeping pace.
Serena gritted her teeth. "Focus! One more stretch, then we hand this crystal over and get the engine piece!" A final trap sprung: a swinging net designed to entangle them. Serena dove sideways, rolling under it, dragging the crystal along, while BJ shot forward with a mechanical leap, narrowly avoiding the net's clumsy grasp.

The corridor seemed endless, each trap more ridiculous than the last, but finally, through the pulsing teal light, Greed appeared, perched atop a crystal pedestal, eyes twinkling mischievously. "Ahhh! You have the crystal!" Greed squeaked, bouncing slightly. "Heehee... clever humans! Now... hand it over... if you dare."
Serena skidded to a stop, clutching the crystal tightly. BJ leaned against the wall, catching his breath, grinning despite the bruises. "Piece by piece, Greed," Serena said firmly, "we're getting Raymond back. And this crystal? It's your ticket to giving up the engine piece."
"HEEHEEHEE!" Greed cackled, suddenly snatching the crystal away with startling speed. The little troll leapt onto a jagged pedestal, holding the glowing gem aloft. "Thought you could outsmart me? Foolish humans!"
BJ froze mid-step, blinking. "Wait... what? He's, he's the.."
The crystal glinted in the dim light, and as Greed tumbled backward onto a hidden ramp, his small frame seemed to shimmer. The cloak fell away, or rather, melted into nothingness and there he was: the mysterious cloaked figure who had stolen Raymond's engine piece all along. The troll grin was still there, but now it was unmistakably the villain they had been chasing in disguise. "Greed... you're... the thief?!" Serena shouted, eyes wide in disbelief.
"Clever girl," he sneered, voice echoing through the dungeon. "But not clever enough!"
Before they could react, he dashed into a twisting corridor, the teal crystal clutched tightly. The dungeon seemed to groan and shift, as if it were conspiring with him. "After him!" Serena yelled, sprinting forward, dodging another set of swinging crystal blades. BJ leapt beside her, his mechanical legs pumping with speed. The chase was frantic. Greed, or rather, the cloaked troll-thief, vaulted over jagged stones, ducked under swinging nets, and somehow slipped through narrow tunnels that Serena and BJ had to squeeze through, scrambling and bumping into walls.
"Seriously!" BJ muttered, narrowly avoiding a falling crystal shard. "All of this... just for one piece of a robot!"
Serena ducked under a swinging pendulum. "Focus, BJ! Raymond's counting on us!"
The thief laughed, a high, tinkling sound that echoed off the crystal walls. "You'll never catch me! Not in my dungeon!"
But Serena gritted her teeth, eyes locked on the glimmering teal crystal. "Oh, we will catch you," she said, determination radiating from her every step. "We always do." The dungeon twisted behind them, a maze of shadows and glittering shards, as the chase barreled forward. Crystals clinked, traps triggered, and the glow of the teal crystal pulsed like a heartbeat in the thief's hands. The dungeon corridor twisted again, crystals glittering like a kaleidoscope, and Serena's boots clattered against stone. BJ skidded around a jagged corner, sensors flaring. Ahead, the cloaked troll, Greed revealed as the thief, was darting nimbly, clutching the teal crystal tightly. "Not this time!" Serena shouted, sprinting full tilt.
The thief ducked under a swinging pendulum, narrowly avoiding a sharp crystal shard. "You'll never catch me!" he squeaked, spinning down a narrow ramp.
BJ growled, mechanical legs pumping. "Oh, we're catching you, trust me. You just don't know it yet."
Serena slid around a corner, spotting a precarious pile of fallen crystals. She glanced at BJ. "Ready?"
"Always," he muttered, eyes narrowing.

Together, they barreled down the corridor, timing their steps with the rhythm of the swinging traps. The thief, small and surprisingly fast, had nowhere left to run. One last corner—a drop leading to a jagged pit, loomed ahead. Serena lunged, throwing herself at the thief. BJ leapt from the opposite side, knocking him off balance. With a comical flail and squeak, the troll went sprawling, landing in a tangle of dangling crystal shards. "Gotcha!" Serena exclaimed, grabbing the teal crystal as the thief's claws scrambled uselessly on the stone.
BJ shook his head, hands on his knees, panting. "Finally... one less ridiculous obstacle in this dungeon of horrors."
The little troll-thief lay unconscious, muttering faintly, wrapped in the glittering shards of his own trap-filled lair. Serena held the teal crystal tightly, feeling the soft hum of power resonate through it. "Raymond's engine piece..." she whispered, smiling. "We've got it."
BJ gave her a small grin, brushing dust from his shoulder. "Not bad, human. Not bad at all."
Serena held up the crystal triumphantly. "One more piece for Raymond. One step closer to putting him back together. Let's get out of this dungeon before Greed wakes up and decides to start round two." The dungeon, still shimmering with teal light, seemed almost calmer now, as if acknowledging their victory. With the engine piece safely in hand, Serena and BJ turned toward the exit, hearts lightened by the triumph and ready for the next world, and the next chaotic adventure that awaited them.
