Chapter 13. The Big Bang Room: Milky Way's Cosmic Chaos

The ship's engines hummed softly as it glided over a dense blanket of snow, settling into a clearing where towering pine trees stretched toward the sky, heavy with freshly fallen white powder. Serena peered through the frosted canopy, scanning for any sign of Raymond's missing pieces. "There!" she exclaimed, pointing toward a glint nestled in the branches of a low-hanging pine. One of Raymond's gears sparkled faintly in the cold light. "If we can just—"
"Hold up, hold up," BJ said, stepping ahead with a cocky grin and hands stuffed into his jacket pockets. "Let me show you how it's done. You've gotta handle this with finesse, not like some amateur on a snowfield scavenger hunt."
Serena shot him a sharp look. "BJ, it's a gear, not a trophy. Can you please—"
"Relax, princess," BJ interrupted smoothly. "I've got this under control." He strutted forward, brushing snow from the branch he intended to step on, clearly underestimating the frozen wood.
Serena groaned. "BJ, don't—"
Too late. The branch creaked ominously under his weight. BJ froze for half a second, the cocky grin faltering, before the wood gave way with a sharp snap. "Whoa!" he yelled, flailing his arms as he tumbled backward, sending a spray of snow into the air. "Okay, maybe not as under control as I thought!"
Serena's eyes widened as she lunged to grab him, but the frozen branch had broken completely, and both of them began to slide uncontrollably toward a hidden opening beneath the snow, a yawning hole in the forest floor, obscured by a thin layer of powder. BJ flailed and shouted, "Seriously! Who designed this forest?!"
"BJ, look out!" Serena cried, reaching for his hand as they plummeted toward the darkness. The world tilted and twisted as snow whipped past their faces, the distant sunlight now a blur above them. Branches and roots scraped past as the hole swallowed them whole, pulling them further into the unknown depths of the forest. And then, with a final flash of white and a spray of snow, they were gone, falling into whatever strange, unseen chamber awaited below.

When Serena blinked, she realized the air around her was damp and cold. Snowflakes from the forest above seemed like a distant memory; now, she was in pitch darkness. BJ groaned beside her, brushing himself off. "Ugh... why do these things always end with me on the floor in some creepy dungeon?" he muttered, rubbing the back of his neck. "Seriously, I'm way too good-looking to be falling into holes all the time."
Serena rolled her eyes. "Focus, BJ. We need a light switch or something before we get eaten or... whatever dark gods do."
From the shadows, a figure emerged. A single glowing eye pierced the darkness, floating at a height that made the duo tilt their heads uncomfortably. The presence was immense, and the air itself seemed to hum with power. "I am Milky Way," the voice intoned, low and echoing, reverberating in the walls. "One-eyed guardian of these trials. If you wish to claim Raymond's gear, you must solve the puzzles I set. Fail... and remain in darkness forever."
Serena swallowed hard but straightened her shoulders. "Alright... puzzles it is."
Milky Way's glowing eye flickered toward a nearby wall where a series of levers protruded, each marked with odd symbols and strange grooves. "First trial: the Lever Puzzle. Pull each lever in the exact direction of the cosmic pattern. Only one correct sequence will open the path forward."
BJ smirked, cracking his knuckles. "Alright, this is more my style. Watch and learn, princess. This is called muscle with style."
Serena muttered under her breath, "This is not a style competition, BJ..."
The two moved cautiously toward the levers. Each one resisted at first, then clicked audibly when pulled. BJ tried the first lever backward, then forward, then shrugged. "Hey, maybe we're supposed to test them? Like... trial-and-error? Not everything needs elegance."
Serena scowled, but she started analyzing the symbols carefully. "No... we have to follow the pattern. Look at the grooves, they match the star alignment outside. It's directional."
Working together, BJ pulling while Serena corrected his overzealous angles, they slowly aligned the levers: one tilted forward, one to the left, one diagonal, and the last exactly vertical. A low hum filled the room. Then, with a thunderous click and a cascade of mechanical whirs, a section of the wall slid open, revealing the next passage. Milky Way's eye gleamed with approval, or at least as close to approval as a dark one-eyed god could manage. "Correct. You may proceed to the next trial... if you dare."
Serena let out a sigh of relief, brushing snow from her shoulders that had nothing to do with the current darkness. "Well... that wasn't so bad. Next one, let's see what you've got for us, Milky Way."
BJ gave her a cocky grin. "Bring it on, spooky eyeball dude. We're just getting started."
The next chamber opened into a vast, dimly lit hall, the ceiling lost in shadows. Hanging from above were dozens of enormous, glimmering spiderwebs, each glinting like liquid silver in the faint light. Milky Way's single eye glowed from the shadows. "Second trial: the Spider Catch," the god intoned. "One misstep, one wrong grab, and the web will collapse. Only by catching the ethereal spider suspended in the center may you proceed."
Serena squinted upward. A delicate, shimmering spider hovered at the center of the largest web, its legs moving like clockwork in slow, hypnotic patterns. "Alright," she whispered, "precision. We need patience."
BJ groaned, leaning against the wall with crossed arms. "Precision, patience... you mean you want me to stand around and look pretty while the spider plays hard to get?"
Serena shot him a glare. "BJ, shut up and focus."
They moved cautiously, stepping onto the web's outer threads, which were surprisingly solid under their weight. Each step caused vibrations, the delicate threads swaying ominously. The spider twitched in response, almost as if aware of their presence. Minutes passed. Serena ducked and lunged, barely grazing a silver leg, while BJ tried to corner it from above, his hands flailing as if conducting an invisible orchestra. "Gotcha! No, wait, almost gotcha! Dang it!"
"BJ, calm down! Move with me!" Serena hissed, dodging a swinging strand. Her hands found a stable thread, and she took a deep breath. "Okay... ready... go!" Together, they lunged in a coordinated motion. Serena's hands caught the spider lightly, while BJ, surprisingly agile, blocked it from slipping sideways. The creature twitched, struggling, but remained in their grasp.
Milky Way's voice echoed through the hall, approving but eerily calm. "Correct. You have captured the ethereal spider. Few have patience. Fewer still have coordination."
The spider shimmered one last time before dissolving into a silver light, which then coalesced into a floating key hovering before them. Serena reached out and grabbed it, holding it aloft triumphantly. BJ smirked, brushing imaginary dust from his jacket. "Not bad... teamwork... I'll allow it. For now."
Serena rolled her eyes, still holding the key. "Let's just keep moving before Milky Way decides to throw another... whatever this was at us." The light from the key illuminated a narrow passageway ahead, promising the next trial and bringing them one step closer to reclaiming Raymond's missing gear.

The passageway opened into a circular chamber bathed in a soft, greenish glow. In the center of the room stood a strange contraption: a flat pedestal with an array of buttons, each marked with symbols of sun, rain, wind, and soil. Suspended above it was a tiny, barren sapling, its branches weak and leafless. Milky Way's single eye gleamed from the shadows. "Third trial: the Tree of Life. Only by activating the correct sequence of elements will you awaken the tree. Fail, and the sapling will wither, and your path forward will remain closed."
Serena crouched beside the pedestal, examining the buttons. "Okay... we need to make it grow. Sun, rain, wind, soil... sounds simple, but there's probably a trick."
BJ leaned back on one leg, hands on his hips. "Trick or no trick, I got this. You just... follow my lead. I'm a natural at... button pressing."
Serena rolled her eyes. "Yeah, we'll see about that." She began analyzing the symbols, noticing subtle engravings that hinted at the natural order: sun first to energize, rain next to nourish, wind to spread, soil to anchor. BJ watched her with a smirk, occasionally pressing buttons out of sequence, earning frustrated glares from Serena each time. "BJ! No, not like that! You'll ruin it!" she hissed, swatting at his hand.
He shrugged. "Relax, princess. I'm just testing... your method. Quality control."
Finally, they coordinated, pressing the buttons in the correct order: sun, rain, wind, soil. The sapling shivered at first, then glowed, growing rapidly. Branches stretched outward, buds unfurling into vibrant leaves. Flowers bloomed in miniature bursts of color, and the room filled with the scent of fresh growth. Serena's face lit up with a satisfied grin. "Got it!" she exclaimed, stepping back. BJ gave a triumphant nod, puffing his chest. "See? Skill, grace, and a hint of natural charm."
Milky Way's voice rumbled approvingly. "Correct. The Tree of Life has blossomed under your guidance. Few demonstrate such harmony with growth and balance."
The pedestal retracted into the floor, revealing a new doorway glowing faintly at the far end of the chamber. Serena and BJ exchanged a glance, their excitement tempered with caution. "All right," Serena said, brushing off her hands. "Next puzzle awaits. Let's see what you've got for us this time, spooky eyeball guy."
BJ cracked his knuckles, a mischievous grin tugging at his lips. "Bring it on. We're just warming up." With the Tree of Life fully awakened, they stepped confidently through the doorway.
As the Tree of Life settled into its full bloom, a single fruit appeared among the vibrant branches. It shimmered faintly, a soft azure glow radiating from its core. Serena's eyes widened. "That's it," she whispered, reaching out carefully. "The fruit... it holds the blue emblem. This has to be the key for the next puzzle."
BJ stepped closer, pretending to act casual but clearly impressed. "Yeah, yeah, nice fruit. But you know, technically, I'm the hero of this retrieval. Just saying."
Serena rolled her eyes, plucking the fruit and revealing the smooth, gleaming blue emblem nestled inside. "Okay, hero, let's see if your hero skills help with the Moonlight Laser puzzle."
They followed a newly revealed corridor, where the chamber ahead was bathed in darkness, save for a series of crystal prisms mounted in elaborate patterns. At the far end, a panel glimmered faintly, inscribed with celestial markings. Milky Way's voice echoed once more. "Fourth trial: the Moonlight Laser. Align the beam of moonlight through the crystals to activate the emblem. Only precision and timing will succeed. Fail... and the path forward remains closed."
Serena examined the setup. A moonlight source flickered at the ceiling, its beam weak and scattered. She adjusted the prisms with careful hands, rotating each to reflect the beam toward the emblem. BJ leaned against the wall, smirking. "Wow, look at you, star girl. I'd be impressed if I weren't so distracted by how awesome this all looks."
"BJ, can you please—" Serena cut him off, concentrating as the moonbeam hit a prism and refracted perfectly onto the next. She moved with precision, one prism after another. The blue emblem pulsed faintly with every successful alignment. Finally, with the last crystal rotated, the moonlight beam struck the emblem directly. It glowed brilliantly, illuminating the chamber in a serene blue light. The panel at the far end slid open silently, revealing the next passageway. Milky Way's eye gleamed from the darkness. "Correct. The Moonlight Laser has been mastered. Your synchronization of reflection and focus is... commendable."
Serena let out a small sigh of relief, brushing snow, or whatever debris lingered in the dungeon, from her shoulders. "Easy enough, I guess. One more step closer to Raymond's gear."
BJ gave a dramatic bow. "See? Heroism, brains, style. I'm basically a walking multiverse solution."
Serena laughed, shaking her head. "Yeah, yeah. Let's just keep moving before he decides the next trial involves actual lasers... or worse." Together, they stepped through the open passage.

Milky Way's single glowing eye appeared in the center of the next chamber, floating ominously above a pedestal. On it rested a sturdy pickaxe, its handle polished and the blade gleaming faintly with a crimson hue. "Take this," Milky Way intoned. "The pickaxe will allow you to retrieve the red emblem. Precision and care are required. Afterwards, you must solve the Morse Code puzzle to advance. Only then will the path forward reveal itself fully."
Serena stepped forward, grasping the pickaxe with determination. "All right, here goes. Let's get the red emblem and move on."
BJ smirked beside her. "Finally, something I can actually break stuff with. My kind of challenge." They approached a jagged red crystal embedded in a rocky wall, glowing faintly. Serena carefully chipped around it with the pickaxe, her movements deliberate. BJ hovered nearby, occasionally offering unhelpful commentary: "Easy there, princess. Don't want to chip too much, or it'll lose its dramatic effect." After a tense few minutes, the red emblem was free, shimmering brilliantly in Serena's hands. "Got it," she said, holding it up triumphantly.
BJ whistled. "Nice work. Now, the Morse Code thing. Let's see...." Ahead, a panel lit up with a series of blinking lights and buttons, each representing dots and dashes. Serena's eyes narrowed as she decoded the pattern: a sequence of clicks and flashes forming a message. BJ, surprisingly, leaned in and pressed a few buttons haphazardly before Serena quickly corrected him, turning his randomness into productive input. Together, they matched the sequence perfectly. A low hum filled the room as a hidden compartment opened, revealing a small, glowing red emblem and the next passageway. Milky Way's voice echoed, approving but still ominous. "Correct. You have solved the Morse Code puzzle. Precision, teamwork, and focus have brought you far. Know this... you are almost done. Only a few trials remain before Raymond's memory card may be reclaimed."
Serena exhaled, holding both the blue and red emblems securely. "Almost done... let's just hope 'almost' doesn't mean another twelve-hour mind-bending puzzle."
BJ grinned, tossing the pickaxe casually over his shoulder. "Relax, princess. We've got this. Milky Way can't throw anything at us we can't handle... right?" Milky Way's single eye gleamed ominously from the shadows, leaving the two to step into the next chamber, hearts pounding but spirits high, ready for the final trials that would lead them to Raymond's gear.

The last chamber stretched before them, wider than any of the previous rooms, bathed in a soft, cosmic glow. Suspended in midair were three miniature planets, each orbiting a small axis that allowed them to tilt, spin, and sway. At the far end, a pedestal bore a carved inscription: "Balance the worlds to earn your prize." Milky Way's single, glowing eye hovered above the chamber. "Final trial: the Balancing Act. Only by placing the three planets in perfect equilibrium will the path to Raymond's memory card open. Misalignment will reset the trial."
Serena stepped forward, scanning the floating spheres. "Okay... precision. Timing. Weight distribution... this is going to take some serious coordination."
BJ grinned, rolling his shoulders like he was about to perform a stunt. "Coordination? I invented coordination. Watch and learn, princess."
Serena gave him a sharp look. "BJ, please, don't break the planets." They began carefully moving the planets along their axes. Each one shifted delicately, the slightest nudge sending the others swaying precariously. Serena measured the angles, whispering calculations under her breath, while BJ offered commentary, mostly exaggerated sighs and mock hero poses occasionally providing a stabilizing hand at just the right moment. Minutes passed, each adjustment bringing the planets closer to balance. Sweat beaded on Serena's brow, and BJ's grin remained cocky but increasingly focused. "Almost... there... just a hair to the left, careful! Too much, too much!" Serena instructed, holding her breath.
Finally, with a delicate push and a shared nod, the three planets aligned perfectly. They hovered motionless, glowing softly, as a deep hum resonated through the chamber. The pedestal slid aside, revealing a ladder that spiraled upward toward a shaft of glowing light. Milky Way's voice, approving yet echoing, filled the room. "Correct. Balance has been achieved. You have passed the final test. The path is open. Proceed, and claim what you seek."
Serena exhaled, a mix of relief and triumph washing over her. "We did it... we actually did it."
BJ gave a dramatic bow, brushing invisible dust from his jacket. "Balance, brains, and beauty. That's how it's done, princess." The two of them stepped forward together, climbing the ladder.
At the top of the ladder, Serena and BJ stepped into a small chamber bathed in soft, golden light. Floating gently before them, encased in a shimmering aura, was one of Raymond's missing gears—the one they had been chasing through the trials of the Milky Way's domain. Serena's heart leapt. "There it is... finally!"
BJ smirked, stretching his arms dramatically. "Told you, princess. Heroics, brains, and charm, nothing beats that combo."
Serena rolled her eyes but couldn't hide her grin as she carefully reached out and grabbed the gear. It felt weighty yet familiar, humming faintly in her hand as though recognizing its owner. Milky Way's single eye followed them from above, his voice echoing softly, almost like a sigh of approval. "You have succeeded in retrieving this piece. Few have completed my trials. You are... worthy."
Serena glanced at BJ, holding the gear like a trophy. "All right... next world. Let's keep moving before the Milky Way decides to throw another trial at us."
BJ grabbed his jacket and gave her a cocky grin. "Oh, don't worry, princess. Whatever comes next, we've got it. Milky Way's tests are just a warm-up. The real fun is out there, in the multiverse." Together, they activated the transport device at the edge of the chamber, the air around them humming and shimmering as the world began to blur and twist. Serena clutched the gear tightly, ready for whatever strange and perilous dimension awaited them next. And with a flash of light, they vanished, leaving the Milky Way's chamber behind, carrying another piece of Raymond closer to home.
