Chapter 15

The day after Harry, Ron and Draco left for their mission in Scotland, Ginny came to visit Hermione intending to spend the night with her. Ginny always felt nervous whenever Harry would leave for longer than a day and Hermione knew both could use the company of each other.

That evening they were both cuddled up on the couch, watching TV with two big mugs of tea clutched in their hands. Hermione had finally introduced Ginny to Korean dramas and the redhead was now in love with them.

"Seriously now, what was that all about?!" Ginny was exclaiming as soon as another episode ended. "What a load of... disappearing like that on her, like he was some big hero. He should have stayed with her if he loved her that much!" She finished with a loud huff, taking a big sip of tea.

Hermione chuckled and shook her head at her friend's passionate opinion. They had just finished an episode in which the male character breaks up with the female lead in order to protect her. Even though she was amused by Ginny's reaction, she had to agree with her. It really was stupid to leave someone because you love them. If you truly love someone, aren't you supposed to stay and protect that person, to care for her and shower her with affection?

Despite herself, Hermione thought of someone, his image forming clearly in her mind, his cold grey eyes staring at her intently. Was this a good time to ask Ginny about him? They were alone and with no one to interrupt them, but would her friend understand her sudden curiosity or would she misunderstand?

Clearing her throat and placing the cup on the table, Hermione turned to Ginny, who was battling with the remote control in order to start the next episode.

"Bloody contraption! How do you work this thing..." Ginny was muttering, pressing the buttons at random.

"Ginny..." Hermione started, shifting in her spot uncomfortably.

"Hm?" her friend said distractedly. She had finally managed to get the next episode started and was gaping at the screen.

"There is something I've been meaning to ask. It's about..." Hermione hesitated for a second, before taking a deep breath and continuing more confidently. "well, it's about Draco Malfoy."

Ginny turned her head to look at Hermione. Her eyes were wide in mild surprise, but not because of the subject itself, but rather because of the tone Hermione had when she said his name.

"What about him?" she asked, carefully studying Hermione.

"Well, we used to know him from school, right?" Hermione asked, trying to sound casual.

"Right." Ginny nodded.

"And he was a Slytherin, right?"

"Right." Ginny nodded again.

"Then what was our relationship? I mean how did we get along?" Hermione added quickly, seeing Ginny's eyebrows shooting up.

"Hm" Ginny pondered for a moment, thinking how to explain it better. "You two never got along well, quite the opposite. Harry and Ron hated his guts but what you and he had was... pretty intense. Two intelligent people snapping insults at each other."

Hermione's eyes went wide, as she started at her friend in disbelief. That seemed to make Ginny realize what she had said. She cursed inwardly, scolding herself for being too honest.

"But that is all in the past, Hermione. No one really remembers all that well what happened so many years ago." Ginny said quickly, waving a hand.

"I think Mr. Malfoy still remembers." Hermione said quietly, frowning in slight concentration.

Ginny let out a chuckle despite herself.

"You know, it's pretty funny hearing you call him Mister."

"Well, I don't really remember him, he's like a stranger to me. How am I supposed to call him, then?" Hermione said frustratedly.

"How about Draco? That is his name, isn't it?" Ginny said innocently.

"Draco?" Hermione mumbled to herself, completely unaware of the devious grin Ginny was giving her.

Harry may have told me not to tell Hermione too much about Draco and her past, but never mentioned anything about their future. Ginny thought to herself, feeling the grin spreading on her face.

Two days later, Harry's owl found Ginny at Hermione's flat. Hermione had just come back from work and the two girls were chatting leisurely on the couch. Upon seeing the beautiful white owl, Ginny got up and went to take the letter. While reading it, Hermione noticed her friend's face darkened.

"What's the matter? Did something happen?" Hermione asked, a slight tremor in her voice as she got up as well.

"They are all in St. Mungo's. Apparently they were attacked." Ginny said, looking up from the letter. Hermione had to admire the composure her friend was showing, considering the situation.

"Let's go! I'm coming with you." Hermione said simply, picking up her coat and getting ready to Apparate.

Ginny nodded, and without saying another word the two of them held hands as they Apparated to the hospital. Once there, they asked at the Information Desk where they could find Harry Potter and the rest of his team. They were told the Aurors could be found in the ward for treatment of spell damage.

As soon as they reached the corridor taking to the ward in question, Hermione saw Blaise walking in their direction. He looked serious and was muttering something inaudible.

"Blaise!" Hermione shouted, making the wizard look up in surprise.

"Hermione, Mrs. Potter." He said addressing them with a smile. "I see you already found out."

"Yes, Harry sent me an owl just now." Ginny said. "How are they?" she inquired with a nervous look.

"They're fine, at least Potter and Weasley are. A bit scratched here and there but nothing too serious. I just finished patching up the other idiot, though. He got himself sliced pretty badly." Blaise said with a grimace. "Bloody fool." He added with a huff. "You can go inside if you want. They are just about to take their treatment potions."

And with that Blaise took off, leaving Hermione and Ginny to look at each other in nervous silence. When they finally entered the room, they saw Harry and Ron sitting upright on the left side beds, while Draco was laying down on a bed to the right. His left arm was entirely covered with bandages and had patches on several places on his torso and face.

"Shut up, Potter! And you too Weasel! I swear if you two don't cut it off I will..." Draco was saying, grimacing from the pain.

It appeared the other two were teasing him about something, while he was trying to get into a more comfortable position. He stopped moving as soon as he saw Hermione and Ginny walking into the room. His eyes went wide, fixated on Hermione, who was also watching him intensely.

"Harry James Potter, what is the meaning of this?!" Ginny broke the silence, making everybody jump, especially her husband, who suddenly was shrinking in front of his wife's wrath.

"What do you mean, honey?" he asked in a small voice, trying to smile up at Ginny.

"How in Godric's name did you manage to get yourself hurt?" Ginny huffed, frowning at Harry, placing her hands on her hips in a very Molly Weasley way.

"Honey, I am not that hurt. I'm quite alright. Just a small scratch here and there, but that is all." Harry assured her quickly, pointing at a small scratch on his right cheek and another one up his right arm.

Ginny let out a loud huff, but, nevertheless bent down to kiss him tenderly. Ron made a face before changing it to a smile when Ginny rounded up on him instead.

"And you, what were you doing instead of helping?" Ginny snapped at Ron.

"I... I was fighting my ass of, that's what I was doing." Ron spluttered indignantly. "I was just about to take one of them down when this stupid ferret came along and decided to play the hero." Ron said, gesturing towards Draco, who visibly flinched when he saw Ginny turning to him and frowning fiercely.

This woman is bloody scary. Wonder how Potter managed to stay alive until now. Draco thought to himself, unable to stop a shiver going down his spine. All this time, he was unaware of the concentrated stares Hermione was giving him.

"Ferret?" she finally said quietly, looking at Draco.

Draco gulped and looked at Harry for salvation, who instead looked at his wife. Ginny sighed and waved a hand airily.

"That's not important right now. Tell us what happened. And you better not miss a thing, Harry Potter or else..." Ginny looked dangerously at her husband. It was his turn to gulp.

"Of course, Ginny dear. What happened was... well we got attacked. It wasn't a large group, but they seemed prepared, like they knew we would be there. The moment they saw us, they started throwing curses and hexes at us. We managed to immobilize some of them, but they were too much for us. Malfoy saw one of them getting ready to throw a slicing curse at me and pushed me out of the way, getting hurt instead." Harry finished, giving Draco a strange look. It appeared that the mission helped them get closer, if not as friends, at least enough to be partners.

"But we managed to catch one of them and brought him along with us." Ron piped up grinning proudly, then his grin fell slowly. "Though, we don't know if he will be able to talk anytime soon."

"What do you mean by that?" Hermione and Ginny asked in the same time.

"Fe... Malfoy here" Ron corrected himself quickly "was pretty overzealous with his curses and knocked out the guy so badly that the doctors say it's unsure when he will regain consciousness."

"Hey, I was in a lot of pain and couldn't really control my magic." Draco said defensively, seeing how everyone was now staring at him in disbelief.

Before anyone was able to say another word, Hermione got closer to his bed. In the meantime, Ginny ushered her husband and brother to take their potions in order to give the other two a bit of privacy.

"Are you alright, Mr. Malfoy? Does it hurt now?" Hermione asked quietly, worry laced in her voice as she approached his bed.

"No, it doesn't hurt that much." Draco said, avoiding to look into her eyes. "And you can stop calling me Mister now. It's pretty weird and, might I add, disturbing." he said with a grimace. "I used to call you Granger all the time, so you can call me Ma..."

"Draco." Hermione blurted out, suddenly remembering the conversation she had with Ginny the other day.

At the sound of his name coming from her, Draco stopped breathing altogether. He stared at her in shock, afraid to even blink. Harry and Ron chocked on their potions, taking raspy breaths of air, while Ginny simply chuckled.
