A Green Dream

He awoke in a bright empty room with a numb feeling in his right arm. His eyes pulsating off rhythm with his steady heart beat. Every pulsation rang against his skull, forcing a massive headache onto him.

"The last thing i remember was, Laura, my girlfriend and I drinking a few beers and laughing at the latest episode of Archer." He thought to himself. Her smile is much too vivid in his mind for him to dispel the thought. "Where had she gone to? Knowing her she was probably called into work early..."

A man wearing a long lab coat walked into the empty room and nodded his head to acknowledge the poor man. The confused fellow sort of staggered to his feet, still dazed, and grunted at the lab coat. The scientist looked familiar to him some how. After reading off of his clipboard he spoke in a loud tone but very clear and proper dialect.

"Mr. Hazen your results are astonishing. We feel as though the operation went too perfectly. May i ask how are you feeling?"

"Huh? Operation? What are you talking about?"

"The false memory operation you agreed to test for us. As you know this is the first memory installation operation in history as of yet so we did expect some complications, but so far everything is positive. I would like to ask you a few questions to make sure the memories we installed are indeed in place. What is your name?"

"Oh god, my.. My name? It's James. James Hazen. Age 32. I work as a international marketing advisor."

"Yes, very good. What is the last thing you can recall?" The sound of pencil scratching against paper, filled the room. Tension rose and James began to sweat.

"I uh... Laura! Where is Laura?"

"Mhm. Very nice. It seems we were correct to assume that the operation went too well. The false memories seemed to have overridden your core memories."

"What? What core memories doc?"

"Your brain accepted the false memories as truth and in doing so, fabricated your entire life around them. Your real name is-"

The room became dimly lit and a low green light flashed. The man with the clipboard quickly excused himself and left the room.

"None of this is making sense." James rested the palm of his hand against his forehead. "Memory installations and fabrications?"

The lights returned to its bright florescent glow. James walked over to the door, that the strange scientist left through, and turned the knob.

A long empty hall way stretched off in the distance and seemed to curve to the right. The excessive amount of lights in the hall indicated quite clearly that this department was underground.

"Where the hell am I?" James ignored his budding sense of panic and attempted to calm himself with the thought of Laura's smile. "She must be here somewhere." He sighed heavily.

As James advanced down the long narrow hall, he noticed that the doors lining the walls were of different shades of green. The shades were so close to one another that the only difference he could see was once every 5th door was a darker shade. Upon reaching the curve in the hall, the lights began to once again dim. The green doors became vibrant sources of light. A low hum echoed through the hall followed by a sudden scream.

More alert to his situation, James ran.
