17// luna and heartbreaks
The urgency of Damien's voice sent back the same apprehensive feeling I felt two years ago at the convenience store where my dad died. My heart beats so fast as Luna and I followed Damien to the rock we were jumping off a while ago.
"Why? What happened?" Luna asked, her voice crammed with concern as we firmly fought the current below the water to get to the rock.
"Well, we were jumping having fun, and it's been like five minutes and Kayden hasn't come out from the water yet," Damien said as we got to the rock and saw the others appearing and disappearing at the surface of the pool probably looking for Kayden underneath the water.
The water from the pool that was on my neck seemed to strangle me when I heard what Damien said. Considering Kayden was a tall guy, he must have hit his head after he jumped off the rock since a five feet pool for him was just like three feet.
I heard Luna cursed under her breath as she joined the others under the water to look for Kayden. I did the same.
I swam underneath the pool as I spread my arms and legs, pushing myself in the depths of the blue-green pool.
Yet there's no sign of Kayden, only the indistinct sound of the water ringing in my ears as I feel more liquid enter through it.
I swam back to the surface of the pool for I couldn't hold my breath anymore because of the rapid beating of my heart caused by my anxiety that made it harder for me to stay under the water for too long.
Around the site, there are authorized people they call rangers whom you can go to for any concerns.
I looked around to find any ranger nearby but didn't find any since they roam around and don't stay in one place. But heck, I'm willing to hike no matter how long it will take me to find a ranger to help us with our situation because I can't afford to lose another person I know.
"Guys, I am going to look for a ranger!" I yelled at them and was about to get myself out from the pool when a familiar voice echoed.
"Ha! I gotcha all!"
We all paused in our places and looked at the direction where the voice came from and slowly Kayden emerged behind the falls with his soppy blonde hair and a beaming smile.
"Dude! That's not cool!" Nico yelled at Kayden and threw water at his face as soon as he got to the rock where we all looked at him with bewilderment.
"Y'all really thought I drowned? I am sorry, I was just joking," Kayden said, and we all shook our heads.
"You asshole! That was not funny" Luna's irate voice echoed as she walked beside Kayden and before he could answer back, she yanked his neck and pushed him down into the water several times.
I came from a family whose parents have a good relationship with each other. Back when dad was still alive there was nothing I could ask for more when it comes to parents' love, because both gave me enough love and that was until my dad died.
Sure they fight sometimes but it never came to a point where my mom drowns my dad just like what I am seeing right now.
From afar we watched our acting mother, Luna with her clenched teeth drowning our acting father, Kayden as he coughed water whenever Luna lifts him off from under the water and pushes him back again.
"I think our parents need a divorce." William suggested.
"Yeah, I think so too," Nico said with his hands on his hips.
"I don't know if this is the worst or best family I've been through." Erin butted in.
"I couldn't agree more." Damien uttered.
"My children...," Kayden said between coughs as his wet soppy hair blocked his face and reached his hand to us, "save me." He continued as if it was saying his last words before Luna, again pushed him under the water.
I know I've mentioned this earlier, but I will say it again.
This is indeed one heck of a disorderly family.
"Hey, girls, do you have any idea how I can convince Luna to talk to me again? Because to be honest I am not the most experienced when it comes to these kinds of things," Kayden asked, popping between me and Erin as we hiked back to our campsite.
"Aren't you like 21?" Erin asked, "I'm pretty sure you have been to a lot of relationships and probably already knew how to handle these kind of situations."
"I've been through relationships, but not a lot. And I told you I suck at this." Kayden whined.
Technically, our acting parents were having a love quarrel at the moment and now Kayden can't get his ass at one place for Luna was giving him the silent treatment after drowning him several times.
Now, I am not an expert when it comes to love relationships. I had a few of them but none I considered a serious one because it would be either puppy love or out of grief because I just wanted a company instead of commitment. But I think I knew one thing that will help Kayden.
My dad always says to me that the reason he fell in love with mom was that she was a marvellous cook and I couldn't agree more. My mom's cooking skills is outstanding.
That was one reason why I never totally hated Nico. Because way back in our school in Sunnyvale I used to eat my lunch by the picnic table at the playground and Nico would always come to me and ask for a part of my lunch for he always thought my mom's cooking was delectable.
"Are you familiar with the saying: The way to a man's heart is through his stomach? Well, we're going to break gender roles here. I suggest you to cook for Luna or should I say for us since what you did earlier was uncool," I answered to Kayden as the sandy trail covers my wet toes.
Kayden shrugged, "I can do that. I graduated from a culinary school."
As an apology, Kayden cooked us dinner while Erin, Damien, and I watched him with our legs folded on the ground, water dripping from our hair and body as he does his magic with the portable stove.
Meanwhile the two guys were preparing their hammocks and Luna was sitting at the picnic table with her earphones on.
The smoke coming out from the pan sent a scent of varieties of herbs you can put in your food. Despite having a small portable stove, Kayden managed to cook big food in it.
Erin sniffed the smoke as much as she could and asked Kayden, "What are you making, anyway?"
"It's Pesto," Kayden uttered as he drained the water of the pasta and poured the green sauce he was cooking earlier that bombarded our campsite with its organic smell.
"Oh, Luna loved that pasta," William said as his feet appeared beside the portable stove that was now turned off.
"Really? You think she'll talk to me again if I make her tons of this?" Kayden asked as he mixed the pasta with its sauce.
"Depends if she likes you," William replied and I knew he was trying to catch Kayden off guard so that his suspiciousness will be fulfilled.
Kayden stopped mixing the pasta for a moment before he answered back, "Does she like me?"
"Why? Do you like her?" William asked back, his fingers strumming at his side.
Kayden answered back immediately, "I never said that."
"You never said you didn't."
"Guys, don't y'all think we're taking this roleplay too seriously?" Damien butted in.
"Yeah, you're right," Kayden stood up as he carried the pan of pasta, "Let's eat." and he walked out.
Erin and Damien trailed behind him as I stood up from my sitting position and William walked towards me.
"You think he's a good guy?" William asked me.
"I think so, but what's there to worry about if Luna has a cousin like you?" William just nodded and together we walked to the picnic table for our dinner.
The cooking method was a failure. Despite the visibly fascinated face of Luna to Kayden's pasta, she hasn't yet uttered a single word to him.
With that, as the sky becomes darker, Kayden's face becomes gloomier too and he thumped his way to his hammock to sleep his fiasco away.
My back laid flat at the soft sleeping bag underneath my body as I looked up to nothingness but the solid color of the top of the tent whilst I heard a soft snore from Erin beside me.
The night was pretty deep, but I saw a faint light coming from the picnic table outside illuminating the darkness.
I stepped outside the tent to look for the source of light as the cold wind hit my skin together with the sounds of crickets and the hushed strumming of William's guitar filling my ears.
William landed his gaze on me and I was quickly reminded about what he said earlier at the falls about Luna.
He nodded in my direction to acknowledge my presence and I walked towards him as it was this time I needed my suspiciousness to be filled up. But as I was halfway to William's hammock, I heard the tent's entrance zipper and saw Luna come out.
"Hey, you're still awake," I called out to her as I sat at the picnic table.
Luna sat beside me, "I can't sleep."
"Why is that?"
Luna was quiet for a meantime before she let out a heavy sigh, "Do you remember what I told you about falling earlier?" I nodded at her question, "I think it's happening again."
I gasped and looked at her, "You like Kayden?" I whispered scream, and she covered my mouth immediately as she put her index finger on her lips and pointed at William who was busy strumming his guitar with the sound of the flowing river bed.
I removed her hand on my mouth, "Why? I think Kayden is a good guy," Luna looked down on her palms.
"But I don't want to be broken again," she protested to me.
"I'm guessing this has something to do with your past."
"Yes," Luna let out a low groan of frustration, "It was junior year. He wasn't my first boyfriend, yet I thought he was the best. But he wasn't."
"Would you mind telling?" I asked her, and she took a deep breath.
"Okay but this is going to be some long story."
"I'm all ears," I said, pointing a finger in my ears.
