Introduction
It's a strange feeling; losing someone you love.
You don't feel different at first, because your brain almost doesn't let you believe that they're actually gone. But, when you reach for your phone to call them, because Noah Lankishire complimented you in maths class, your body goes numb. The macaroni you ate for lunch churns slowly as your stomach muscles tense up, you can feel your heart sinking like it's been tied down to a rock, you can't blink- if you blink that means it's real and it can't be real.
You're sitting there, very still, almost silent, completely empty.
You realise that you won't see them on Tuesdays in art class as they flirt with Thomas Olsen even though he's dating Peya Ruus; They're not going to be in the school library on Saturday mornings, studying science because they want to pass the big exam more than Sarah Kahn, the nurses daughter. You expect the skies to be sombre and grey, and that the world would just stop, floating aimlessly in the empty abyss of space. But, as I sit here, underneath the warmth of May's summer rays, there are people talking and cars roaring down the street and music blaring from gardens and the world is moving on without her.
Mum and dad are sat in the kitchen. Their chairs are pushed beside each other, but they feel so far apart. They're not drinking tea, their cups are in the cupboard, covered in a layer of dust. Mum isn't wearing her charm bracelet, it's rusting on the fireplace, along with her wedding ring. Dad hasn't been on his phone in a while, I'm pretty sure he didn't watch the football game last night, I didn't hear him shouting at the TV. They're sitting together, but they're not together, and they're talking.
"-school, on Monday. I think it would be good for her"
"She's just lost one of her best friends Michelle, give the poor girl a rest"
"But, Peter, honey-"
They're arguing again. Well, it's mostly mum arguing with herself. She doesn't let dad talk, she shuts him down and then she leaves. They're doing that a lot more now that I'm always at home.
Going back to school. That doesn't sound too bad, right? Crappy canteen food, a sea of faded blue blazers and unfamiliar faces, hallways too small for eight hundred children.
Apart from, you won't notice things like that anymore. You'll notice the straining feeling as you walk past locker number 709, the red one that held her psychics book and purple highlighters. You'd anxiously pass the music room and still be able to hear her playing the piano, and failing, but having so much fun that nobody tries to stop her. You can't bear to walk through the corridor outside of the assembly hall, where she'd dance around on her tip toes, swinging her golden locks two beats behind her.
And that's when it begins to hurt.
"Missing sixteen year old Teala Greene was pronounced dead on Thursday at 9:25 pm, after following the four week investigation of her disappearance"
