GIRLHOOD, MEDUSA, AND FEMALE RAGE
Immediately I recall Caravaggio's painting of Medusa, feared by the male heroes of Greek mythology. I am thirteen and I stand in an art gallery, marble floors shining and my breath echoing around the room. Medusa has her mouth open in a bloody, hysterical scream, her head decapitated; it is silenced by the glass separating the painting from me. It reflects my face over her own— a mirror. I am sixteen now, and I want to scream. Rage. Cry. We are told not to.
My head, firmly attached to my neck, writhes with snakes of questions about this. I have no snakes for hair, yet my own contentious relationship with the concepts of beauty and ugliness seems to explain my having some sharp edges. When girls are weighed on the scale of beauty, of worth — am I not allowed to simply exist? — the scale places rage on the negative end. Medusa is given trauma, has it forced down her throat and into her lungs;
Medusa is given a blade to her neck for daring to be mad about it.
Girls are given trauma, and they are given no place to put it down.

marnie aakster was LOST for months in the woods when the monsters came.
she'd been with her friends on a camping trip for spring break, a fun and relaxing break from society that quickly turned rancorous when it was revealed that allie paige was fucking scott "lucky" macleaver.
normally, dating in their friend group wasn't frowned upon, and in fact was fairly common, considering the tight bond they had (emphasis on had) with each other, but the reality was that lucky was a dirty cheater. his girlfriend, leslie matthews, obviously didn't like that, and from there, the situation simply tumbled downhill. and marnie aakster was caught in the middle of it. the rising of the dead added on top of that: it was easy that their group dispersed.
only one of the members were alive as far as marnie knew, but even that information was uncertain once the pair were forced apart.
marnie didn't keep track of the time that she was missing for, if she was even missing at all. there was no one to miss her at all, no one who even knew she was gone in the first place. but, maybe missing is what she was, because that's what she was doing. she missed having her friends for company, she missed modern conveniences, and she missed not having to fight for her life every day. she missed, and she was missing.

marnie aakster was FOUND by a man named otis, who worked as a farmhand for the greene family. when she was found, she was almost ready to give up. bested by the state of the world around her— the loneliness, the fear, the lack of hope— marnie was on the search for a place to rest, for good. and that's what she found, but not in the way she had previously been looking for.
the greene's let her into their house, and they took care of her. they taught her to work on their farm, to hunt for food, to they were the family she'd always wanted. they cared for her, and loved her. and she loved them back.
during her stay, she'd made close friends with beth greene, who felt more like a friend than alice, lucky, or even leslie ever felt.
all of this changed when rick grimes arrived with his son, who'd accidentally been shot. and with rick's arrivle, he brought nothing but trouble.
