Basically the nightmare that Cross and the others meet isn't nightmare but rather an evil entity called the corruption.

nightmare is in fact being possessed by the entity.

However the entity is using brainwashing and mind control on nightmares gang so that they don't know it isn't really nightmare.

Nightmares gang actually joined nightmare of their own free will and he sees them as family.

Nightmare looks like his passive form and the corruption looks like nightmares aggressive form.

Nightmare possessed looks like himself but corrupted.
