The sun had barely risen when the cell door burst open and the three of them were dragged out. They struggled but could do nothing as they were brought out into a square by the harbour and chained to the wall. Hands and feet to stop them from running away. Around them were longs lines of other unfortunate souls who had been captured. At the head of the square was a podium where the slavers they recognised from yesterday were gathered. Screams echoed over the cobbles and they turned their heads.
"What's happening?" Eustace whispered. Otto and Lucy didn't answer.
"No!" A woman cried. A wooden wagon was being pulled down the street by a pair of black horses. It was full of people. People in worn clothes were chained inside. A woman was screaming, hands reaching out as a man chased after her. He was calling. A little girl no older than eleven in a pale pink dress was crying behind them.
"Mummy!"
The man reached out, barely brushing the woman's hands before the slavers were pulling him back. A punch to the face sent him sprawling in the dust. The little girl running to his side. "Mummy!"
"Stay with Daddy!" The woman called. Her hands gripping the chains.
"Don't worry!" The man called. "I will find you". The wagon was dragged out of sight. Otto reached out and Lucy took his hand. Her skin was pale. Eustace was trembling slightly and Otto watched as she took his hand as well.
Soon three boat appeared out on the sea. The prisoners from the wagon all chained up in the rowboats as they all began to float further and further out. Thunder rumbled and Lucy gripped his hand tighter as the sky darkened suddenly. It was so sudden that it was unnatural. Dark magic that curled over the bright sun. Otto blinked as green smoke, like most but moving with a mind of its own, began to curl over the still waters. It coiled like snakes and he shuddered. Fear suddenly pulling at him as the smoke approached the rowboats. The prisoners began screaming. Then the smoke twisted around them until they weren't visible. Then the smoke drew back and the boats were gone. The mist faded and the clouds cleared.
"Alright!" A slaver called, clapping his hands to capture the attention of the crowds that were beginning to gather. "Shows over. Let's begin the sale!" Loud cheers.
Otto, Lucy and Eustace watched as three people were sold. The crowd bidding on them like farm animals. A young skinny man with limp greedy hair was sold to a merchant ship. A middle aged woman was sold as a servant and a old woman wasn't bid on at all and was shoved to the side for the sacrifice. That was what the rowboats were, sacrifices to the green mist. If they weren't sold, they were sacrificed. Otto didn't like either option.
"Come on", a slaver grabbed Otto by the arm as he unchained him from the wall. "You're next". Lucy gasped and tried to reach for him as he was pulled away. He was half dragged, half marched over to the podium where he was lifted up onto the tree stump for the crowd to see.
"Here!" The head slaver gestured. "We have a good looking young man. He's a bit scarred and battered but that just adds to his charm, hey?" The crowd laughed. Otto shivered in disgust at all the gazes on him.
"Hey boy look over here!" Someone shouted.
"Turn your face this way!"
Laughter and jeering. "Fuck off!" Otto snapped. A slaver walked up and punched him in the stomach. He doubled over in pain as the jeers redoubled.
"He's a feisty one", the announcer laughed. "Let's start at twenty".
"Twenty five!"
"I bid thirty!"
"I bid forty!"
"Fifty!"
"I bid sixty!"
"Eighty!"
"One hundred!" A voice called. The crowed fell silent. The announced grinned.
"Sold! One hundred!" Coins exchanged hands and a sign was hung over Otto's head. He flinched at the touch then gasped as he was pulled, stumbling from the stump and shoved into a corner.
"And now we have a little lady!" The announcer called as Lucy was dragged out. The bidding commenced and Otto could see her hunching in as the crowd jeered at her. Eventually she was sold for a hundred and fifty . She shrieked as she was lifted up and deposited next to Otto.
"Are you okay?" He asked in a whisper.
"That was horrible", Lucy whispered back bitterly.
It was Eustace's turn. The small blonde boy was trembling as he was lifted up onto the stump. "And here we have this fine specimen", the announcer gestured. "Who'll kick off the bidding? Come on now". The crowd was silent. "He may not look like much but, uh, he's strong".
"He's strong alright", a man said. "Smells like the rear end of a Minotaur". The men laughed. Eustace looked offended by the statement, the indignant anger winning out over his fear.
"That is an outrageous lie. I won the school hygiene award two years running". The crowd just laughed more. Otto looked up behind him at the sound of a door banging open. Behind him was a stone ramp leading down from the cells and into the square. They had been marched down it earlier. His lit up in relief at the sight of Caspian and Edmund being escorted down. Caspian met his gaze and winked. Otto bit back a grin and nudged Lucy. She looked up and sighed in relief at the sight of her brother.
It must have been a signal that they were waiting for. "Come on!" The announcer pleaded. "Some one make a bid!"
"I'll take the, off your hands", a familiar voice called out. "I'll take them all off your hands". In the crowd men threw off their hoods and drew their swords. "For narnia!" Reepicheep's voice echoed round the square.
"For narnia!" Otto shouted back as he tackled the slaver nearest to them. Lucy turning and kicking one between the legs as Otto used the weight of his chains to knock one out. The square descended into a full out brawl as other slaves joined in. Reepicheep scurried over and Otto grinned at him. "Hi. I'm very glad to see you".
"As I am too your majesty", Reep bowed back. "Now let me help you with your chains". He twirled his sword and Otto held out his hands. The mouse unlocked the manacles with a few flicks of his blade and they fell away. Lucy held out hers too.
"Thanks Reep", she grinned. "I knew you'd come". Then she promptly grabbed a slaver's arm and twisted it. Otto grabbed a large book from the table where all the money was being kept. He threw it and she caught it.
"Your highness", the mouse bowed again. He laughed as Lucy smacked a few slavers round the face with the heavy book then scampered away. Otto had grabbed a slaver's Lance, twisting it out of the man's hands snapping him across the face with the pole. He tripped up a few more but the fighting was coming to an end. The local people had come out with their own weapons. Greatly outnumbered, the slavers had surrendered and had been locked up in their own cells and with the very same manacles they had out on the people they had captured. The crew of the dawn treader let the local people round them up.
"Otto! Lucy!" He turned to see Caspian and Edmund crossing the square. Lucy grinned and waved as the two of them drew close.
"Good hit with that book", Edmund greeted.
"Otto", Caspian grinned and pulled him into a hug. Otto wrapped his arms round Caspian and hugged him back equally as fiercely, relieved that the other was okay. "Are you alright?" Caspian asked as he pulled back.
Otto smiled. "Just bruises, they treated me better than your uncle did". Caspian chuckled at the joke, fingers rubbing gently over the bruises round his neck. "Caspian. I'm fine. Are you alright?"
"Just bruises", Caspian smiled. Otto grinned and hugged him again. The two of them wrapping their arms round the other in relief. "You need to stop getting captured", Caspian chuckled into Otto's shoulder.
"If I ever get captured again, you'll come and rescue me".
"Always".
