Chapter 3
Andy gave Draco a knowing look when he arrived to pick up Teddy.
"What?"
"Friends, huh?," she teased with a knowing smile.
"That changes nothing, it's just a formality."
"You gave Harry an inch, he'll take a mile."
"We don't even use those units of measurement!"
"Be gentle with him, Draco. He came over to bring Teddy to school this morning and he was positively beaming. Couldn't stop talking about how excited he was to be seeing you more often."
"I see him frequently, I don't see how a new label matters," Draco brushed off.
"It's all in the interactions."
"I just mock and make fun of him."
"I didn't think I would have to spell it out for you of all people Draco, but you seemingly cannot grasp the concept that other people actually care about you."
"Not other people, just him," Draco corrected.
"Your interactions mimic those that you had in school, correct?"
"More or less."
"Exactly. That hasn't changed. Why do you keep up the act?"
"That's how it's always been between myself and Potter."
"And you've never thought that he might feel the same way? That he might enjoy the teasing because you're not treating him any differently? For the first time in years, he has hope."
"Why are you telling me this?"
"Because I need you to understand what's at stake here. Teddy needs the stability. Harry needs the stability, and I know that you do too. Don't push him away when he starts extending olive branches. He's very caring, and dotes on those that he cares about. Let him."
"Aunt Andromeda-"
"That's enough of that. He's waiting for you and Teddy and he's prepared a nice meal. Go."
Draco went upstairs to retrieve Teddy, who was excitedly talking about getting to spend the rest of his day with both Harry and Draco.
"It's like Christmas!," he declared.
"Do you want to bring one toy with you to see Potter?," Draco asked.
"Harry," Teddy corrected. "I have toys at his house, but I think I'll bring my wolf stuffie."
"Fantastic choice. Shall we?"
Teddy giggled as he grabbed Draco's hand.
"Bye grandma!"
"Goodbye Teddy, have a wonderful time! You too Draco."
"Of course we will, we're seeing Harry!"
"Hold on tightly," Draco instructed, preparing them to apparate.
Teddy did as instructed, closing his eyes and focusing as Draco brought them to Harry's.
"Amazing job Teddy! You did so well," Draco praised, picking him up.
Teddy giggled, climbing onto Draco's shoulders as Harry opened the door.
"Harry!," he cheered.
"There's my Teddy bear," Harry greeted fondly, moving over so they could come inside. "Hello Malfoy."
"Draco," Teddy corrected.
"We just call each other by our last names Teddy, it's a thing we do."
"Why?"
"I dunno. Malfoy started it when we were 11 and we never stopped."
"You don't call Auntie Hermione or Uncle Ron by their last names."
"That's different."
"Why?," Teddy asked in confusion, holding on to his stuffie.
"Other people don't call you Teddy bear right?," Harry tried again.
"Right."
"They're just special names we call each other."
"Draco, why don't I have a special name?!"
Draco pinched the bridge of his nose.
"We'll have to find one then, don't we?"
Teddy nodded very solemnly.
"Come along then Edward," Draco said with a sigh.
Teddy giggled, poking Draco's cheek.
"That's my name, silly!"
"Ah, but does anyone call you Edward?"
Looking thoughtful, Teddy slowly shook his head.
"Can I show you my room now?"
"Lead the way Edward."
Teddy happily babbled on as he gave Draco a full house tour, and neither Draco nor Harry corrected him. The look of utter fondness on Harry's face was too much for Draco to bear, so he looked elsewhere.
"Dinner smells good," Draco complimented, watching as Teddy examined all of the books laid out in front of him.
"I hope you like it. I'll need a list of all of your favorite and least favorite foods. Since we'll be spending so much time together," Harry added.
"Really?!," Teddy asked excitedly.
"Really Teddy bear."
Teddy clapped excitedly before climbing up into Draco's lap with a book.
"Read to me?," he asked, eyes shining.
How could Draco say no? So he sat, reading animatedly to Teddy, unaware that Harry was listening with a grin on his face in the kitchen. The table was set and the food was laid out, but Harry propped himself in the doorway to watch Draco finish the story.
"You should read me a story every night!"
"Replacing me already Teddy? I'm hurt."
"Shh, then I get two stories! Three if grandma reads to me."
"I don't know where this love of books came from."
"Harry! He buys me lots and lots!"
"Potter? You read?"
"It's crazy, I do have the ability to read yes. It's amazing what you have time for when you're not D-Y-I-N-G," Harry spelt out. "Dinner is ready now."
"Yummy! Harry is the best food maker," Teddy announced proudly, holding his arms up for Harry to lift him.
"Well I'm glad you think so," Harry replied, rubbing his nose against Teddy's.
Teddy sat in between them, with Harry cutting up his food so that he could eat, and wiping Teddy's mouth in between feeding himself.
"Merlin, this is good."
"Stop by for dinner any time," Harry offered, shrugging his shoulders. "I enjoy cooking, especially for others, and I always make too much."
"Perhaps."
"Ice cream?," Teddy asked, gently placing down his fork.
"Not yet Teddy bear. You need to let your food digest, and Malfoy and I are still eating. Why don't you play with one of your toys?"
"My practice snitch?"
"Play with your train for now. We'll play with the snitch when I can watch you. That's the deal, remember?"
"Okay Harry! May I be 'scused?"
"You may," Harry and Draco answered in tandem.
Harry watched him go back to the living room with a soft smile on his face, the expression remaining even as he looked at Draco.
"I have to ask, where were the vegetables on his plate?"
Harry grinned, and leaned in as if he were sharing a government secret.
"There's 2 cups blended in the pasta sauce."
"Absolutely genius!"
"I dunno if you cook, but I'll send you home with the recipe."
"Thank you."
"I think we should do weekly dinners with Teddy. Ice cream not always included. It could be nice."
Draco considered it. What else did he have going on, honestly? He hated to admit it, but his old Potter curiosities were returning, and he needed answers.
"It beats takeout, that's for sure."
"Those are whatever night of the week I basically sleep at the office."
"You need a better work-life balance Potter," Draco chided.
"You're not wrong. You saw what happened. They won't stop until they have me wrapped around their finger."
"Then cut off their circulation," Draco replied, watching Harry over the top of his wine glass.
Harry laughed, shaking his head, eyes sparkling with mirth.
"You may be right with that one."
If Harry was surprised that Draco offered to dry the dishes while he washed, Harry didn't show it. Honestly, they made a great team and finished quickly.
"Thanks."
"Thank you for the meal."
"Like I said, any time. I promise there won't be any kiwi," Harry teased.
"I can't promise that I won't get bored and make more badges."
"If you do, I'll pass them out at work. I'm sure there's a list of people who would love to wear one. Myself included some days."
"Self-loathing will only make you more loveable by the public I fear."
"Disgusting," Harry replied, wrinkling his nose.
Draco couldn't help but laugh.
"That's the way I've felt since we were 11 you know. Famous Harry Potter this and famous Harry Potter that."
"Really? I remember more training for the ballet Potter? Dementor scares, tree climbing, duels. Scarhead this and Scarhead that, the occasional Potty. Such a creative type you were."
"Were? I take offense to that Scarhead."
"You have time to prove me wrong," Harry replied with a grin, nudging Draco's shoulder with his own.
"Still one of my favorite hobbies. You're wrong so often."
"I hope you're right."
With that, Harry was off to the living room to play with Teddy.
Both Harry and Draco were in agreement that Teddy was a natural born seeker.
"Look at that Scarhead, I think he may be the new youngest Seeker of the century."
"With the both of us raising him? He better be or else we're failures as parents."
He and Potter... Coparenting. Who would've thought. He couldn't help the first giggle that escaped his throat.
"What?," Harry asked, head tilted in confusion.
"This is not how I thought my life would turn out. Coparenting with Harry Potter."
"We'll practically be married."
"I want to be the ring bear!"
"Ring bearer- actually, it would be the ring bear since you're my Teddy bear huh?," Harry teased, tickling Teddy.
He squealed and squirmed in delight, sounds only getting louder as Harry blew raspberries on his stomach.
"Draco! He-help! Ahhh!"
"If you tickle me Potter you'll lose your hands," Draco threatened, moving in to save Teddy.
"And just what would you do with my hands hmm?"
Draco had a few ideas.
"Beat you with them and ask why you were hitting yourself of course," he said sweetly instead.
Harry was shocked into laughter.
"I don't think I'll ever get over just how funny you are."
"Don't. I need an ego boost every now and then."
Draco should've known that Harry would take that to heart.
"Ice cream?"
They got ready to go, and Teddy insisted on riding on Harry's shoulders while also holding Draco's hand. This resulted in Harry and Draco standing a little too close together for Draco's comfort, but he had to admit that Harry's strong presence was comforting. He felt invincible, something he never thought he would feel again, and he walked with his head held high.
"Basic vanilla?"
"Pardon?"
"You look like your favorite flavor is basic vanilla. But that could be deceiving. It's probably something obscure like banana."
"Use your Auror skills to figure it out, Potter."
"Hmm. It's probably not even ice cream. I bet it's custard. Probably some kind of twist."
"Well you look like you like some kind of monstrosity filled with candy," Draco huffed.
"Guilty as charged," Harry replied with a grin.
"We're here!," Teddy cheered.
"Alright Teddy bear, what do you want?"
"Chocolate ice cream with gummy bears."
"Kiddy sized for him please. I'll have a large rocky road. Draco?"
Draco was so taken aback by the usage of his first name that he almost forgot to answer.
"Large orange vanilla custard twist please."
Harry paid before Draco could even react.
"Can we see the ducks?," Teddy asked after they got their ice cream.
"I don't know if the ducks are out, but we can check if it's okay with Malfoy."
"That's fine."
Draco was uncharacteristically silent the whole walk to the park. Chewing on his lip, Harry thought that naturally there was only one course of action. He stole a bite of Draco's ice cream with his spoon.
"Potter! I always knew you had no manners! Were you raised in a servant's quarters? You contaminated my ice cream!"
"I'm perfectly healthy," Harry responded, hand on his chest in mock hurt.
"What- no you left a trail of chocolate in my ice cream!"
"Oh I can fix that-"
Draco slapped Harry's hand before he could take more ice cream.
"Uncultured git," he muttered, scooping out the offended bit and letting it drop into Harry's cup.
"Thanks," he responded with a cheeky grin.
"You're insufferable."
"I love your brutal honesty."
"Ducky!"
Draco couldn't stop looking at the monstrosity of ice cream that was in Harry's cup. Harry had noticed. Obviously he had, he knew Draco Malfoy's gaze better than anyone. He purposely put his ice cream down on the bench to lift Teddy up to see the ducks better. Not knowing he fell into a trap, Draco hummed happily upon trying the offending creation.
As they were walking back to Harry's house, he leaned in to Draco and whispered, "you have some chocolate, right here," and swiped it off the corner of his mouth.
"I don't know what you're talking about."
Harry just grinned at him, for the upteenth time that day, and Draco's heart melted a little bit. He has been watching that smile on Harry's face for years. But to have it turned onto him? That was special.
Harry was feeling the same way when Draco beamed up at him upon being handed leftovers to take home.
"Thank you Potter, goodnight."
"Goodnight Malfoy. Goodnight Teddy," he replied, pulling Teddy into a tight hug.
"You need to hug Draco goodbye too!"
"That won't be necessary- oh. Erm. Goodbye Potter," Draco stumbled over his words, wrapping one arm around Harry and awkwardly patting his shoulder.
"Sleep well, both of you."
Harry watched them disapparate, and leaned against his door, eyes closed, as he replayed the night in his head.
"Draco Malfoy," he whispered quietly to himself, shaking his head as he made his way upstairs to bed.
