Chapter 2

As soon as Harry came home from work that night, he immediately fell asleep without even eating dinner. The day had been long, his company had been obnoxious, and he was unable to accomplish anything he wanted to do. That's how he woke up at 11pm and scrambled to the store, bed head in full effect.

Imagine his surprise when he quite literally bumped into Draco Malfoy at the same store. Rubbing his eyes, Harry squinted at him.

"Potter," Draco greeted, but it came out more like a question.

"Hello Malfoy. Fancy seeing you here."

"I could say the same about you. Are you okay? You look- erm..."

"I just woke up from a nap. I dunno if I can even call it a nap, I was out as soon as I got home at 6."

"You didn't eat dinner?"

"I haven't eaten since- since... uh oh. I did it again."

Harry turned red in embarrassment, his hand rubbing the back of his neck.

"I promise I'm not usually like this. I never forget when Teddy is around but..."

"I understand," Draco replied simply, because he did.

He was as guilty as anyone of being too absorbed in his own projects to eat.

"Shopping for anything good then?"

"Dinner for tomorrow. You?"

"I needed some dried herbs and fresh fruits."

"I never thought I'd be envious of your job," Harry replied with a sigh, turning to walk down the aisle.

Draco followed him before his feet registered what they were doing.

"Everything okay?"

"They misplaced a file and that's why they called me in. Do you want to guess where it was?"

"By the tone of your voice I'm going to guess exactly where it was supposed to be?"

"Precisely! Honestly, the ministry will just hire anyone nowadays, it's pathetic."

"Yes, well they hired you didn't they?," Draco drawled. "Shit, I didn't mean it, that's an automatic response!"

Harry laughed, and Draco noticed a dimple popping out in his cheek.

"Merlin, being with you is so incredibly refreshing, I've almost forgotten."

"We're in the same places a lot, whatever do you mean?"

Draco noticed that Harry was inspecting the cartons of raspberries, and he wondered if they were for him.

"Yes, but I can take a hint, and you clearly didn't, don't? want to be in the same place as me."

"Potter, it wasn't like that," Draco said with a sigh. "Tell you what. Finish your shopping and I'll meet you at the front. We can stop at a cafe so you can get some dinner."

"You don't-"

"Just let me be nice will you? Besides, we need to talk just us before Teddy gets added into the mix."

"Okay," Harry agreed with a shrug. "Any preferences for dinner? Allergies I should know of? I know you don't like kiwi-"

"Just how do you know that?"

"Keep your friends close and your enemies closer yeah?," Harry teased with a wink.

"If you're going to tell me that you're the reason why kiwis were mysteriously appearing on my plate in fourth year I may just have to kill you."

"You were right, I stink."

"You tosser!"

"It wasn't climbing a tree, but I did gain your attention."

"Did you? I had suspected but... how very Slytherin of you."

"I'm more Slytherin than you think."

"Yes, I do recall you stating that someone better be dying in regards to how many times you were summoned."

Harry winced.

"Sorry, I'm not usually so... like that."

"I've said and done worse. I have a few more things to pick up, so I'll meet you at the front."

They continued their shopping, Harry deciding on a chicken and pasta dish for tomorrow.

"I know you said the cafe, but did you want to get takeout and come to mine? I can show you around, and we can talk, freely."

"This night is already strange, why not?"

"Brilliant!"

It was nice for Draco to see a smile on Harry's face for once. And to be the cause of it? His 11 year old self was screaming. His current self was also feeling very giddy, and he promptly squashed those feelings down.

And that's how Draco Malfoy found himself in his ex-rival's home just before midnight. Harry was busy getting plates and cutlery, so Draco began to investigate the living room. He stopped at the one wall, eyes roaming over all of the framed photos.

He was surprised to find himself in quite a few. That's how Harry found him, mouth parted, tracing the frame of one of their quidditch photos from second year.

"How did you-"

"You were one of the main reasons I pushed myself so hard you know? I enjoyed every match that I played against you, even if you didn't play by the rules."

"We should fly again sometime."

The words were out of Draco's mouth before he could take them back. Flying with Potter would surely bring back some bad memories. But Harry had become so excited at the prospect.

"Are you kidding? I would love to! I have a snitch lying around here somewhere, I'll have to find it."

"Flying aside, you said we should talk?"

"I don't hate you," Harry announced, sitting down on the couch.

"I don't hate you either," Draco replied in confusion.

"Good. I'm glad we've established that, because really, I was quite unsure."

"I didn't realize I was coming across that way until Aunt Andy mentioned it. I thought you were being nice because you were you, not because you actually cared to know how I was doing."

"Why would I lie about that?"

"Formalities, I don't know. You have no reason to care."

"Malfoy, if you read into any of our past encounters you'll see that there was always some level of care there. There's nothing that I hold against you anymore, I can assure you of that."

"I honestly might need the reassurance. I can't believe you're treating me like this."

"Have I shown any animosity towards you after your trial?"

"No."

"I was trying to be your friend, you know. I didn't want to come off too strong, I didn't want you thinking that I was doing it with some ulterior motive. But apparently you thought that anyway."

"What do you mean?"

"I've always admired how strong willed you were. If I offered my friendship, you'd think I was trying to help you better your name or your image. Or you'd think that I was doing it to keep tabs on you. Or that I have a savior complex and see you as someone who needs saving."

"You already did that last one. But you're right. I never would have accepted your help if it was offered like that."

"I know, because I know you. I played out those potential conversations between us hundreds of times, and they all ended the same way."

"Do you? Still see me as someone who needs saving, I mean?"

"No, I don't. Malfoy you're more than capable of saving yourself, and that's become extremely apparent.

I still dream about it some nights, you know? My point is, the offer of friendship still stands. I've considered you a friend for years now anyway, despite the way you've continuously shot me down. Think on it, I don't need an answer."

"So we're becoming friends for Teddy?," Draco asked, just to clarify.

"No. We're becoming friends to move on and heal old wounds. To correct wrongs made in the past. And, I'd really like to be your friend."

"Where was this energy when we were 11?," Draco muttered, pinching the bridge of his nose.

"I don't think it was our time then," Harry said simply, "but it could be now."

"I'm still going to make fun of you," Draco warned.

"You better."

"I'll keep calling you out for being a stupid Gryffindor."

"I expect nothing less."

"I'll-"

"Malfoy I get it, nothing is changing besides the title of our relationship," Harry cut in with a laugh.

"Fine. I accept."

Harry offered Draco his hand.

"Really?," Draco asked with a scoff, accepting Harry's hand. "You could use some moisturizer you know. I'll bring some tomorrow."

"I'm glad this didn't change anything," Harry replied with a grin.

Draco had a strong suspicion that once again, Potter would be proved wrong.
