8. Memories

"Okay, I said yes to going for food. Not to that place. It's really risky," I argued, waving my hands about as we crossed the busy New York City streets. "Come on, it'll be like old times," Jim countered, chuckling slightly. "Are you-" I rubbed my hands over my eyes. "Are you actually serious? Of course their going to see us!"

"If I remember correctly, which I do. We used to work Sunday lunches, they couldn't, so they've probably hired someone new. That won't recognize us," Jim explained, glancing my way. "Maybe but CAR!" I yanked him out of the street just as I was in mid sentence. "Fine, if anything goes wrong, you owe me ten bucks," I grunted, dragging his shirt sleeve.

We walked in silence for five minutes, until we came upon it. The orange-beige building was very out of place among the glistening sky scrapers. It's barrels roof tiles were dusted, and some hanged over the edge, warningly about to fall. The glass door held a flashing "OPEN" sign, the P light out. Tables hung around the front, surrounded by the occasional bushel. People sat around chit chatting. As jim opened the door, the familiar jingle lightened my ears.

"He still hasn't fixed the sign," Jim whispered, and I chuckled. "Hi, welcome to house of Hispanic cuisine, how may I help you?" A young ginger woman asked. "Told you they'd get someone new," Jim whispered before clearing his throat. "Table for two, outside please,"

She nodded and grabbed a couple menus, leading outside. "Our specials are picadillo with fried plantains, churrasco steak, with our homemade chimichurri, and pollo asado," she explained, dazzling us with her perfect white teeth. "I'll look over, thank you," I smiled, and she sashayed away. "You know what we have to get," Jim commented, raising an eyebrow. I peered up at him from my glossy menu. The busy sounds around as were distracting, but familiar.

"I will gain 10 pounds," I muttered, a small smile creeping up on my face. He slightly pouted. "Come one! Please?"

The sun shone off his face, as I looked across from him. "Fine," I sighed, putting my menu down in defeat. "It feels just like old times," he grinned, and I was trying to remember when the last he felt so happy was. I felt a presence return to my side. "I'll have the-"

No. That was definitely not the waitress. I looked at jim with a fleeting look in my eyes. We shot from our seats, only to be pushed down by two guys. A second girl walked to my left. "You owe me ten bucks," I growled at Jim. The girl on my left chuckles. "You guys haven't changed," she laughed.

Let's just get this straight. I know the four people standing around me. They're my friends from when i was in New York. Yup. Antisocial me had my own group.

The girl on my left, is Aida. Her mom is white, but her dad is African American, so she's has a light brown skin tone. Her hair is brown with natural highlights, and is tightknot curls in a big poof around her head. She is currently wearing a red semi-crop top, with black pants, and converse. She has a hand on her hip, jutting out a leg. Her perfect hourglass body made her look like a model. She had big, round, hazel eyes. She's about 5"4. And her greatest talent: sweet talking. That girl could get any guy (well anyone) to pretty much get what she wants. Lots of guys are interested in her, but she's had 1 boyfriend in the time I've known her, and was told she's had about 3 in her middle school years.

Next, Lea. The girl on my right. She was fair skin, long blonde hair, cascading down in beach waves. Her hair was dirty brown as it reached the bottom of its tips, around her butt. Her green eyes were framed by long, black eyelashes. She always had a small smile playing on her lips. But before you label her a "dumb blonde" she and Jim were the geniuses in our group. She'd rather spend time hacking into a free coupon website then go shopping. Her height is around 5"3 and a half. She is wearing black pants, and a big forest green pull- over jacket. Knowing her, she probably had a band t-shirt underneath.

Across from me, and behind Jim, was Ben. He had shortish, fluffy black hair. He wasn't super tan, and not super pale. Somewhere in the middle. His blue eyes were electric, and always seems to catch someone off guard. He's only an inch shorter than Jim, so around 5"8. We were always kinda able to relate, he was an orphan too. He got adopted wen he was 3. A nice family, here in New York. They always told him the truth, no matter what. They were definitely an open family. So he always knew he was adopted, but he's was ok with that. He was abandoned as a kid, so when his parents adopted him, and when he was old enough to understand, they told him where he came from. When he found out he was a abandoned and then adopted, they told him this: yes, we may not be your birth parents, but any person abandoning their kid in a box off the side of a street aren't your real parents at all. He always dressed like a guy. Jeans and t-shirt, what to expect.

Automatically, I knew who was behind me. Jay. He's Hispanic, his grandparents immigrated here, and both his parents were born in America. He has dark brown hair, that kinda swoops upwards, and a cocky smile. His warm brown eyes make every girl melt (except Aida, Lea and I) and let's just say he could be a player if he wanted to. He had tan skin, and is about 5"9 and a half probably 5'10. He's hooked up with a few girls, and in fact that's how we met. He was trying to hit on me, and then I slapped him across the face. Friends at first slap. He was also wearing guy clothes. Jeans and a shirt. (Way to spice it up)

The reason they found us here? 3 simple things.

1. Jim was stupid enough to convince me.
2. We used to hang out here all the time.
3. jays family owns that damn restaurant.

And one big reason in all of our relationships with them. They don't know that Jim and I have powers.

"See I told you it was fate we'd meet again. It's meant to be," jay jokingly murmured to me. I rolled my eyes, "nows not the time," I growled. He walked over next to Aida so I could see him. My eyes hurt and began to water as I looked everyone down. I missed them so much. No, I can't...

Ugh. Emotions.

"Look. It was really nice, this reunion. But we gotta go," Jim said smoothly, reaching upwards. I could see Leas eyes lower. "So that's why you left. Why you never called. You just don't like us anymore..." She whispered, and I almost started to cry. "No! We had to leave because of other reasons," i murmured, shooting Jim a glance.

Jay gasped, "you got pregnant!"

"What?" I asked, a bit dazed by his random question. "It was Jim wasn't it!" He shouted, pointing an accusing finger. "No... You know, I've forgotten how stupid you could be," Jim said, running a hand over his eyes. "Yeah, you've probably forgotten. Since we haven't heard from you in 6 months," Aida snapped, and I winced. "Sorry I-"

"Uh-uh honey, don't sorry me. I turn on my tv today to see you on the news. Not only on the news, but flying in iron mans arms! And where to? The hospital! I would've had to go too, because you gave me a damn heart attack!" Aida scream whispered, if one can even do that. An outdoor tv sounded a breaking news tune all of a sudden. I just removed my glance for a single second, and that's all it took to keep them glued. Sadly, everyone else's gazes followed.

"They're everywhere. Supers are popping up all in New York. First the avengers, and aliens, now creatures going to hospitals for treatment," the news woman said, a distraught look on her face. "weren't you at that hospital?" Ben asked, but I could barely hear him. "We will now show you this alarming video taken at the hospital. Watch if you want, it may be disturbing,"

The woman disappeared , and was instead replaced by a video looking down a hospital hallway. Screams broke out and the camera spun to a room. Something was strapped to a bed, and it was changing, turning into a vicious tiger. And it was me. Jim in the video rushed above me, and was talking, when I slashed his face. Aida leaped over to Jim and rubbed a hand over the bandage on his face, before glancing my way. All of a sudden, a man appeared and tranquilizer the tiger. Jim began to shout at him, and I was human again. My face protrayed very clearly. The man began to shout and then the video ended. "Here is a interview with the man that saved many lives," the woman said, returning with a man by her side.

The man.

"What do you have to say about this latest danger, mr. fleetlock?" The woman asked with concern. "Well, basically. That girl isn't human, she's an animal. A very vicious animal. A Monster," he spat out the last word, "and monsters either need to be caged, or killed,"

I pushed the chair back, leaping from my seat, desperate to get away. Jay grabbed my waist, and hugged me to his chest. "Why didn't you tell us?" He whispered. "I-" I began, but a large suit landed next to me.

Tony.

"Listen kids. Sorry to break up what going on but-" he turned to me "we have to go. Now,"

Jim walked forward towards me. "I'm tired of hiding who I am," he spoke proudly, because people were beginning to crowd. The were pointing at iron man, cheerful looks on their faces. But it was quickly changed to me, with expressions of horror. "Just follow me," stark, said and began to fly.

Jim nodded, and outstretched his arms, wrapping it around poles and sky scrapers, swinging like a monkey, soaring like a bird. His silhouette began to rise and wing forward, and I took the cue. "Suit up," I muttered, before changing into an eagle, and flapping my wings to my pounding heartbeat.
