13. A break

"Okay so go back out the window, and knock on the door. I'll come down, act all surprised, meet my parents, and then you can crash," jay explained, fully dressed.

"What? Climb back out the window? Look at the scrapes on my arms from getting in here!" I exclaimed, holding my arm up. He gingerly touched my cuts, "why didn't you just, do your bird thing, and fly through the window," he explained, waving his hands about when he said 'bird thing'.

"If I turned into a bird I wouldn't have been able to tell if the window was open or not, would've taken the chance and crashed," I explained sheepishly.

He put a confused grin, "what? What do you mean?"

I rolled my eyes, "when I turn into animals, a part of me gets the animals instincts," I pause, and talk quietly, "I've crashed into windows before,"

He chuckled, "I'm, sorry. Crashed into windows?"

I nodded, blushing. Now he full out laughed, "was it the thing where your like 'ca caw!' And then 'splat' blehhhh,"

He reenacted a bird crashing and crumpled to the ground, making me slightly chuckle. "Don't laugh! I've even gotten a concussion!" I said, holding in laughs.

Jay, meanwhile, was rolling on the floor in hysterics.

"We have to talk about that later,"

"The concussion?" I asked confused, still smiling. He didn't answer. "Jay?"

"Your powers,"

Okay, smile gone. "See you at the front door," I murmured, opened the window, and flew out.

I flew about a block away, so I could think about what I would say when I got there. Hi remember me? I was your sons friend but then I disappeared and I'm in not sure what they told you exactly about me, and not to mention I'm that creature on the news. Mind if I sleepover? I'm currently unloved by society.

I sighed out loud. It was good enough.

I pulled up to their restaurant, gazing up at there apartment upstairs. Oh yeah, they live on top of house of Hispanic cuisine.

I wrung the doorbell connected to a speaker, and was met with static.

"Hello?" A woman's voice came through, American, but you could tell it was slightly Hispanic. "...hey Ms. Rodriguez..." I murmured.

A pause.

A long one.

"Emily?"

I gulped, "hi,"

Another pause.

"I'll be right down,"

Please don't hate me please don't hate me please don't hate me

I saw the lights in the restaurant turn on. A slim, tall figure strided towards the doors, it's glass surface lighting with glare.

She meets me by the door, but doesn't open it.

"I swear to god I'm not evil," I plead, and her dark brown eyes soften. "Of course you aren't, mamita," she says, unlocking the door. She pulls me into a big hug, her shampoo scent wafting off her waist length jet black hair. "It's just a misunderstanding," I murmured. And she pulled away, "I believe you,"

I chuckle out of happiness, "thanks,"

She glances behind me and locks the door, "where's jim?" I suck in a breath. "Not here,"

She nods, "I realize now, that there are a lot of things in your past that you don't want to say. But if you need anything, we are here,"

I scratch my neck, "about that... Can I please sleep here. I'm kinda like, hunted," I said sheepishly. "Ofcourse, niña," she assured.

"Mama! What's going on?"

Jay tumbled down the steps, and pretended to act surprised. "Emily! Oh my god,"

"Jay, she's going to be staying over. I know things are a bit confusing right now, but why don't you talk it out," ms. Rodriguez suggested. "And why don't you call the rest of the gang over!"

I tried to contain the chuckle. "The gang?" I smirked. Jay paled, "I told you mom, we're not a gang. We're just us," he frantically murmured.

We began to trudge upstairs. "Okay well, call the rest of 'just us'. This is a group effort," she said, and we nodded and climbed up to his room.

Jay sat on his bed, and pulled out his phone. "Wait," I called suddenly, making him look up with a sly smile. "I knew it. Before they come, you want some time alone. With me," he reached forward and pulled me into the bed with him.

I laughed, "ew no. You're so narcissistic. Why would I want you,"

"Excuse you,"

"You need to know where jim is," I murmured. I laid back, letting his plush bed absorb me. He did the same, and grasped my hand. "What happened to jim,"

I let a minute pass, making sure I chose my words carefully.

"He wasn't jim anymore,"

Jay turned to me. "What does that mean? Does it have anything to do with his powers? That stretchy stuff?"

"What do you know about jim. What do you think you know about him?" I asked, getting my other hand and fiddling with his fingers.

"He's adventurous, but when it comes to you, protective. He's a genius, a whizz at escape plans. Has the whole, brown hair, brown eyes look. Likes pizza without a lot of tomato sauce. Hates cauliflower. Isn't the kind of kid to turn down a dare, but he doesn't always take them either. Him and Lea tried to create a blog, wait the did actually. Tends to fight with Aida sometimes. Is like a big brother to ben. He's crazy about you," he smiled at the last part, and I blushed.

"He's my bestfriend," he finished, "and now, I barely know him,"

I shook my head, "you're half right and half wrong,"

"Yeah?"

"Yeah,"

He leaned closer, his face hovering centimeters above mine. Oh my god, is going to kiss me? My first kiss is going to be Jay? After all this time, just like he said?

"He's my bestfriend,"

"What?"

I had barely heard him mutter those few words. They were soft, like whispers in the wind. Going in one ear and out the other.

He pulled back. "It wouldn't be right, he's my bestfriend," he mumbled, not looking me in the eye.

"I don't understand," I said to him, furrowing my brow. We both knew what was going to happen.

Wait.

Anger filled my body as I crumpled my fist. "I see how it is. Now that I'm a monster, I'm not good enough," I said under my breath, getting up.

"No! Emily! That's not why I didn't kiss you," he said. So he knew it was a kiss. "I mean- that was my intention... We're on the same page here, right?" He struggled to finish. "Yeah..." I answered.

"I meant that I'm bound to the bro code. I can't kiss my bestfriends girl," he said, standing beside me. "I'm not his girl," now I wouldn't look him in the eye.

"Lily, he's crazy about you, and you can't see?" He said astonished. "Something happened Jay, something I ca-"

"We're here!"

Three teenagers burst through the door.

Aida, Lea, and Ben. I glared at Jay. "You texted them. After I said to wait?" I furiously muttered to him. He just shrugged. Aida put her hands on her hips, "Alright honey, you and jay alone in a room? What happened?"

Oh boy.

A/N
