Chapter 29
Alyssa's PoV
As confused as I was with Luke's revelation, I was glad he finally had the courage to tell me. As we entered Calum's equally large house, it had a completely different feel to Luke's house. Calum's had posters and memorabilia dotted around, each room having something that showed his fame and how well his band mates had done. Photos of him with other famous people littered the walls in plain black frames. I stopped to take in a few of them as we passed some in the hallway, Kira and Cody running off to a room which I'd assumed was Kira's whenever she stayed here. Calum stopped and noticed me looking, sidling up beside me with an embarrassed smile.
"I don't often have guests..." he said, trying to hide the nervous feeling as my eyes scanned every photo.
"Nonsense. I love memories and photos, they make a house a home." Calum noticeably relaxed and offered me a smile.
"These are some of my closest friends; Roy, Sam, Jordan and Mitchy. That's my sister Mali-Koa ." He began to point out people to me, being able to put a name to a face.
"What was this one for? Looks like you were having fun." I pointed out a photo of him with the band, all of them mid-laugh as the photo was taken. They were all dressed smartly, but held a drink in their hands.
"Heh." Calum automatically grinned, making my heart warm. "That was when we went out to celebrate the release of our last album. We hired out the club." My eyes widened at the fact they hired out the whole place and just how busy it looked in the background.
"Wow." Was all I could muster, but purely out of shock. The sound of the luggage being dragged in caught both mine and Calum's attention. Luke looked highly unimpressed as he wheeled two large suitcases towards Calum and offered him a short shake of the head.
"There's more." Luke said shortly, Calum nodding quickly as he headed out to grab the last few bags. With Calum out of the room, Luke instantly brightened and headed over to me, looking over the photos. "Ah, love this one. Last album release. It was a wild night." He chuckled.
"So I've heard. I love photos, the memories they bring up are always fascinating even if it doesn't seem like it." I said, my face lighting up further.
"It's true. I haven't really taken any since-" Luke cut himself off. I quickly pulled my phone out and opened the camera.
"Think fast!" I held it out and snapped a couple of goofy selfies of the two of us, his face beaming as we did so. The door opened again and Calum walked in, dropping the bags instantly to join.
"I'm in! This one will have to get framed." Calum smiled as we quickly snapped a few more, my phone filling with someone other than Cody for the first time in years. I hid it back in my pocket.
"You'll have to send those to me." Calum said quickly, getting a side glance from Luke.
"Sure thing!" I smiled. "But first, I should probably unpack? If we're here for a while I want Cody to be settled, if that's okay?" I grabbed hold of Cody's case.
"Of course! Let me-" Calum began but Luke interrupted.
"I'll show you. Cody can have the room next to Kira." Luke ushered me past a frustrated looking Calum and down the hallway to some downstairs bedrooms.
"Where would our bedrooms be?" I quizzed, looking around the large house.
"Just upstairs on the right. You can have the one closest to the stairs if it makes you feel better?" Luke asked, noticing my angst.
"Yes please. He's not good with settling into new places. He may be in a few times so the less I disturb others the better." I would normally feel embarrassed discussing my child's issues with anyone, yet with Luke it felt safe. Cody hadn't been a good sleeper since Harry left, always fearful that one day I would leave him too. He would wake up sometimes and come looking for me, worrying if he couldn't see a part of me above the quilt. It took a long time for him to become settled in that house and now we have moved again.
"Uncle Cal, can we have some juice?" Kira was shouting down the hallway to Calum, who shouted a quick yep as he headed to the kitchen. Luke opened the door to Cody's new room and presented it as if he were an estate agent. My jaw dropped at the sheer size of it. The room was probably bigger than my living room back home, a large comfy double bed neatly presented with a grey colour scheme right in the middle, with a wardrobe and a small chest of toys opposite it.
"Kira seems to have a small box of toys in every room." Luke shrugged. "She'd often change her mind with which room she wanted to sleep in and Calum was getting annoyed lugging the toy box around." I wheeled the case in and opened it, pulling out a few of his favourite things and placing them in similar places to where they were in his bedroom; the lion blanket on the pillow, the boomerang on the windowsill, his favourite excavator on the chest of drawers and a football in the corner of the room. I unpacked Cody's clothes, feeling odd as I folded them into drawers that weren't his and hung them in a wardrobe that wasn't ours. This was definitely going to take some getting used to. "I'll leave you to it. I'll take our cases upstairs."
"Thanks so much Luke. You've made this a lot easier than I thought it would be. Luckily, I don't even think Cody cares right now." I offered a smile.
"That's how I'd like to keep it - those two oblivious to the horrid woman we have to deal with. Hopefully we'll be rid of her soon enough." But his words didn't sound convincing, if anything it sounded like he was trying to trick not only me but himself. Was this ever going to get easier or was Ivy going to make it a hell of a lot harder first?
